Replacing Xbox 360 Controller Rechargeable Batteries

  • I had a rechargeable battery for my xbox controller that wouldn't hold a charge for more than about 15 minutes. Instead of throwing it away and buying another, in this video I attempted to replace the battery with Energizers purchased from Walgreen's. The controller seems to be working fine. The 4 pack of rechargeable batteries was only $7.99 instead of a new Microsoft battery pack for $9.99.

Great DIY video. A couple of suggestions. A razor blade will work. BUT always cut AWAY from yourself. As for soldering, consider wire glue...no heat required and 100 times easier. Also electronics shops carry generic rechargables, 2450mAh go for about $1-3/each. You don't pay for the name and they'll still outlast the overpriced MS junk.
For those asking why? Why not? MS is in it for the money, their packs are not the greatest and made to crap out (cheap cells).

The silver-bearing solder from Radio Shack works better, sticks better, and solders much faster than standard tin/lead solder without silver. I replaced 2 of these battery packs using brand new Energizer AA Rechargeable 2300Mah batteries following the instructions in this video using silver-bearing solder and they work great. Thanks for the video!!

@nicanor76 I do use rechargable batteries for my controller, however, you still have to take them out and recharge them with their own recharge station. Because recharging them using the charge cable on the controller can damage the controller. Thus, it cuts into the play time and have to wait until they fully recharge, unless you have a rotation going on: always have at least two batteries charging while the other two rechargable batteries are in the controller.

I know this is a few years old, but if you want your solder to flow and connect properly, you should be using flux

Thank you! To you for the video and the other comments below for the additional advice.
I just replaced my controllers with custom shells and I've been searching for how to mod my old white battery packs with the new shells.
This was just what I was looking for!

if your having issues soldering to the battery ends , it Helps if you use some sand paper on the ends of the battery to give the solder something to grab on to.

And a tiny tiny TINY driplet of flux in the center. (Too much will make it leak where you don't want solder to stick- but will make the solder actually cling to the metal area soaked in that flux. You just want it where you're soldering to.)
I'm curious how well the charge kit handles the battery swap too though 🤔 ... at least these batteries (if NiCad) are considerably safer than lithium and lithium polymer batteries :) but expensive too though.

also note that the $7.99 pack of batteries included 4 batteries, so you could do 2 battery packs, bringing the cost down to about $4 each, less than half price (assuming you have a soldering iron and solder laying around) for batteries that will last longer than the original packs. You can also order the rechargeable batteries online for even less. That said, there's no harm in buying an original replacement, this is just an alternative.

No need to solder, I just stuck the contacts to the batteries with electrical tape. Its working just fine.

it's a good thought in trying to repair instead of dispose, I commend you on that. But why not just put the rechargeable battery into the standard battery shell, won't have to crack open the rechargeable shell??

@psbauman 2 dollars in savings? You can get the batteries for under 2 dollars shipping included on ebay. No offense but I'd run those figures again.

Replace the battery with Sanyo Eeneloop one of the best batteries out there. Don't fall for fake battery mah most are 350mah but claim 3000 if you want good long lasting batteries you cant spend $2 its about $10 for 4.

What is the copper wire for in between the batteries? Also, it looks like my batteries were spot welded on to the leads. Then again, I got the pack used from a Chinese website and the batteries stopped holding a charge after a few days. What should I have expected for $3?
