  • In this week’s UpFront we talk to Liberia’s former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf about her 12 years in power, and challenge her on accusations of nepotism and corruption.
And in the arena, we debate the controversial decision to rerun Istanbul's mayoral election with senior AKP member Harun Armagan and Cato Institute fellow Mustafa Akyol.

Just for the record, Liberia's culture doesn't encourage corruption nor selective justice as Ma Ellen claimed. The culture frowns on such things.

God, please have Mercy on Liberia, And give us leaders that have the Country at heart...stealing money for their own selfish gain..leaving majority of the people in Poverty, no Electric City, no Pipe boil Water, Poor road conditions, Poor Educational System in most of the rural areas, corruption at the Ministry of Finance, Central Bank of Liberia, etc.. and u are saying this is a Culture " this is disgusting.. As a Liberian, I have been fortunate to traveled to few Countries in west, East, Africa etc, and have seen massive development and progress and it makes my heart Sick and Sad to see Liberia in such devastating State... 90% of these so called Politicians have one Goal and Agenda " Deceive the people, get Elected and Enrich themselves " God is watching " And until Liberians remove their eyes from on those so called politicians and focus on God to give them leaders after his heart, they are going to be in this round about for a long..And to all my fellow Liberians watching this show, don't just sit there n fold your hands as a spectator, u can cause a positive change, n not with Guns or blood shear, but with that God given Talent n gift inside of you..Seek knowledge n command good success for Liberia.. God bless u all n God bless Liberia.

Mehdi, you have no idea how eternally grateful Liberians will forever be for this well-prepared and sharp interview. Ellen was not expecting any meaning challenge and persistence at all. She scramble in every which way, attacking you, becoming unnecessarily emotional, using political speech devoid of any answer to the questions, attempting to simply move on to other questions etc etc... This woman controlled the Media, Judges and many Lawmakers in that fragile nation...No one ever pressed her on anything and external media simply praised her for empty things like being the first female leader...Corrupt and crooked to the core...and absolutely skilled in manipulating the global community, using her Harvard education and prestige, while running circles around the desperate Liberian people. Thank you soooo much, sir.

As I said when I in Liberia, even before the 2005 Elections n 2011, if I were the only Liberian at that time to elect a Leader, I couldn’t have even given her a street sweeping job!
In a normal World, people judge you upon what you have done. Since this lady got to know herself, there’s no up rising or setbacks in Liberian history that she is not part of. If you listen or read the TRC Reports in Liberia, you will understand.
Liberia, the once Star ⭐️ of Africa, to be where it is today, just think again and ask yourself!
Oh yeah! I was 10 years old, when I heard a mother of 4, over BBC giving commands about destroying lives and properties.
The pains, suffering, trauma of losing parents, family members and friends we have to go through, still live with some of us even in our adulthood. This lady! Nothing about her surprises me either.
In Africa, our mothers, are the ones who always keeping it claimed, together even when some foolish father messes up!
But for this lady, it was the opposite. A woman with influence, to side with evil men to destroyed a whole nation and its people, what really do you expect of her?
“Peace Price “! Ahh yah kah! That day, even the dead in graves were in tears!
I hope and pray the lives of many fatherless, motherless, or parentheses children will get better someday. Not forgetting single mothers and pas, who lost loved ones and all they have ever worked for, and their lives are still unpredictable because of another 12 years of not having any explanations to explain 🙅🏾‍♂️.
    Thanks for this interview Sir.
And thanks Iron Lady for accepting the interviewer’s invitation.
Enjoy your life and money ma; enjoy your grand kids, show them love and affection, but remember many of us who fought it through the difficulties you and your friends created for us, our children have no one to call their Grandparents today, neither do we have anyone to run to for an advice when life’s challenges hit us 😭😭😭. Good day ma Ellen.

The real issue of Liberia is not corruption. It's western nations not making fair trade with Liberia. They are taking natural resources such as rubber, etc, and not building fair share of infrastructure wish is what western nations are good at. The point is, if you take a country natural resources wish is it's best assets, you should provide your best assets in return . That is a fair trade. Western nations best assets are it's infrastructure airport, shipping dock , roads, hospital, schools, housing, job creation. They can build some of these infrastructure but more importantly, teach the Liberian citizens so they can do for themselves. That is a fair trade. WESTERN NATIONS, TAKE ALL THE NATURAL RESOURCES BUT JUST HELP BUILD INFRASTRUCTURE AND TEACH THE CITIZENS THE KNOW HOW. PEOPLE WANT TO LEARN SO THEY CAN DO FOR SELF. THAT IS THE REAL ISSUE NOT CORRUPTION.

She didn't do a good job defending herself but just from the tenor of the questions I can tell the interviewer doesn't know Liberia well. His investigation basically followed what "the book says" as far as rules and policies. Liberians like to pretend they are a law abiding country but if you dig deeper you'll find it's a mess. He should've done a better job understanding how things work...but then again he probably had only 25 minutes.

This guy'is so disrespectful.she is not a war criminal. Talking about war criminal you should be talking about the killer that Liberia had as president of Liberia and the want before that and now you elected a boo-boo the fool puppets and a sell out. You have Chinese, Indians and Lebanese taking over the country and Liberian citizens are suffering living from hand to mouth and don't know what tomorrow will bring. You call that life? No it's not very heart breaken SAD
