CW Lemoine sent me here - WOW, what a captivating interview with Dick Nelms! Oh, my heart 💛 SEA is my hometown, still here. As a little girl, the big jets flying overhead sparked my curiosity, but my WW2 vet airmen uncles lit the fire in my soul to fly. In 1994 as a teen, I learned to fly from a WW2 vet, Edward G. Schultz out of AUB, CFII # 1138735. If he's still alive, he may be another vet with stories to tell! I could write a book on life lessons Ed taught me through the medium of flight school. I'll never forget these men who fought and those who were lost. When Dick pulled that piece of flak out of his pocket...😯 WOW! He gave some very good advice about learning to control your fear. Ed taught me the same, and it's been most valuable advice. Thank you for this excellent interview! I'm going to have my teen daughter watch it with me - like her mom, she wants to fly (she has flown & she's a natural bird!) She's pondering military service, so I share awesome stories like this with her. We'll never forget you, Dick!

@@johnsader8811 I think my flight instructor, Ed, may be the son of the famous Edward Schultz aviator I found in Google results. I estimate my instructor would have been in his mid to late 60s in 1994 (prob born c. 1925-29), in addition to WW2 vet he was also a retired airline pilot and his adult son was an airline pilot - maybe something to go on. That name is a hard one to search (2 famous results) so I put his old CFII # in hopes this channel might be able to find & interview him! If his father was the famous Ed Schultz, wow! That pic sure looks like my Ed. He lived in King County, WA last I knew, with his wife Inari.

This is absolutely awesome. My Grandfather, Col. Norman I. Radin was a b17 pilot. Flew every mission, up to the point of going home. Then Doolittle stepped in a added more missions, pro rating the guys who had already finished, i.e. my GPA. He went out on his last last mission, and was shot down. Took flak over Germany, and crashed in Switzerland. Was captured by the Swiss army, escaped captivity (a hotel, he was an officer) captured again, and that time made it out, alive. He passed in 2013. Hats off to every single person on this planet that is still alive that fought the Nazis. You are the truest heroes of this world. Thank you all for your service.

@@danielhughes9556 Holy moly, the story of your grandpa sounds nearly identical to that of my uncle, Richard Liedahl! He was a tail gunner in a B24 Liberator & his plane was shot down and they glided into Switzerland - survived. They were taken "prisoner" but treated like kings - fed the best foods, comfy beds. I was in awe as a little girl when he'd recap the war stories. Are you sure grandpa wasn't in a B24?! How crazy would that be if it was the same crew! I found my uncle's page on American Air Museum: He was on board "Little Fat Stuff II" (42-7591) on July 12th 1944 on a mission to Munich when it was damaged by flak and forced to land in St. Gallen-Altenrhein Airport in Switzerland. National treasures - every one of them 🇺🇸💛

@@UnderTheGreydar no, he was definitely a b17 pilot. My aunt, my gpas daughter, married my uncle, who's father was a b24 pilot. Danny haiken. I don't know the rank. If you have time, this link is an interview my grandfather gave. His account of the war. www.loc.gov/item/afc2001001.26724/

Fantastic interview. His story made me listen even more when he mentioned Stowmarket, this is a town in mid-Suffolk, East Anglia, UK. I lived in the town for over 10 years after leaving the Royal Air Force. I discovered Dick had flown from the American air base at Rattlesden which is only about 5 miles south west of Stowmarket, and somewhere I actually visited a number of times. I have even flown over the old airfield in a hot air balloon, which was a hobby of mine back then. Thanks.
