    I didn't realize until I watched this how good Paddy Considine's performance was in 24 hour party people he had the voice mannerism and look down. It really is amazing.

    Man I would have killed to go to the Hacienda - they need to rebuild. And Paddy Considine totally owned the persona of Rob Gretton in 24 Hour Party People!

  • @rovingricey
    @rovingricey 16 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    Agreed! I'd never seen the real Rob Gretton before watching this today and I had to watch it twice to believe just how uncanny Paddy C's portrayal of his was.

    Gretton was the Heart And Soul of both bands... his elegance of refusal defined much of their output and much of our experience... rest in peace you bugger ;)

    I think that people DEEPLY underestimate the impact that producers have on music. I used to think like that too - until I started noticing that all my favourite music was made by a handful of producers. Look at Nile Rodgers for example - totally different genre - but he made a GIANT impact (some would say he even made their sound) for Chic, sister sledge, madonna, blondie, grandmaster flash, later roxy music, and a tons of others...

    Dear me - the acrimony surrounding this band is phenomenal: Hannett went to his grave estranged by everyone, Hooky v New Order don't even speak anymore unless through lawyers, Hooky spent most of his autobiography slagging of pretty everyone including Gretton, Wilson is regarded as a negative force for Factory records by they way he bled the artists dry in order to fund his various failing business projects including the factory nightclub.I think we can all agree that Paul Morley is tiresome and not just the way he speaks out of the corner of his mouth.

    • @silversnail1413
      @silversnail1413 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      At least they all stayed honest. None of that lovey-dovey Hollywood let's pretend to be friends for the cameras crap. Honestly I think Barney, Hooky and Steve are remarkably magnanimous towards Tony Wilson considering how badly he screwed them.

    • @revol148
      @revol148 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@silversnail1413 Agreed - and I've yet to read WHY they allowed Wilson to bled them dry when they should have realised what a chancer he was and signed to a different label by the end of the 1980's if not earlier. It's also interesting to note that when the Happy Mondays imploded in 1992 Factory label went under shortly after as there were no more big selling bands with which to keep afloat the constantly collapsing business empire. Who knows? perhaps a lot of it has to do with people thinking that Wilson was a decent person rather than a useless, money leeching parasite.

    I agree with your 20% :-). It's just that I do enjoy Joy Division's raw sound live too, but yeah, he played an extremely important role in the sound of Joy Division.

    Sumner, Hook and Morris were the music behind Joy Division. Hannett gave them the special sound and atmosphere, but the music is still from Sumner, Hook and Morris.

  • @canuck21
    @canuck21 17 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    And Ian Curtis alone would be what? Pompous as they may be, they were the music behind the vocal and the lyrics. Without Sumner, Hook and Morris, there would be no Joy Division. Don't think that any other musicians would have given the same result. The success of New Order is proof that they do have talent whether you like their style of music or not. Read Ian Curtis' couple of biographies to have a better understanding of the band.

  • @canuck21

    There is no doubt that the special sound whom many attribute to Joy Division is the work of Martin Hannett no question about it. When I listen to Joy Division before Hannett had a hand on their material, they sounded like another band. Still, the music composition came from the lads. It's all the elements put together that made Joy Division special; vocal and lyrics (Curtis), music (Sumner, Hook and Morris) and sound (Hannett).

    Without ripped-off Martin Hannett's production - the JD sound, they'd have been struggling. Without Ian's vocals and lyrics, they'd have been nothing. New Order are simply riding on the back of 2 dead genius's. "Flogging a dead body" X2 true.
    Thank God for all that though - the music is magic and timeless gift to the world forever.

    Paul Morley was seriously full of shit in those days. Given what we all know now about how Factory was (mis)managed, his portrayal of the company as shrewd and businesslike is laughable.
