The 500 was my first JINHAO and my experience with it, alongside with the "Centennial" (and the WORDSWORTH & BLACK "Primori"), by price and in the sense of right start after some months of inactivity, prove it. Congrats by your detailed vid.
How about both? This pen (though I'd like to find an EF nib for it), AND a Starbuck's latte grande with a double-shot of espresso and a shot of cinnamon-flavored syrup! (My usual Starbuck's order, though I haven't had one in months!)
I have enjoyed your reviews. I would have to pick the Jinhao over the latte since I am not a coffee drinker. Just tea for me. Since I am from the south it would have to be sweet tea. If I drink hot tea, there will be no sweetener. Everytime I see a $4 or $5 pen I have to slap my hand to keep from buying it. I am trying to build up my ink now. Seeing that I am just now getting into purchasing fountain pens, my ink supply is at only 2 bottles (not the same color), Montverde Horizon Blue and Canyon Rust. Thanks for your reviews. I enjoy all of them.
James, I own several Graf Von Faber Castelle and a Cartier I was gifted, but I have a strange fascination for finding the best bang for your buck Chinese pens along with great Budget friends from companies like TWSBI and Pilot. I'd grab this pen over the espresso drink, and I like fancy coffee.
I sure understand that. Every new pen can take away an opportunity to enjoy an old pen I'd like to use. Pickier all the time. I have two rotations--a "pens to review" rotation, and those that are long-termers. The latter is pretty full, and reservations are harder to come by. lol
As soon as you said Katz' Pastrami, I knew what I wanted, hahaha! But seriously, I'd buy pens before food most of the time. Greatly, Greatly enjoy your videos. 🌷
I have a couple of these but the blue one is quite hard to come by. I managed to spot one and it's on order now, which is nice coincidental timing. One thing I'm not too sure about with Jinhao is which pens are in the X series and which are not. We know the X450 and X750; I've seen the 250 with and without the X. I've also seen someone quote this one as an X500. All very confusing and ambiguous.
I've noticed that about the 250 as well. This may be because they seem to leave al marketing up to vendors, and they may be as confused as the rest of us.
My Jinhao 500 brown marble will be arriving to my home tomorrow, and I will wait for my Majohn T5 to arrive to have a comparison in writing experience amongst Pelikan M200, Jinhao 500 and Majohn T5. Ironically despite buying an expensive Pelikan M200 my writing experience is lower than my Hongdian 1837 and 1831, the writing experience cannot even match Lamy Safari, pay more does not mean better writing experience at least to me. Besides holding a Pelikan M200 is like holding a toy plastic wand, perhaps I need a heavy pen like the Hongdian 1837 to enjoy writing.
They write quite a bit the same, and the style is very similar at first glance, but differences jump out as you put them beside each other. The sections are completely different, as are the clips and trim pieces. Even the crown & finial, which are the same design, is not of identical proportions. Here are some photos: photos.app.goo.gl/WC1u5pNZX6EkxavP8
This pen vs either of the food options you mentioned: pen, hands down. But then, I don't like either of what you mentioned. Now a Jindao 500 vs a Bahn Mi? vs a Jian Bing? That's a tougher question. I think I would still go with the pen. Though a #6 nib would be a killer great way to go.
Greetings from England. I have the 500 with the dark green marble finish. I think it matches with the black cap better than the blue. My only complaint with the pen is the weight, even when used uncapped. I also have the Jinhao 100 in the same colour. Although it's larger than the 500...it's not as heavy. My complaint with that? it's too large.Given that in many respects the 500 is very much like a smaller version of the 100, if only jinhao would make a scalled down version of the 100, using the same materials as the 100 I think they would have a winner- given that the 100 is a copy of the Parker duofold of the 1920's. After all, Parker did make smaller versions of the Duofold, that I think were called Junior and Lady.
For me, it would be peppermint mocha time (if I wasn’t on a diet 😢). Just because I already have a Jinhao x450, so it won’t really offer a unique writing experience for me. I’d rather get something that writes in a unique way, or is made of a unique material, even if it is a bit more expensive. My favorite Jinhao pen is my 51a in tiger wood. It’s fun to use, and it gets me a nice, thin line, which I like for my fountain pen art. That pen star in one of my most popular videos on my channel as well, so Jinhao definitely makes some winners. Does this pen also have a plastic mechanism for sealing the cap? My x450 does, and it’s the one flaw I can find with the pen. Being a heavier pen (which I like), all it took was a few uncarefull drops to the floor to crack that inner plastic cap and make the pen neigh unusable. I epoxied the inner cap, but it has never capped quite the same. Shame too, since the rest of the pen is so sturdily made.
Nice review. This pen is way too heavy for me and since I'm already having too many pens I'll prefer the Big Mac. I still buy pens but only if they have something special about them (which doesn't mean they have to be expensive). This pen looks nice, seems to write ok and is inexpensive but that's it. There is nothing that makes me curious.
@@JG3Reviews I’m not very successful on EBay auctions, at least on pens. But I think that I got an okay deal on my M120, broad. Would love to have a medium.
Another great place is Epstein's Deli in Hartsdale! Love the Kosher pastrami sandwich on rye, with a kosher pickle and potato knish or tasty fries. James it is 5:30 AM, and your Katz comment has now made me hungry with wonderful memories of those tasty kosher pastrami or corned beef (LOL) I do agree that a #6 nib would really be nice, I only have one 500 (checkered), and it is now 15 yrs old. I have to admit it is not one of my most liked Jinhao pens. I prefer the Jinhao 51A and its #5 med. nib. My grey resin writes almost butterlike. May you and your family have a blessed Thanksgiving! Shalom.
I've found the *Jinhao 500* a decent *Pelikan Souverän M600-esque* , well, really not a clone - it's a "heavily inspired", pen. It also looks sufficiently different with the "standard mid-size Jinhao" clip. I like my "Coffee" patterned one and it's a *way* better M600/M400-like (the size, especially of the Hongdian is more of an in-between) pen than the *Hongdian 960* which is a more obvious Pelikan Souverän fake and also *abysmally* worse, both as a Pelikan fake (it just looks cheap) and as a pen. The Jinhao 500 on the other hand truly is only inspired in it's design not really a fake, the dimensions and design elements are all substantially different upon closer inspection. And unlike the Hongdian 960 it's actually a *good* pen! I personally have it in my growing Jinhao collection of pens I take to work (I'm a bespoke shoemaker, so there always is some minor risk of damage) so as not to risk the more 'spensive fountain pens but still have a solid and comfortable writing implement on hand - Jinhao has been called "the Pelikan of Chinese pens" and I'd support that assertion - yes, it's a inspired and a cheaper Chinese pen, but it's also among the *best* thereof. Thanks for the review! Best regards Raoul G. Kunz
I would buy this pen before I would buy either of the flavored coffees. Even before I would buy a Big Mac. An extra-large, single source, Ethiopian coffee??
God bless you too James, may you be with all the family you desire and surrounded by uncountable loved ones this holiday.
I have two of these. A brown and a black. The pure black version is very stylish. They are good edc pens.

I'll take the latte, thanks. With 50+ pens in hand, any future purchase MUST tick ALL of my specific, seemingly quirky, boxes.

For what it's worth, the Jinhao 51a is a great option at the same price point if you want real resin, with excellent depth.
It is. I have a couple, and they are among my favorites.

How does this pen compare to the Jinhao 8802? They look almost the same, just with different materials.

I don't think it will fit.

Yes, it does have that plastic sleeve like the others. I forgot to mention that.
Yes, that wooden 51a is a favorite of mine, too.

What model Pelikan is that? 400? 600?
The pen, of course!
How do you like the Pelikan, and which one is it? I have the Pelikan M120, and LOVE it! Have a blessed day!
It is a great pen. I bought mine from an estate sale on eBay, and if it was ever used more than once or twice, I'd be shocked.

I watched a bunch of them go way too high. This particular pen seem to fly under the radar.
Do you know anything about the #500 Fude pen model, thank you?
No, I'm sorry to I don't.
Hey any plans on review Jinhao Centennial please?
I haven't ordered it, yet. But it's on the list.

I’d pick a pen over an over-priced coffee anytime. Especially if the coffee is just gonna make me fat and diabetic.
I would buy this pen before I would buy either of the flavored coffees. Even before I would buy a Big Mac. An extra-large, single source, Ethiopian coffee??
I’ll for a large cup of Ethiopian coffee, and, in keeping with the sandwich theme, a pulled pork one from the Pig Pit!
