  • Udayagiri and Khandagiri were once part of a single hill known as Kumarigiri Hills before 1947. However, after India gained its independence, the caves came under the control of the Archaeological Survey of India and were given the names Udayagiri caves, which means ascending hill, and Khandagiri caves, which means shattered hill.
These caves were built in the 1st century B.C. by Kalinga's monarch, Kharavela of Meghavahana Dynasty. For Jains, Digambars, and monks, he has built 752 caverns to use as meditation spaces. There are currently just 100 caves that can be found, and the rest have been damaged by severe weather and lack of maintenance from the pre- independence era. However, only 18 of the 100 caverns can be differentiated accurately and have names allocated to them.
In Khandagiri, there are 15 caves. During the rule of Uddyotakeshari of the Somavamshi dynasty, these caves underwent renovation.
