The One Tool Series Leatherman Desperately Needs To Replace

  • The Leatherman Juice line filled a void that most multi tool manufacturers completely overlook. With it's 3 1/2" frame, it was a perfectly sized multi tool for pocket carry. It is a frame size that they have neglected since they were dropped from the line a couple of years ago. Even if they don't make a V3 of the Juice series, this frame size is worth exploring in my opinion.

The S2 never leaves my pocket but I own just about the entire juice line. They are not perfect but they make for a great tool that you barely notice in your pocket. I wouldn’t claim that it is the best tool for any job but if you just need to tighten a loose screw real quick, or open a bottle, it is a nice option to have in your pocket. The little flat head screw drivers save me from using my knife to pry stuff all the time too. Just that alone makes it worth carrying. Nothing worse that breaking the tip on a nice knife just because you didn’t have something else on you to pry with.

I would love a pocket size Swisstool with all tools (except pliers) accessible from outside. Was using my Juice today, and as much as I love it, I hate pulling out the interior tools.

I thought about how cool a Victorinox multitool like that would be, basically with 2 alox SAKs as the handles, folding around a plier head like the one on the Juice, with Victorinox blade, openers/drivers, reamer, scissors, saw and file...I can dream.

The Juice KF4 is , in my opnion, the ideal Leatherman to carry in your pocket. Its size is compact , its lightweight and it contains all the essential tools. And It does not have a useless toy scissors ! I've never been able to figure out why you need a scissors when a sharp blade can provide the same functionality and more. I've never been able to understand Leatherman's decision to terminate the line. The size of the frame makes it the perfect pocket tool .

I've had 2 first gen XE6. First one I lost then found later. 2nd one got retired when my company banned non locking blades on site, so upgraded to the Surge. I used my Juice every day for something. I damaged the pivot on my first one and the pliers became tight. Also the flat screw drivers were easy to twist if you over torqued and then became extremely difficult to open. When you did get them open with the nail nick they were prone to sticking into your skin between the finger nail and knuckle. The scissors were also a little difficult to use as there is basically a 1:1 lever ratio at the tip. So they were hard to use for precision work even on finger nails. Shame they retired them and didn't fix the main issues such as the difficult to open flat drivers. Wish Victorinox would make a pliers based tool using the 91mm tools... Love the Spirit.

It would be nice should Leatherman bring back this line. I was lucky enough to have purchased two of these models back in their hayday. These are great for a gentleman's edc or when duty calls for business atire. LIghtweight , compact and veristile, and I found the juice models to be the perfect EDC when on vacation when your edc is downsized. I usally pair my juice with a victornox swiss army knife making them good travel companions.

Man... a couple of years ago, I lost my CS4 and could NOT find a new one. Around Black Friday, I saw an online Leatherman ad and clicked on it and saw they had the CS4! Well, I ordered it and a month and a half later I got a Chinese $2 multi-tool that you would find in a bucket next to the cash register at Harbor Freight. I was heartbroken. But then, a couple of months later, I found my CS4 in a side pocket of a duffle bag that I hadn't used in a while. I treasure it now.. To this day, I think I've used my Leatherman more than all my other tools combined. It has everything you need for day-to-day fix-its.

Had an orange first gen Juice S2 and lost it. Bought a storm gray second gen S2 to replace it. Intended to get a blue CS4 but never did before they discontinued the line. If they do bring it back, they need to bring back the first gen knife blade. The second gen blade was shorter and rounded, I think in an attempt to get under the blade limit that TSA temporarily allowed until people freaked out. That blade was just disappointing.

Do you know of any ways, videos, suggestions, etc. for repairing or modifying any the juices? I really MISS my KF4, which like you, I found incredibly versatile... Yeah, especially that diamond file!
I carried my KF4 in my pocket to work every day for 10-12 years, till I had to retire, with no issues. Ironically, when I cleaned it using brake cleaner, a couple of the spring bars simply fell out!! Frustrated, I sent it to LMn asking for a repair. They told me that the Juices are not fixable because of the rivets. WHY couldn't those rivets be removed and replaced with screws?? Any thoughts anyone?

Most underrated implement of all time has to be Victorinox's parcel hook. Of all the times I coulda used that damn thing to save the soft squish pads of my booger pickers trying to handle a taught wire cable or twine, I'll be damned if I'd ever have one in the pocket rotation...
Seriously, the first pair of sturdy, usable plier-tools to implement that is guaranteed to get my money. In fact, ditch the corkscrew dogma mindset, if you're using a damn multitool to pop open your wine bottle, be honest, are you using a glass even? Perhaps so, but, whatever the case, just punch the damn thing into the bottle and spare the frustration.

they should re-invent the juice. I love the simplicity of skeletool, but not keen on the form factor. If they can simplify the skeletool design and pack it more tool like a juice, that'd be great. Ive EDC-ed skeletool, sold it and bought Wave. But yearning for something in beetween those two. Somewhat like juice but with pocket clips.

The KF4 is pretty much the ideal small multi-tool in my mind. It would be nice to have scissors as well, but at that point I guess it's not a problem to just carry a Victorinox Classic to compliment it. Give it a pocket clip and re-release it as is. I'd actually pay quite a bit for that. In a SAK that combination of tools is both impossible to find and it would make it impractically thick.
The one thing I must disagree with is the bit exchanger. Usually I see the value, but for a small, light pocket tool, I prefer having a decent readily accessible Phillips in a more compact size, over the added bulk and complexity of the exchanger.

I think this video is dumb, and your points are invalid. Why would Leatherman release a new version of their most functional and pocketable tool. It makes no sense. You know what would make a lot of sense though? If Leatherman took one of the handles from the Juice, and only kept the knife on it while keeping it a slip joint and doing nothing to the weight, so it weighs more than a fully functional knife that is twice the size, locks, and can be opened with one hand.

Just wish the TSA would allow pocket knives again (which they almost did a couple of years ago), so I could take it when I travel with carryon only. But then given the idiotic stuff happening onboard planes lately I can't fault the flight attendants for not wanting knives in the cabins.

Hi from the UK! Actually the shorter blade on the 2nd Generation had nothing to do with our draconian knife laws! Lol the 1st gen was perfect! We can’t have a blade over 3” from base to tip ( not just cutting edge) and has to be a non locking slip joint.
1st gen blade is 2-5/8” so well inside the rules! From my understanding, what happened was Leatherman had brokered a deal with the F.A.A & C.A.A that if that reduced the size of the blade and gave it a sheeps foot point it would be allowed on US internal flights. The deal was struck, Leatherman redesigned the juice range, changed all the tooling and stamped out the 2nd generation. This was at a huge cost to the company but they figured it would be worth it in the long run. Anyways not long after this had taken place and the 2nd gen hit the marketplace the Airline organizations reneged on the deal and left Leatherman in the shit.
It just wasn’t financially viable to reverse the model changes and it had to go to market to help clear the losses. When all the 2nd gen were virtually sold they discontinued the line. I have the 1st gen xe6 model and it’s fantastic! Everything you need with decent pliers in the size of a Swiss champ! If they decided to relaunch with two small changes like remodelling the can opener to something like that’s on the wave but smaller maybe? And having a sharp edge on the in-line awl as in the Victorinox pioneer range? They would have a market leader...

I like the size and how most of the tools are outside accessible in the Juice line. I feel like a modern version of the juice would be a solid addition to the Leatherman lineup in the sub-$65 range. I feel like the previous Juice line had way too many variations. They should just make two solid versions of the juice and price them appropriately.

Sub $65???!!! I'm in the UK and we can only dream of that even if they did re-release this line. Just the B2 and CS3 (which are plierless versions consisting of just one handle with a couple of tools of dubious utility) cost the equivalent of $40 here if you can find them. There is a hunting shop here which according to their website still has the Juice C2 (no scissors, saw, or file, just pliers knife, drivers and corkscrew/opener) in stock...it's £100 or $120. I can get a Victorinox Spirit for that, or a Wave + so no thanks!

After returning home from a family vacation where my daughters bought a bottle of wine to share and no cork screw to be found, I made a kit for all of the women in my life because after making one, they all wanted one, a Juice CS4 in a small nylon sheath, the bit kit to fit the phillips bit, a Bic lighter wrapped with some Gorilla brand duct tape and a Mag Light Solitare held together with a few hair bands. Most of them have put a little cash in the hair bands with the kit and all of them love telling me how useful they havebeen for them, small enough to fit in a purse with a lot of uses.I carry in my rotation the XE6, compare the size of the scissors, saw and file to the Surge and I think the Juice line becomes a little more valuable. Another great video, keep up the good work.

Great video! I couldn't agree with you more. I have carried a Juice S2 for years, the same Orange scale version you have, and have carried it all around the world using it everyday. Leatherman really needs to listen and bring back this version ASAP, nothing else compares. What makes the Juice S2 so good, is the size and carry-ability, along with the combination of every day useful tools. Instead of those magnet monstrosities, they should seek to make the Juice series even better through further development...

He told me he caries this tool everyday. The finish is worn off and looks very well worn ( has tons of character). It's a shame that these awesome well made tools are no longer available. I believe that these tools would fill a very much needed niche for people that work in the public eye, restaurant workers, office workers etc. I still carry mine when in an environment where it is frowned upon when you have a holster on your belt. Leatherman really needs to bring these back.

I managed to lose my Juice (I don't know how), and I really miss it. Mine was apparently a limited edition That came with a sheath like the one you showed. It came with a short, curved, sharp (and sharply pointed), serrated foil cutter blade which made it a complete sommelier's tool in addition to having all the main things I like on a multi-tool (which does not include scissors). The squared shank on the Phillips was designed to fit the Leatherman bit adapter, so it didn't need the bit exchanger. When I first saw it, I couldn't believe how robust the tools were (especially the pliers) in such a compact package.
The reason I really miss it is it was the perfect multi-tool for inconspicuous carry at church or at parties. I thought of it as my "Sunday-go-to-meeting" multi-tool.

For me the juice series was never small enough or light enough to replace something like the skeletool in my pocket. For plyering, cutting and being able swap bits the skeletool is just more robust, plus it does have a pocket clip. If they intend the free t series to take over they really need to up the blade steel since it seems like they are marketing it as a multifunction knife and not as a multitool.

I still EDC as CS4 nearly every day. 100% agree that a modern juice equivalent is needed. Personally, my ideal tool would be a mix of the CS4 and the KE4. I don't need the corkscrew on the CS4 or the serrated blade on the KE4, but if I could get the scissors, file, saw, and can opener on one tool, that sure would do it.
Regarding the change in blade length, I may be misremembering, but I believe that at the time that the 2nd generation Juices came out, the TSA was expected to make a rule change allowing a max 2.6" blade in carry-ons, and the shorter blade was designed in anticipation of this rule change that never ended up being adopted. I could have this wrong, but it's what I'm recalling.
Have to disagree with you on the bit exchanger. The full profile Juice phillips is SO GOOD. I would not give that up for a bit exchanger. If you have room for the bit cards, you have room for a Wave.

Carried a Jiuce S2 blue for about 20 years as my EDC. For work, it is a Wave. When the scissors finally became unusable (tried everything from sharpening to voodoo magic) I sent it in for the Leatherman warranty. I knew I wasn't getting it back. They replaced it with a Wingman. Close but no cigar compared to my Juice. I like a lightweight pocket carry...not a clip carry. And since Leatherman canceled the Squirt too, I'm looking at alternatives. The Wingman now resides in my photo backpack.

what no one seems to be talking about, though? the juice (at least in the Xe6 and pro versions) has a layout accomodating 5 full-sized tools in a sensible fashion (or even 6 should be possibke, if you don't need a corkscrew..)

    @PeteYates-yc3fq ปีที่แล้ว

They have a pocket clip if you look for it. The corkscrew is a must have for me and now leatherman have abandoned it I look elsewhere for multi-tools.. except I found a CS4 in a greek chandler - June 23. Silly price of 150€. But I had to have it.

I'm a victorinox fanboy, but these Juice S2's are just fantastic. If for whatever reason I had to carry a leatherman it would be one of these.

Right. They should bring it back… or a reasonable facsimile. The thinner pliers tip and the long scissors were good. The KF4 was the winner for me in that series. No cork screw. But like you said, there’s room among users for the cork screw models.

I have had the CS4 for years and I have just got myself the XE6 on the new release. IMHO the XE6 is the equivalent of the SAK "Handyman", the XE6 having the diamond file giving it the edge.

By the way, the Victorinox corkscrew accessories also fit this Leatherman corkscrew.

    Ha ha ha ha ha..
I have worked on many shipping docks..
I used to hate a straight edged blade..
As i was constantly cutting rope and twine and straps.this is back when most guys carried a buck knife..
    Ha ha ha ha ha
    Remember those days ?
.then i got a hold of a serrated blade pocket knife around 1985-1986
Since then i only use the serrated blade.even for food.remember the ginsu ha ha ha ha ha
Amyhow.after watching and listening to you and other guys....i think i will give the straight edge another try..
I will keep it sharp and try to only use the straight edge to see if it works for me too..
    Thanx TX

Good morning. Enjoy all of your video’s for a long time now! Please keep them coming. I am swapping out the plier head on a rebar to my wave( doesn’t have the replaceable cutters) thought why not? Having trouble getting the brass washers(spacers) back into the plier head to put it back together-any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you and have a good day

i bought the xe6 last year. Luckily the local seller has 2 remaining new units at that time. I think the Xe6 is unique and feels different. The sound of the tool clicking into place is just different (much better than my Charge TTi, surge). The construction / built quality is much closer to what i experienced on a workchamp XL or even swisstool spirit

Leatherman should make an all locking tool in this size range. The KF4 is nice......but instead of getting rid of saw/awl with scissors/ can opener.....they should get rid of serrated blade. Can make other half serrated...or leave plain. I like the full phillips driver....not a fan of half drivers...

If you missed the boat on the Juice S2, carry a SAK Super Tinker and a Knipex Cobra XS pair as a substitute. Same or better functionality.

If someone really needs multitool, forget value/money mantra. Buy the best tool fits your needs (+/- $20 is no big deal).

UK knife laws are for non locking blades 3 inches and under, I don't see why they would change the knife blade in the second version when the first version is legal to carry in the UK

I have had the Juice S2 in Orange (original) for about 20 years now. The only thing I have had to do is sharpen the blade. Its solid, small and I got a new leatherman carrying case I keep on my belt at all times. Its great

My question is that did Leatherman abandon the Juice for price point? Giving the cheaper price multi tools to Taiwan and China to produce knowing that dollar for dollar they would have a hard time making a profit on them. Look at all the great American companies that are now owned by the Chinese. I think it is great to have two great multi tool companies making their products here in the USA.

The folding Leatherman bit exchanger is stupid. Why not just make one side of the handle from solid steel with a magnetic 1/4" hex hole in the end?

I always felt that the juice wasn’t enough & I was into gerber even though I wasn’t totally satisfied with it. Then my wife’s aunt gave me a Leatherman sidekick for Christmas and I instantly realized that it had exceptionally better quality than the gerber and I loved it. The sidekick is larger than the juice but it’s on the slim end of their lineup. Clips in my pocket and has everything I need. Needle nose pliers, wire cutters/strippers, 3D phillips and 2 flatheads, bottle and can opener, serrated blade. From the closed position it quickly deploys clip point blade and wood saw. Only drawback is no scissors but I have a SAK Champ I also edc and my Leatherman Raptor is my favorite 🤩.
