  • In this video the guys will show you how to replace the fuel pump in a 1999 Chevrolet Suburban 1500. Although this procedure was done on a 1999 Chevy Suburban the process will be similar on any vehicle with an in tank fuel pump.

    I just replaces mine on a 01 suburban.Jacked up the rear blocked it with tire stands. Tank was half full of gas was not a problem. Used the floor jack to support the tank. Lowered it down towards back of sub and was able to get to pump and replace. Took me 2 hours.

    I checked my 1999 fuel pump and it made that unique sound. I replaced the fuel pump relay sensor, air filter and gas filter. Before cranking it up, I pour a bottle of fuel injector cleaner in the gas tank. I tried starting it one time but no luck. So I sprayed starter fluid in the plastic container that's attached to the top of the injectors. My Truck started I drove for an hour and parked but continued to keep the engine on. I drove and parked for almost 4 hours. Happy to say no fuel pump was needed. If it wasn't for this video I would have cave in and followed my no longer mechanic advice. Thanks for the heads up. From me and my Heavy Chevy a.k.a the CHAMP..

    We installed a new fuel pump on our 1999 GMC Suburban 5.7L L31 CSPI engine with 203,000 miles and it has vapor lock. According to our sisters friend that did the work...we need a new engine as it will not start. You video filled in a lot of information Thanks!

    • @GregorysGarage
      @GregorysGarage  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +William Gallant Vapor lock is caused by heat. It's uncommon in my opinion to get Vapor lock on a fuel injected engine. Why do you think it needs a new engine? - Greg

    • @Aerospaceman
      @Aerospaceman 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Gregory's Garage I agree with you, vapor is caused by heat and hence you have vapor lock. The guy is a certified diesel mechanic, replaced the fuel pump, said he had pressure by gauge, yet the truck refuses to start. He then said vapor lock, and that the spider needs to be replaced or the engine replaced because it has over 200,000 miles. I feel that we can still get more mileage and there is no vapor lock. This all started because the truck began chugging, then it finally quit. I thought it might have been the ignition module. Anyhow the guy told my wife because the fuel pump was so bad that the new pressure caused the spider to fail?

      What year is your Suburban?

    • @Aerospaceman
      @Aerospaceman 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's been a year operating with a fuel pump sending unit, and we ended up replacing the SPI with the MPI which works much better. During this year we have been using the trip odometer as the gas gauge moves erratically at all times. When it gets a little warmer than single digits and the ice melts I'll check for a bad ground.

      At least! I had to have a shop replace the fuel pump on my other 99 Suburban several years ago. It cost over $800. Today my neighbor and I fixed my Burb and it cost less than $200 in parts and new tools.

  • @GregorysGarage
    @GregorysGarage  11 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    There could be a few different things wrong but most likely it's a problem with the sending unit. Bad thing is the sending unit is part of the fuel pump and to fix it you will have to replace the pump. You could check for good connections to the fuel pump but this will involve lowing the tank to where you can access the top of it.
    Greg

  • @GregorysGarage
    @GregorysGarage  11 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    We choose to show how to disconnect the lines once we had the tank removed. It was almost impossible to show us disconnecting the lines while the tank was still connected as there wasn't enough room. We also showed the tool we used and how we had to modify it. I believe the way we did it was more helpful since we could show a better view of the lines.

    What was the problems/ symptoms why they had to change the connector pigtail on the fuel pump

  • @WorldwideBeagle
    @WorldwideBeagle 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    The new connector is mandatory even if the old one fits. GM has a tech bulletin that says many of the dead pumps were caused by high resistance and failing connectors. Many pumps that were installed without a new connector have the new pump fail in three weeks to one year. And you must replace the inline fuel filter or the warranty on the pump is void.

    • @GregorysGarage
      @GregorysGarage  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the information.
      Greg

    • @WorldwideBeagle
      @WorldwideBeagle 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Greg Cook The Technical Bulletin is #04-06-04-088C Aug 24 2006 and can easily be found by Googling. Note that GM only found problems with the square Metri Pack 150 connector. - Not the GT 280 connector. The GT280 connector is the one currently used on replacements - Delphi and ACD for sure. Nevertheless, since its CLEAR the pump draws lots of amps before it croaks, IMHO, replacing an old GT280 with a new one is a lot easier than dropping the tank again in a year for another dead pump.
      I am not so sure the Metri Pack connector was so bad, but GM did not anticipate that users would (1) NOT change the fuel filter ever and (2) run the pump dry; which causes the pump to draw more amps fighting against crap in the old filter. The connector burns/arcs from the amps - raising resistance in the circuit and then the resistance causes the pump to die. In other words, the GT280 connector seems to do a better job of handing higher than designed for amps.
      Let me make one last pitch for fuel filters. I have seen 88-2003 GM trucks and burbs goes 150k+ with no fuel pump problems IF the fuel filter is changed every 20k/once a year AND the tank does not go below 1/4 or so. The ACD pro stainless steel filters are only $8 (use new O rings - 84 cents at the dealer). Delphi and Carter now state that install of a new pump or module without a new inline filter instantly voids warranty.
      Sorry for the long reply -- I am just perturbed by all the threads that say "I replaced my fuel pump 3 months ago and the crummy pump just died again-GM sucks, Delco sucks, Delphi sucks, etc. etc."
      Good video by the way.

      @stuff2426 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Peter Rudy
      I'm not debating the need to replace the filter. However, the filter is after the pump. Meaning, the fuel goes through the pump before it goes through the filter on the way to the engine. Why would the filter replacement be tird to voiding the warranty on the pump? The filter doesn't protect the pump as far I can tell.

    • @WorldwideBeagle
      @WorldwideBeagle 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Stuff it's not that the new fuel filter protects the pump per se, it's that a new filter flows easier and reduces the back pressure on the pump. If the filter has water or crap in it, the pump has to work that much harder, drawing more amps and burning up the pump and connector. Gm uses a very tiny filter for engines that burn lots of fuel. Many techs believe if the tiny $6 filter was replaced every 10k, the pump would last far longer. One mechanic took apart a dozen GM dead pumps. Each had burned up from drawing excessive amps and none had simply wore out.

    From what I can tell from reading your post, the only things left are the fuel lines and some small hoses attached to the top of the tank. None of this would hold your tank in place. If you have removed the straps the tank should move even with the filler and vent hoses attached. I would probably use a pry bar and try to break it loose.

    Make sure you get an ac/delco pump, those aftermarket pumps are trash and won't last. Also make sure to never run your tank below one fourth, because the pump needs to remain submerged in fuel to lubricate and cool it. It'll burn them out faster than jack sprout if you drive on empty in GM vehicles.

      The original design of the electrical connector was a bad design and most new pumps come with a new better designed connector. So if your new pump comes with a new connector then I would suggest replacing it if it's never been replaced before. The new connector should be different from the original one. If yours is the same then your fuel pump may have been replaced before. I would double check all the connections.
