You are never boring. If I lived near you I'd be round as often as possible. I tried to sell on line but it didn't work out because I was selling what I wanted to make not necessarily what others wanted to buy.
Ah, yes, that is another aspect of the whole selling game that I didn't mention in this video. This is true for me also right now - if I don't make the classes that people really want, they won't sell. It's a balancing act between doing enough of what I want to do and what others want me to do.
Hi Kelly, Andrew here, as a master watchmaker aswel as a masterclock maker, I had to learn to do business not giving my skills away. This was why I went to business classes, but it took 20 years of hard work to receive, $25 to look at the item, $85 perhour, then parts, batteries have to be seperate pricing per battery per watch, this perday was one page, my ledger was per customer, and a page permonth, for tax. All monies went into the bank, and every week I got a wage, this was hard in the beginning. Postage was another page, then everything went on my work laptop, not my personal computer. Life was hard work in the beginning, it was hard when I retired, so I went back to work as a high school teacher, now after retirement again, working as a professional tutorial master. Payment method is totally different in payments from parents, so weaving has more hours than year's ago. I believe your tutorials are helpful aswel as informative, I really enjoy them ❤️, thankyou for placing them on this median .
Yes for a photography video. The problem I run into is that I have to photograph 22" or larger pillows. That requires a larger background, etc. and I admit my perfectionism comes out big time.
My sister keeps telling me I should sell my weaving/knitting as a business. Now I’ll point her to your video so she understands what she is suggesting. It certainly isn’t as easy as she thinks which I intuitively guessed but didn’t have the words and specifics. Wonderful educational content!
While I don't often sell my yarn items, I do sell the product of my other creative interest -- stories. Obviously being an author is a bit different in that I can sell multiple copies of books without having to hand-craft each copy (thank GOODNESS!), but so much of what you've talked about here is applicable to being a professional author, as well. Especially the part about it being a business--and that involves a lot more than sitting down and writing (or weaving) every day with hardly anything else to occupy your time. I just love to sit in my studio and watch your videos and it does feel just like chatting with a weaving friend 😊 I always come away feeling inspired, thank you!
This was very informative and interesting. There us so much to learn about starting up a business. I liked the way you explained everything. I used to help my sister on video shoots and with editing videos so I know a little about the tremendous amount of time it takes to get from the planning, shooting, and editing until you finally get it downloaded. Thank you so much for all your weaving videos. I appreciate your hard work so weaving is made easier for me!
I would love a video on product photography using one's phone and not a fancy camera! I seem to be able to take great photos of my cashmere goats and things around the homestead, but good product photography escapes me. Thanks!
To add to your points at around 35:43, the little details and thoughtful info in an email also help show that you are genuine, a real creator (not just a re-seller) and might help people understand the cost or value of what you make because it gives a better sense of how much time, effort and creativity has gone into your items.
Love your passion. I have been a Weaver off and on over the years, more for my own use and for gifts I am a spinner, knitter etc. but due to the restrictions caused by arthritis I am going to only do what I can and as I really love weaving then that's my choice. Like a lot of crafty people out there I do have a LOT of materials so what I make will depend on that.I do intend to join your site but I firstly have to unpack and assemble my latest RH loom. Time is of the essence with me as I'm in my early 80's but I do know what I want to weave and that is pictures. Sounds ambitious I know. Thankyou for all of the handy tips you have provided .
I love that you are adapting to your physical needs. I'm in my early 70's and my goal is to keep weaving till 85 or longer if possible. It's so hard to say no to our creative thoughts and goals, so I say YES!, go for it!
great video Kelly, there are very useful teachings as in all your videos, thanks for sharing your experiences and knowledge. It is essential to value not only the material, but I believe even more the time invested in all kinds of work that we do with our hands 😊
I wanted to try selling. I am in the UK though and looking on sites like Etsy (There are a couple in the UK) hand woven scarves as its the example used, are around £35 which by todays prices is $65. To compete I would have to sell at cost and not pay my self for the time :(
Yes, undercharging is an issue and doesn't help those who really want to make a business of it. I always encourage weavers to price their items properly.
