A Korean told me that there’s is a saying they have. When you study English, you begin laughing at first then you start to cry as you progress. When you study German, you first cry, then you laugh. German builds on itself more so than English or even Spanish. Word compounding can be quite helpful.
I originally wanted to learn it as a small child because I wanted to know what all of the adults were talking about, especially at Christmas time, when they were trying to keep things from the children. Eventually, I wanted to learn it because I have a strong sense of my German Heritage. Eventually, things came full circle because I now use German to keep things from my kids. LOL
I picked up German because I find it similar to Chinese (which is my first language and I am so proud of it), in the sense that words are made up of meaningful bits and can be very philosophical
An interesting fact I saw online is that German is the most common 2nd language in North Dakota, and it is the 3rd most spoken language (after English and Spanish) in many states in the American Midwest. For me personally, I always meet Germans travelers, so I would love to at least be able to great them.
A tip for everyone wanting to learn German, go there and stay there for a while. I live here since 2015, and can now basically speak fluent German.
After learning basics and just to understand how german works, it is easier to understand Franz Kafka's work even in my mother language, which is Polish. Germany really has a lot to offer when it comes to art and science!
I am going to start German class on coming WED. Wish me luck!

I study computer engineering and Deutschland is great for the people who want to work with artificial intelligence. I speak english, spanish is my native language and I'm learning german. Es ist schön! 👌
Sooo I started learning German the other day and i already feel like giving up because it seems so hard :( but this video really motivated me to keep going, thank youu💕
i started learning german because i found out i was german descent just before starting high school. it was also somewhat meant to trick me to keep me from my first choice, but that'll come later since i love it and want to get better understanding it, and my hunch was proven correct in how it felt like german might be an important language to learn. im glad you also said spanish and mandarin because those are the other two i've wanted to focus on! trying really hard to not get ahead of myself so i dont abandon my progress too soon before it's internalized longterm.
Strangely, every time I begin learning German, French words I haven't remembered for 25 years from Secondary School lessons pop into my mind. Most distracting. Now I'm undergoing chemotherapy in Southampton Hospital, I have time on my hands to focus on starting over with Sie Deutsch.
Cute video. As a speaker of German, teacher, tutor, I think you did a great presentation. Germany was at one time the technological-scientific capital of the world, example research on the use of portland cement. All languages are hard to learn for non-speakers but for me French is very challenging and Greek even more so. Where one lives determines which language one might need most. Here in the American Southwest, Spanish is popular as it it used a lot. One can understand Yiddish better knowing German. In your 4 minute video, you put in eine menge information. Thanks. Jay
Why am I here?? I'm a native German speaker haha It's nice to read people's stories about how and why they want to learn German. Kind of makes me proud it's my mother tongue😝😊
The band Rammstein got me interested in learning German. It’s so nice to go from not understanding anything to being able to sing and understand everything.
Got to say, you convinced me to want to learn German!!!! I have leaned to speak Italian, French, Brazilian Portuguese, and even Japanese. But now German is on my list!!! Thanks!!!!!
Your videos are awesome! I'm learning German, because I love how it sounds and I'm fond of German culture. To be honest, I am having a hard time sticking to just one language though, because I want to learn them all. lol
One thing that I have learned is that a lot of people think their country’s language is the hardest to learn. I think learning German will be useful to me because my mom’s side of the family is mostly German, and my dad’s side of the family is mostly Scandinavian.
That whole Christmas thing got me excited. I love Christmas! One of the reasons that I want to learn German is because several of the countries that are always on lists of the best places to live in the world have German as one of their main languages.
At minute 2:00 (reason #6). Sure enough English is a germanic Language. It certainly is. But I'd rather say that English is a "francizated" germanic Language (that is a germanic Language strongly affected by the french Language spoken by the Norman invaders from Normandy). For example, just have a look at the words that I wrote above. The word "Example" is probably "french" since in German it is completely different: "Beispiel". "Certainly" is probably "french" since in German it is completely different: "bestimmt". "Language" is probably "french" since in German it is completely different: "Sprache". "Invader" is probably "french" since in German it is completely different: "Eindringling" / "Eroberer". The word "probably" is probably "french" since in German it is completely different: "wahrscheinlich". The word "different" is probably "french" since in German it is completely different: "anders". To a minor extent, English was also affected by the North Germanic Languages spoken by the Viking, Norse and Danish invaders. For example, the word "are" of the verb "to be" is similar to the swedish word "är" of the verb "vara" (to be) or to the danish word "ar" of the verb "være" (to be).
I picked up learning German two and a half years ago, following their World Cup win. I had always wanted to learn German because of my family heritage. I've found German to be hard, but I love how the language is structured.
I took up German a few days ago. I like to do crazy things lol and I started to learn it because I love learning languages and love finding how the language works. I was going to take up German last year but I always found obstacles or excuses to not approach it because some people might say it's not a useful language cuz everyone in Germany speaks English. Nevertheless, we have to stick to what we love.
Ja, sehr gut! I've just started learning about a week ago, and this video is just refreshing to see. I'm so glad that others are also going along on this journey with me
I started with German about a year ago, but I switched to learning Russian because there are so many German English speakers. Like 70% of all German's know conversational English and only like 7% of Russians so I decided it would be easier for me to conversation with a Russian in Russian than expecting them to know English. Chances are that any Germans I meet are going to know English way better than I would know German.
You are adorable and this was such a fun video! I am a native English speaker but my family background is Spanish speaking. I took years of French in college as well, and when I discovered German, to me it was just fascinating and challenging and sounds very exotic to my Romance Language ears, so I am now learning German as an extreme beginner, but I LOVE the language. Thanks for the video, it was great!
I am quarter German (and very proud to be), sadly I don't speak German, I wish my dad teach it to me bilingually like he is but oh well. Anyway, I've been doing German at school for about a year and a half, just over ish and I love it. My teacher isn't the best ever and the lessons are a little boring but I overall love the language itself. My dad also helps me and teaches me new phrases. We speak to each other in a mainly English German mix. I use lots of German in my everyday speech too. People find it confusing but meh, I don't care. With my knowledge of the wonderful language that is German, it's helped me to learn both Swedish and Dutch. I take my Swedish pretty darn seriously as well as German. Dutch is just for fun. I'm a bit of a language nerd, it runs in my family. German can be confusing at some points but it's mainly pretty straight forward (to me, idk if my quarter German-ness helps). So go out and learn German!
I really like reason #9 Ridiculously Rewarding. It sounds like you had your moments where you really struggled with the language, but persevered with it and managed to turn a negative into a positive. I'm still struggling with Danish, but now I am also trying to reframe it as ridiculously rewarding too!
😊 I had a German "Oma" (not my actual grandmother) come to live with us briefly when I was in grade 9. And I started to pick it up nicely from her. But living in Pierre Trudeau's multicultural Canada, I was forced to take French just as I was learning German at home and I just got so confused I sort of gave up. Now my son and I are learning German together. It's about trying to finish something I started.
I learned English because is the worldwide spoken language, not because I really wanted to learn it, but as a "duty". Then, as the last year was almost over and I'd aready had learned English (not on a fluent level), I started to wondering: "which foreign language is MY foreign language???" Well, everyone has their own favourite, loved foreign language but me. E.g. my girfriend loves French. Since French is similar to my native language - which is Portuguese - I gave it a shot. I even bought a grammar book and all. But after 2 weeks of French I gave it up. -I'm done with Romance languages. Maybe in the future, I thought. Then I found german and I just fell in love with it. I was reading Nietzsche in my native language and I started to wondering how cool would it be to read Nietzsche in the original form. Well, I can barely understand what the madmen said even in Portuguese but anyway, that helped me to choose my foreign language. The virus came. The lockdown came. So, perfect setting to learn German! And that's what I did. I'm learning German since the first weeks of lockdown. Such philosophical language..the way the words are put on the setences...Well, I'm sure of my choice; I'm learning German from now on. I hope that in the future I read back to this comment and I see how much I've learned and feel proud of myself and my choice!
Germany has powerful and strong economic but every german and people frome german speaking countries that I’ve met can speak English very well maybe the reason why french or spanish is better choices for the third language to learn
Also the chistmastree is from germany. These tradition came to england during 18th and 19th century, when many english royals came from hanover. The influence of german language was much more earlier, when the (don´t know the english word) angeln from Denmark and the Saxons from Northgermany immigrant britain. Some english told me, there´s still a part in england called "Saxony".
Reason 10: German is a beautiful language. It's oftentime mocked for allegedly sounding harsh or aggressive and yes, there certainly are such aspects to it. But german can also flow like a glittering stream of sound, or dance wildly like wildwater down a mountainside. Reason 11: While learning to speak grammatically correct german is quite difficult, you can communicate in german even if your grammar is all over the place. You may sound awkward as fuck, but you can be understood.
I have German as one of the languages that I am "cat's paw" touching. I have completed a couple of units (on Duolingo) and I might be tempted later on, but at the moment I am "full on" with French and Esperanto. I will have a serious go at learning German, as I bought an expensive BBC course from a Language Book Shop a few weeks ago. At least that is a start!
Really cool video!! I've googled on German learning difficulties a bit, and got sort of scared about those genders stuff and so many possible conjunctions! You helped chill out and feel more excited to learn it.
I will start a german languange course on 2nd of May here in Albania which is called Goethe Zentrum and will go there with my 2 friends.I need to learn german because expect the fact that I like it, I need to learn it to study in Germany in the future .
Nice video! I would recommend working on your pronunciation. I am American so I am currently working on improving this myself. You say "foonf" at the end for "fünf". The ü sound is quite different. It takes a while to get the hang of it. It is more like the "ewwww" sound we English speakers make when we are disgusted at something. The ü sound was one of the more difficult for me to start speaking properly, along with the soft "ch" sound. You say "Warum nickt" where it should be "warm nicht". Even saying "Warum nisssht" will already get you closer to sounding more like a native German speaker :-)
yeah i just am german so i got no problems with it but i find it kinda sweet how confusing it is to other people, because i think that some other languages are a hell lot more difficult then german.
Can't agree more with the familial ties one. Conquer German, and you can pull off a fluent in three months in pretty much any other Germanic language (except *ahem* English)
I chose to study german as a second foreign language (after english, I'm french) instead of spanish because I wanted to be in the same class of my friend... Honestly, best choice I've ever made. People who are learning german are more rare, it can be very helpful to find a job, german people are so cool and lovely. Their culture is amazing, you can visit Berlin, this city is very interesting if you love history... I really love germany and I'd like to go to german's Christmas markets.
9 Reasons to learn Hindi. It is a ridiculously underrated language even though it is just behind English in the number of english speakers in the world. Plus it helps you in many other languages and is a part of the Indo-European language family.
German is probably third on my list of languages I want to learn. I went through 4 years of German at high school but language education in English schools is pretty terrible so I don't remember much. Though weirdly if I get stuck trying to remember a word in Gàidhlig (my current target language) my brain will sometimes just drop in the word in German if I know it. But yeah, it feels like unfinished business so going back and learning it properly is something I hope to do. Aaaand now I have to re-watch The Edukators.
The biggest reason for me to learn german would be to read Kant's Critique of Pure Reason in it's original german even though I can barely read it in English 😂😂😂
I'm considering learning german, I'm fascinated by the old Germanic roots in English and the similarities between our languages. But I'm not sure how useful it would be in Canada. I'm debating it.
But anyway russian is more difficult than german,i am russian and i learn german and english, english is very is for me and english's knowledge helps me so much to understand more german because when i started to learn german i didn't understand times, but now i now that german has easier times than english,my russian's knowledge help me with german prepositions cause it is really hard, but i think that russian language is more hard and has more compound words.
I consider me as lucky because my parents are russian so I can speak russian fluently but I was born in Germany so I also speak German and since second grade I learn English.
fünf is actually pronounced in a different way but it still be a special word because it's one of only 5 words in the german language that ends with -nf-
If you didn't understood this text, that translate it into your language
I would prefer to learn Germany over any other European language simply because of the spirit of the German people! They're among the most progressive and humanitarian!
Everyone only refers to germany when they talk about the german language but german is spoken in other countries too just with different dialects^.^ Austria for example we have the greatest dialects;-)
Hello everyone! I am german and I hope that all who try to learn my language have succes😀 German is very difficult😅
Oh nein
Johanna Oeder what about offering some help over here? I need a partner to talk with...and ze best choice is a native German...

Wie bin ich denn hier gelandet ? 😂😂😂
I'm learning German because it's very similar to my native English. German speaking countries have really solid economic powers.
the reason why i learn deutsch....because i want to get scholarship in German😂
I started learning German today! It’s my first second language. I’ve so far learned more than 30 words! In under an hour!!
Hope you had a good journey!
+Narata Ahh that's really interesting! :)
Lindsay Dow
The Amish(numerous in many states) speak a German dialect.
And the Pennsylvania Dutch, or Pennsylvania Deitsch, too. It´s the german Dialect from the Pfalz region.
A tip for everyone wanting to learn German, go there and stay there for a while. I live here since 2015, and can now basically speak fluent German.
You wouldnt say 'es freut mich sehr viel', remove the viel, bisdes that, ist dein deutsch sehr gut.
Yoshi i called sonst ist dein deutsch gut
Feldwebel Dummkopf haha Same 😂😂🤷♀️
I learn it so I can understand my family in Germany better. We reconnected with them and I can't wait to meet them in person.
Me too!
I am learning German, because I live in Germany (although I'm from Denmark), and because my sister and my parents speak it.

Love the video! Mine is "Kafka wrote German" And no matter how hard something is, if it helps you read Kafka better it's worth it
i love this, understanding german literature is definitely rewarding in my book.
I am going to start German class on coming WED. Wish me luck!

+Clara Fairchild Aww, that's awesome! I'm glad it has helped! :D
Go you! It's not that hard, I promise. I'll have to blog some tips for getting started.
You shouldnt give up :) ^^
Cause the best philosophers wrote in German as Einstein did
You're making me fall in love with so many languages with your videos, especially German... I'm already learning Japanese and Spanish! Help!-

I recently started learning German because I love German music and culture as well as I would love visit many of the German speaking countries
Learning it for the philosophy texts and for relative ease as I am fluent in English and Swedish!
I've always had an interest in the German language ever since I was a child (I don't know why). I just like the way it sounds... It's satisfying.
Got to say, you convinced me to want to learn German!!!! I have leaned to speak Italian, French, Brazilian Portuguese, and even Japanese. But now German is on my list!!! Thanks!!!!!

RavenPuff Mozart was a composer like Beethoven but Cro sings Pop songs😂 (sorry for bad english I m learning it :3)

Reason 11: While learning to speak grammatically correct german is quite difficult, you can communicate in german even if your grammar is all over the place. You may sound awkward as fuck, but you can be understood.
I learned German because i live in Germany!... Hallo an alle deutschen
+Paul Howlett 'cat's paw' touching! This is such a great description! :D Ooo, good luck with your German course when you get to it! :)
I found german way easier than French for example, I love the structure but der, die, das is just ew
+The Art of German Thanks! :D
Yayyyyyy!!!...Love these type of videos !...Was waiting for the German version of it........Thank you!!!😊😊👏
+Oh Goodness me Honey Cool! It's been a long time coming! :)
Me too, I was so excited to write the reasons with Lindsay ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I love the way she pronounces "Glühwein". It sounds soo cute!:D
yeah i just am german so i got no problems with it but i find it kinda sweet how confusing it is to other people, because i think that some other languages are a hell lot more difficult then german.
German is pretty cool. Now I loving it.Wow!!!
Can't agree more with the familial ties one. Conquer German, and you can pull off a fluent in three months in pretty much any other Germanic language (except *ahem* English)
+Israel Lai "Except English" haha! ;)
Extremely talented you are ❤️
I wanna learn German cause it sounds cool when you yell it
i am preparing to do my master graduation in germany
Watching this as a german girl is so much fun
I took it because Spanish was full. Learned to love it!
i learn german 4 or 5 years ago,and i like so much because this culture like me so much!
Cooles Video, gut gemacht! Abo hast du ;)
+Prenna The Edukators is one of my favourite films! Love it! Good luck going back to your German :)
I am still learning German language, seeing your video made my motivation to keep on learning it. ❤️
Guten Tag, ich heiße Erika, zea erfreut.
Danke. German is especially useful as a business language. Germany has a very strong economy.
learning german was always my childhood dream :) und natürlich finde ich es auch süß :)
Good that I grow up with German language in Switzerland
The biggest reason for me to learn german would be to read Kant's Critique of Pure Reason in it's original german even though I can barely read it in English 😂😂😂
+William Stewart Cool1 :)
I'm considering learning german, I'm fascinated by the old Germanic roots in English and the similarities between our languages. But I'm not sure how useful it would be in Canada. I'm debating it.
Deutsche hier ?😂
But anyway russian is more difficult than german,i am russian and i learn german and english, english is very is for me and english's knowledge helps me so much to understand more german because when i started to learn german i didn't understand times, but now i now that german has easier times than english,my russian's knowledge help me with german prepositions cause it is really hard, but i think that russian language is more hard and has more compound words.
But russian language has a lot of words, too many words from german.
Red
Iam german and i want to learn russian ^^
I consider me as lucky because my parents are russian so I can speak russian fluently but I was born in Germany so I also speak German and since second grade I learn English.
I love Russian accents
Der Weihnachtsmarkt ist einfach klasse
German is a perfect language because it is a serious and authoritative language.
I really enjoy these "9 Reasons to Learn __________." videos in the series. Thanks for producing them.
+mj g Awesome! You're welcome! I enjoy making them! :)
I’m trying to learn some German on Duolingo ;). It’s definitely hard but, many words being similar to English, makes it more approachable
its not pronounced like "fumf"
more like "finf"
I'm from Austria and i almost understand every word of Flemish, so it is true that it helps you with other languages.
fünf is actually pronounced in a different way
but it still be a special word because it's one of only 5 words in the german language that ends with -nf-
If you didn't understood this text, that translate it into your language
Good video 👍🏻 I agree with everything you said. I definitely found it challenging. I have a long way to go.
i live in sweden and we speak swedish and have to learn english but we
also need to choose between spanish and german as a extra language
I like to study languages and I want to help people to learn them too. Besides, I wanna live in Europe someday and help refugees. :)
