You are listening to a medley so this Is actually several songs. 1) The Wellerman - A whaling shanty 2) Drunken Sailor - I want to say this is a navy shanty about discipline. 3) Leave Her Johnny - A shanty about putting ashore or a foundered ship. 4) Cape Cod Girls - Though they modified the first verse "Cape Cod Ships ain't got no sails." Should be "Cape Cod girls ain't got no combs." 5) Santiana - This is a story shanty Shanties are normally working songs and normally you have one man the "Shantyman" who sings the verse, and then the task is done and everyone sings the chorus. So for example in "Cape Cod Girls," - The shantyman sings "Cape Cod ships ain't got no sails." Then everyone sings, "Heave away, Haul away" During that the men singing the chorus would do the combined task, pull the line to raise the sail on the Heave and the Haul and relax or fresh grip on the aways. So "Heave" - pull, "away," fresh grip on the line, "Haul," - pull, "away," fresh grip on the line. In some cases, the shantyman changes from verse to verse, and over time shanties would pick up extra verses. So it is possible in some arrangement of "Cape Cod Girls" there is a verse about "Cape Cod Ships ain't got no sails." Shanties like "Santiana" or "The Wellerman" were often sung by the crew who were larking (resting off duty) because unless the shantyman added a "To Me" or a call there was not a real place to coordinate effort though sometimes the beat would be used to set a pace for things like scrubbing the deck.
Adam is the only vocal percussionist I know that has introduced castanets vocally into an A Capella performance, and it was amazing to hear in this medley. For real creativity, check out the transitions they do in Meet In The Middle. Even while in quarantine at the time at their respective homes they still pull off a seamless effort in the handoffs to each performing member. Truly amazing.
Don Mclean picked them to back him up on his 50th anniversary self cover of American Pie. It is wonderful. I grew up listening to this song, since it came out when I was about 13 and they helped keep the original feel of the song, but did it in slightly new style of arrangement. Adam worked his butt of doing all the percussion.
Sea shanties were sung by sailors while hauling lines on sails and anchors and stuff. They needed to pull and hold in a synchronized way, so the song provided very good synchronization. Some of the songs weren't work songs, but were for entertainment when work was done. They have put together a few of the better shanties into this song. They obviously arrange very well. Home Free recorded this in pieces from their own homes and then mixed it together. I would love to hear them try Old Maui and Barrett's Privateers.
As I understand it Chance is a big fan of sea shanties, which is a particular genre of folk music that sailors used to sing, and once that tik tok thing blew up he managed to convince the others to do a medley of a bunch of different ones.
Yes, Chance is a fan of Sea Shanties and did a wonderful job of arranging these together. Absolutely Love this Medley !!! But during his Coffee Time with Chance he mentioned that Austin actually brought the popularity of Sea Shanties to their attention.
Austin's voice is platinum. Rob's voice is butter. (Blue-eyed soul is safe with The Beard.) Chance's voice is gold. Adam's voice, on those rare occasions when he sings, is a bell. And Tim's voice is magma. Aren't Adam's castanets awesome in this?
If you want to experience Tim’s crazy 5+ octaves range, watch these two back to back: Brothers in Arms, followed by My Maria (Austin Brown and Tim Foust with guitar). You won’t know how to process what you have heard!!! Great, great reactions, please keep them coming.
All of the videos they did in quarantine are quality. They gave us so much music even though they were apart. Plus they all do separate stuff as well. They're pretty much everywhere you look on the internet, other than Adam who is far too chaotic to be trusted on social media!! As for Rob, wait until you get to Dreamer, End of the Road, Cross that Bridge... Etc...
You’re well on your way to becoming a Home Fry. Listen to End Of The Road - Rob Leads, When A Man Loves A Woman - Austin leads, Cover Me Up - Chance leads, Brothers in Arms - Tim leads……then you’ll be ready for Mayday. Enjoy the journey.
Home Free phoned this one in during COVID. Could not get together so remotely did their parts and it was edited into this awesome video so they could put out some content during the epidemic without having to travel to the studio. Austin Brown was having too much fun using his musical theater background.
The songs are named in order(1)Wellerman, (2)Drunken Sailor, (3)Leave her, Johnny (4)bound for Australia, (5)Santiana. They are all classed as Sea Shanties and what they did here was create a Medley of all the songs. Each song has been done many times by many different bands. I like "Irish Drinking music" and these all pop up while I'm listening to my Darby Ogill station on Pandora.
How good are these guys? The fun & energy in this is infectious. This was done during quarantine so none of the guys were even together. The editing of this was great & was done in the Tik Tok style. Love all the guys parts, with Tim's rumbling bass underlying it all. And Adam's beatboxing is phenomenal as always including castanets. Amazing how he increased the tempo from one song to another.
Another banger reaction. And in that 3 hour road trip you could hear songs of all genre's as these guys are just phenomenal. I hope you were talking about reacting to American Pie featuring Don McLean....Don was 75 when they recorded that one. It's off the charts GREAT. That one & this one, the Sea Shanty Medly were short during quarantine, so the guys were in their own homes, all across the country (Chance in Los Angeles, Rob in Minneapolis area, Adam in Mankato, Minnesota & Tim in one Nashville suburb & Austin in another one in Nashville). Their editor needs a special grammy award for editing...also look up Meet in ther Middle, it's another incredible song & edit job...spectacular...the transitions are amazing...they had to record singing this, then record themselves lip synching & then the editor had to put it altogether
I agree about Tic Toc, they should be coming down!!! HOME FREE, THIS IS GREAT...GET THIS OFF TIC TOC! THE BEST COSTUME AWARD GOES, OF COURSE, TO TIM!!!
This vid was recorded during lockdown, each member has a recording booth at there homes, they recorded it and sent it to the mixer. They then recorded the vid at there homes and it was then mixed into this form with the music. This is a collection of songs from the early 1800’s that were often sung by sailor’s to help them keep time hosting the sails.
How fun was that?!! Adam was blown away with the castanet sounds and Tim ... - ...is just Tim 🙃 They did some of their best work in quareenteen. Great reaction!
Try "Country Medley", "End of the Road", "How Great Thou Art", "Bless The Broken Road", "Seven Bridges Road", "Blue Ain't Your Color", "Helplessly Hoping" , to name a few!!
Home Free having fun. Austin is displaying all his theatrical skills in this video, Adam's castanet sounds added greatly to the video, Rob looks like the captain of the ship. Adam is great with the beatboxing and castanets
I do believe this was done during the quarantine from last year. They each performed this from their own homes!! They weren't even in the same towns!! That just shows their incredible talent!!
The Sea Shanty Medley was shot during COVID19 Quarantine so each of them shot their own videos and they put this together to keep putting out content for us all to enjoy. We are veery lucky fans, this was released to the HF TH-cam page.
It was done during quarantine in their respective homes. They also did a cover of the Statler Brother's "Flowers On The Wall" during quarantine at their houses.
Just subbed for more Home Free. Don't you love the way Adam kept increasing the tempo...and WOW those castanets at the end! There are several Adam Rupp drum / beatboxing solos on TH-cam that you might like. Almost any song of theirs is excellent...they just keep getting better.
I would love to have been there to see Tim's neighbors reacting to him standing in a boat in his yard, dressed like a pirate and singing his heart out.
They all have their own careers as well, and are supportive (and collaborative) of/with each other. Broad range of talent, especially Tim's 5+ ocave range.
This was just one of their videos done during the quarantine, where they're all in their separate spaces. They're usually done in and around their own homes in three different states, although I can't tell if that's the case with this one. All these songs are traditional sea (not she) shanties. I used to hang out with a Celtic band in the 80s who regularly performed Drunken Sailor on stage. I doubt this medley video has anything to do with tictok. Take a look at HF's other videos done during the quarantine: Quarantine, Down To the Honkytonk, and Sunday Best are the ones that come to my mind first. There's also I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For by Peter Hollens feat. Home Free.
It's a Medley of lots of traditional Sea shanties. Like the sailor equivalent of the army's Marching songs. It was to keep everyone in time hauling on the ropes. A lot us learn these as kids in little school.
Just caught up on all your Home Free reactions!! Loving your reactions, so great and funny! I do love the major A cappella groups but In my opinion Home Free is the best! Not a weak voice in the group. Additionally they are great to their fans, humble, no egos and they love hanging out together, which will be obvious as you continue! They are guys anyone would want to have a beer with ! Lol There is so many great choices, Brothers in arms is the most beautiful blending of voices, When a man loves a women is fantastic and they do a cover of Boyz II Men End of the Road that will blow you away! Looking forward to the next one! 🤗👍
A new sub and I want to throw my suggestion in with the rest of them. Would like to see you react to their cover of One Man Band. Absolutely beautiful harmonies, and watch closely and you will see that Adam Rupp is singing making it a 5 part harmony. Love your reactions and can't wait to see your next one!!
You are being sucked into the world of Acappella. There are 3 groups you are gonna hear about. They are all top tier. 3 different sounds and 3 different styles All amazing. Home Free, Pentatonix and Voiceplay. At the moment Home Frees bass Tim and Voiceplays bass Geoff (Jeff) Castellucci are neck and neck with who sings the deepest. I love every single group and I hope you are buckled in because if the Home Fries love you then the Pentaholics will love you and the Voiceplayers will be in here as well. I am happy you are loving them.
Flowers on the Wall, Blue Ain't Your Color, Helplessly Hoping, In The Blood, and Any Damned Thing by Home Free. Crazy, Bless The Broken Road, and Tim singing for his grandmother, and accompanying himself on the piano to (brain stuck) ..... originally Horalee.... HELP!!! Well, I have to look it up, darn.
Since it's Christmas time, please check out my all-time favorite Home Free song, "Do You Hear What I Hear?" Stunning visuals (filmed here in my state of Minnesota!), Tim's low notes come from the mines of Moria, and Adam's arrangement of the song is pure brilliance. Great reaction!
Another great reaction. The guys did a great job with this one. Adam Austin and Tim dressed to the tee for the older rendition of a sailor and Tim looking like Jack Sparrow. Chance and Rob in the more current dress of a sailor. I didn't notice until I watched this song a bunch and was told Tim is standing in a small boat. Thanks
It's medley of sea shantys...whaling sailing songs sung by sailors. Some of them we sang in grammar school back on the day. ..way back. When we were taught American songs like whaling and folk songs like -Suanee river by Stephen Foster... younger generation has missed a lot!
Adam's castanets' are my favorite! Their quarantine videos are all really creative. The released a song every 2 weeks during lockdowns, so they are all done well with then being so far apart. Meet in the middle is a really fun video.
There this girl and guy on TikTok, different accounts. The girl is Malinda and the guy is Bobby, they do a version of this song too. She’s soprano and he’s a bass, it’s SO cool! I believe they both have a TH-cam too. They also have a song with some others of hoist the colors
I think the Sea Shanty craze started on TikTok, with covers of "Wellerman's Song" so this is HF's homage to that format, creating the medley and adding their own stank to it.
This video was indeed shot with a nod to TikTok with the vertical filming and the logo. They separated the shanty's and posted them on TikTok and asked people to duet them. There were some really good duets! You're doing a great job with your reactions. One thing you've probably figured out, the Home Fries love nothing more than to watch new people fall in love with our guys! You'll likely be experiencing new membership growth because once it's known that you're reacting to Home Free, their fans will show up.
They were on a show called "The Sing Off" and won the 4th season, after Pentatonix won the 3rd season. Watch the versions with the judges reactions...I knew from day 1 they were the winners.
This ONE of many of their quarantine videos. Best "series " ever! Have Mrs Saucy watch When a man loves a woman, with you. They had be BEST APRIL fools videos, 3 teasers, then WHAM! Down to the Honky Tonk, Meet in the Middle, Haven't found what I'm looking for. Of course Quarantine starts it off. Thank you for the great reaction! Welcome to HomeFree rabbit hole!
Medley: the term for a mix of musical pieces spliced together. A lot of the joy of a medley is the interaction of the pieces (for better OR for worse--I've heard some funny, funny medleys of intentionally mismatched music...) in mood and tone, and the smoothness of the splicing. Medleys also let musicians show off a lot of melodies they really love but probably could not fit into one evening's performance without sacrificing other things they want to do.
The Wellerman apparently got popular on Tik Toc so they did this in the style of cell phone recordings often posted there. Yes, you need to hear their cover of American Pie with Don McLean. It's every bit as good as you are probably imagining. If you're liking Home Free, you really should check out Voiceplay, another top acappella group. I'd suggest comparing their version of 'Hoist the Colors' to this.
From what I've heard Chance came up with the idea and took some convincing to get the others on board. So thank you Chance. 😊 This is my neighbors favorite song whether he likes it or not.🤣 I get a lot of house cleaning done with this on a loop. Thanks for your reaction, love your enthusiasm . New sub here. You're very funny..😜
These are all real sea shanties, sung by sailors for a century or two. The group Voice Play did a Viking Sea Shanty called "My Mother Told Me." Try that one (Beware, yet another a capella rabbit hole)
Love Home Free. Every time I hear one of the boys doing a solo, then I feel that's my favourite but then one of the others gets a chance to shine and then I want to pick it a a favourite. All favourites! Tim with Everybody walking this Land & Brothers in Arms, Austin with When a man loves a woman and Love me Like That, Rob with End of the Road & Cross that Bridge , Chance with Cover Me up & Yours & Adam Rupp doing that beat boxing....wow. and the those awesome harmonies. Also love Helplessly Hoping, Go rest high on that mountain (Church sessions) & Do you hear what I hear & all the others So many more for you to enjoy. Great reaction.
this is in their song line up for their concert and it is so good live. i love them all but adam just blows me away! castanets?!?! really?!?! BTW, what in the hell was your goat doing?????
Oooh good, my favorite group!!! Love Home Free and subbing in hopes of more! For funny try Butts Remix and for Christmas season, Full of Cheer are both pretty funny
You have the option to get VIP tickets for their concerts. The Q&A VIP gives you an "up close" Q&A session with all of them plus a private performance of a song. The "Ultimate" VIP gives you that plus an autograph & photo session with them. I had Q&A VIP tickets for the concert last month & it was great! We got to ask questions for about 20 minutes & then they sang us a song. Oh, and they did the Sea Shantey Medley during the concert! BTW, don't know if you noticed but this was shot during quarantine. Each of them shot their audio & video separately. Austin & Tim are in Nashville, Adam & Rob are in the Minneapolis area, and Chance is in L.A. They have some amazing quarantine videos. They released a lot of new content during the quarantine/pandemic. They were dropping a new video every other Friday for awhile.
The did put it on TikTok and asked for Duets and Stitches....the vocal percussions are AMAZING in here...the bass hits the basement and stays there....and OMG....Vocal Castanets...Adam is amazing, you really need to see his Drum Solo and the 9 to 5 live with beatbox breakdown. I think that Adam has the largest vocal range, not for singing per se, but for the sounds he makes.
I should be embarrassed to say it, but when my ears aren't being filled with Home Free I feel like what I imagine an alcoholic must feel like. I don't just want to hear them, I need to hear them. Anyone else?
They did this & a bunch of other songs from each of their homes during the "plandemic" & they were all incredible! You should also check out their "Quarantine" that they did when the "lock down" first started! It's a hoot & so are you!🤣 I just discovered you today & started watching you react to your first Home Free experience & working my way up & I've been smiling & laughing😄 at you until my face hurts at your reactions of bewilderment to our guys!🤔😲 Please keep it up! We all need a laugh! 🤪
Now that we is talking about the sea and sailors. My I suggest to listen to: My mother told me - from Vikings. Adam Chance is feat. the hound and Fox. Your will hear Adam Chance baritone/dept. Love it..... Adam Chance have maid this and some other with the hound and Fox. The three voices together is great.....
This came up as a suggestion on my youtube, new subscriber hoping for more HF. Seeing you notice the Sing Off.. why not do a series of reactions to each individual episode, and learn more about the guys!! Great reaction, thank you
I just love watching new home fries I think you are hooked they have over 150 videos on TH-cam check out some of their performances on the sing off and see how good they were in 2013 and how much they have improved they we're amazing then Aldo
I really said SHE 😂😂😂🤦♂️🤦♂️
You saying “she” made me think of “she sells sea shells by the sea shore.” Lol 🤣
@@summerrea8751 hahaa!!!
Yes you did.
Over & Over
You are listening to a medley so this Is actually several songs.
1) The Wellerman - A whaling shanty
2) Drunken Sailor - I want to say this is a navy shanty about discipline.
3) Leave Her Johnny - A shanty about putting ashore or a foundered ship.

I've listed to this song SO MANY TIMES and today I am appreciating Adam's tom-tom drums. Magnificent.
Castanets. Frikkin castanets... dude is an alien.

Great, great reactions, please keep them coming.
Yes!! Please. Do a double reaction. In that order, Brother in arms then My Maria. (My Maria is on Austins YT channel)

Yes. 1000 times yes. Everyone pls like :) your jaw will hurt from hitting the floor (again - and again). Bring tissues.

I'm with you on the road trip with HF music, let's go
Another great reaction. Thanks
Sea Shanty Medley is a collection of songs from the days of Whaling was a common Sea captain job.
They did this during the pandemics time when they couldn't be together to record. So they did this from each of there homes.
This was one they did in their separate homes during quarantine and was put together.
A medley is a mashup of several songs, in this case... Several sea shanties from all over the World.
Love how even on lockdown they make great music.
Thank goddess for home free...
They are old songs that sailors in the Age of Sail sang during the drudgery of work onboard.
I agree about listening to them on a road trip. Try the "15 minutes of Tim Foust". Hysterical.
Every time I see this video, I laugh bc Tim and Austin are on a whole other level of commitment to the pirate look than the other guys.
Yes they have this on tic toc they have alot on tic toc and you can sing along with them
Just wait till you see the super funny side of these guys, the talent is always SERIOUSLY good 👍
Wellerman is an old sea shanty that was made famous again in the Pirates of Caribbean.
fun fact btw tim couldnt move at all cause he was standing in a old boat and the camera would fall if he did :D
Check out In the Blood , a John Mayer cover 😍
By the way all of them can play instruments. Adam Rupp can play trumpet. Tim and Austin can play piano. Adam Chance and I believe Rob can play guitar
They did such a good job with this and others during quarantine
Sea Shantys are a sea faring old genre of very cool music.
I love Rob's deeper tone in this one.
Im meeting all of them tuesday night at the ryman!!! You sir are halarious ! Love your humor and your reactions!!
Oooh good, my favorite group!!! Love Home Free and subbing in hopes of more! For funny try Butts Remix and for Christmas season, Full of Cheer are both pretty funny
Did you hear Adam's castanets by chance. Truly enjoyed watching your reaction.
This was done during COVID-19, in their respective homes. You're hilarious!
Wait until you hear their original music! These guys are beyond amazing!
I should be embarrassed to say it, but when my ears aren't being filled with Home Free I feel like what I imagine an alcoholic must feel like. I don't just want to hear them, I need to hear them. Anyone else?
This was done during quarantine, and this is a medley of old sea shanties. They had fun getting into character for the sailor/pirate themed songs.
You have to check out seven bridges road cover by them. It's awesome
Sea shanties are songs used in shipping to keep workers hauling in time. If the worked in time it was always easier.
