    Great job in explaining the difference between the different manufactures. It helps greatly in determining what are the features between models that maybe important when determining which model may be best for your layout. Great review.

    Enjoyed your review, I purchased the Leadenhall back in December. What an excellent running locomotive, so good that I purchased another one I choose BR Carisbrooke. I will use the BR for freight and the LB&SCR for the passenger cars once Hattons releases them. I did have two issues, the Leadenhall arrived with one of the buffer's broken I repaired with glue but still has fallen off on occasions, also the front coupler was not attached. On the BR the buffer tip was loose in the packaging but easily pushed on and the three felt protection pads was not in the packaging of the BR which had the locomotive moving about a little. The LB&SCR had the pads and the unit was sitting in is packaging very tightly. All in all, great locomotives for the money.

    I love Terriers, I have two of the new Hornby's and I too had the same experience with the pickups on one, leading to some tweezer and long nose pliers work, but both run quiet and smooth. I have four of the older Hornby ones---- did I mention I love Terriers and one of the old Dapols. The Dapol one is the real only honker of the bunch. A great review Sam, the comparisons between the two was an excellent review tool.

    I've also got the Leadenhall terrier too and I do think she's little powerhouse. She had no problem towing 6 teak coaches (normally pulled by an A4 Peregrine or P2 Cock O' The North) at low and high speed. I do have fond childhood memories of terrier "Stepney" at Blue Bell railway.

    I have the Hornby Brighton terrier in the same livery. Had not noticed the holes in the front of the cabin, they are so tiny. I have DCC in my loco and it manages a very nice crawl indeed. The thin stalks behind the steam (or sand?) dome bend very easily, so handle with care. A very nice and, if I may say so, CUTE model for the price. I am completely happy with mine. Thank you for the review! 😊 👍

    Hi Sam. The Improved Green livery is my favourite of all the ones on offer. I have the Dapol N gauge model "Brighton Works" in the same livery. I have yet to run it as my layout is still under construction. Unfortunately, the smaller gauge precludes it from coming with DCC/sound fitted; if I were to try and DIY it, it would invalidate the warranty. I realise you 'measure' the tractive effort of locos using your Newton meter, but I think it would also be interesting to correlate the power in terms of loco weight. Didn't look especially fast.

    Sam, I bought a Dapol/Rails version and it had all the problems you highlighted in your review. Replaced with the Hornby version ('Chapeau' to Rails - no quibble return from their side). The little Hornby version is simpler but still works well and v. cute. From a couple of feet away the detail points are quite OK. No contest: the Rails version was a crime against humanity. This is a (very well priced) option.

    The cab with the holes on the lighter colour Hornby Terriers is the main reason I didn't choose their Terrier in this colour first time round. On the darker colour ones the holes aren't as noticeable as I have Hornby one in the K&ESR blue livery. I may get another one but in Southern livery

    We have equal taste in steam engines, shunters, DMUs and HSTs alike. By the way, I decided to go engine-spotting. I saw the ghostly grey P Class Tank Engine near Toy Town, the J70 Tram Engine on the turntable siding, a fourth Terrier Tank Engine, Whitechapel, hiding behind the pub and the odd one out, which is the 0-4-0 Pug. The theme was the 0-6-0 wheel arrangement, you did this before, so the oddity is the 0-4-0 Pug. Just goes to show how much you and I love steam engines.

    One explanation of Stroudley's improved engine green was that it was his nineteenth century way of saying an improvement on engine green. Perhaps wearing properties of the paint pigment improved too over the previous green.

    Enjoyed the review, also watched the alternative Dapol one that kept derailing. I've just ordered the Hornby one because reliability and consistent performance is main criteria. I'm running on 1st radius so I need good runners to get round them, which this one will probably be fine. Keep doing reviews as I always look to you for advice as I'm a newbie to the game. Cheers, Rick the Bulldog

  • @OlivierGabin
    @OlivierGabin 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Agreed with you : I have one in Southern Green, it's a nice and efficient branchline engine. Less details ? I don't care because it means less GBP, that's a good deal for me. Especially when the finish is OK, and the mechanism on the born-to-run side. I also agree on the 3 poles motors, a 5 poles would have been better, and a flywheel would have been a good idea.
    If you want a Terrier, it is THE model to buy for me, period. Hornby have everything right here on the basics, you've got really what you paid for.

  • @jeffreymcneal1920
    @jeffreymcneal1920 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I got one of these, pre-Sam's Review, and got lucky. Runs very nice and pulls whatever I put up to it. Nice that gear ratio is on the high side giving a pleasing low speed performance. As to the level of detail, well I tend to compare it to what I grew up with, like Triang and the old classic Hornby O-4-O, so it is rather smashing compared to that. I have to pay a huge penalty on shipping, so for me it's definitely been worth it.

    I have a theorie on why hornby’s models are most plastic
    Its to keep down cost and make it easy to make the models because if they are made from metal the price will go up (look at the new a3’s compared to the a3’s from 10 years ago)

    First time I've bought a train from Amazon Prime! I only paid £42 for mine (I'm pretending my £35 Amazon voucher wasn't real money).

    Stroudley's biographer apparently disputes the engineer's colourblindness. I heard something along the lines of that the reason the livery is called "Improved engine green" is because Stroudley phrased it as an "Improvement on green" because the LBSCR painted their locos green before Stroudley came along. Interestingly, no notes in the board meetings on both the Highland Railway, which he was CME of, or the LBSCR can confirm this. Curious indeed!

    You know, that reminds me of the time I did a hypothermia train display for Foundation Degree graphics about the evolution of steam trains and Stepney was one of them. Glad that a healthy 20% of these guys are still around.

    Your review is spot on Sam. A lovely smooth little tank engine... at a decent price tag and better than the first batch. Hope Hornby improves the new large Prairie at the next production run too. There seems to be a positive change.....Thanks for sharing & greetings, Filip

    Sam, I've seen many historic photographs of British steam locomotives supplied to Commonwealth countries. Most of them were equipped with enormous light fixtures on front and/or back. Why Hornby's models are lampless?

    Took your time doing this review, considering you mentioned you'd bought it late last year. £69.99? Nice.
    I have the BRITISH RAILWAYS malachite green A1X with IoW extended bunker, W13 Carisbrooke (formerly 77 Wonersh, then 677, B677, W3 Carisbrooke, W13, then 32677), bought it 2nd hand DCC fitted for £50 posted, absolute bargain, is a lovely loco but has a large glue mark on the front buffer beam. It happily ran with 3 super detailed maunsell coaches for ages, so much more powerful than my older hornby A1 class 650 Whitechapel in Improved Engine Green.
    I set the DCC address to 3013 because it is number 13 on the side and its a southern region loco. I'd get confused if i numbered it 0077, 0677, or 2677 because that'd not match what it shows on the side, but I couldn't have it as 0013 because my Wabtec sentinel is number H013 and was DCC fitted first so claimed the 0013 number first.
    It's sad that 10 terriers were preserved, yet for NER locos only 13 (1 j21, 1 j27, 1 j72, 1 q6, 1 q7, the x1 Aerolite, the long boiler 1001, the 2-4-0 901, 1 d17/1, 2 y7s, 1 e5) from the entire company were preserved. I'd love a model of the x1 tbh. Atm I have 9 j72s (although two are identical, and 2 are the LNER and BR versions of the same loco) plus a q6, and I'm looking forward to the oxford j26/j27s as well as the bachmann/tmc g5s.
    Have to say, this loco in the review is my favourite shade of green, ever. :p
    Slowly getting there with youtube catchup.

    I have got R3813 IOW version "Cowes". It has pipework going into those holes! Comparing it to R2443 "Ventnor", R3813 is the more accurate model, but it doesn't run as well across points. I have improved this situation a bit by adjusting the pickups so they press harder against the wheels. You might be able to this with that Rails offering. Comparing the old Hornby Terrier to the new one, the old one is somewhat noisy, but runs quite well. If you compare the old and new Terriers side by side, the new one is dimensionally much more accurate, but the old one is still quite pleasing. You might to join the IOW pre-1966 steam Facebook group. Lots of good photos and information for Terrier aficionados! Thanks for uploading.

    I do like the Hornby Terriers, they may not be as detailed as the Dapol/Rails one but I do feel like you get a lot for your money here. Funnily enough when I did my review of Stepney last year I made a similar comment about the front of the cab looking like it had been shot at too 😂
