    Great job in explaining the difference between the different manufactures. It helps greatly in determining what are the features between models that maybe important when determining which model may be best for your layout. Great review.

    Sam, I bought a Dapol/Rails version and it had all the problems you highlighted in your review. Replaced with the Hornby version ('Chapeau' to Rails - no quibble return from their side). The little Hornby version is simpler but still works well and v. cute. From a couple of feet away the detail points are quite OK. No contest: the Rails version was a crime against humanity. This is a (very well priced) option.

    Finally got myself a Terrier. Loving my Hornby one. Mine is preserved member "Brighton" in the same beautiful (and not green 😛🤫😉) livery.

  • @FlyingScott
    @FlyingScott 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Stroudley's biographer apparently disputes the engineer's colourblindness. I heard something along the lines of that the reason the livery is called "Improved engine green" is because Stroudley phrased it as an "Improvement on green" because the LBSCR painted their locos green before Stroudley came along. Interestingly, no notes in the board meetings on both the Highland Railway, which he was CME of, or the LBSCR can confirm this. Curious indeed!

    The cab with the holes on the lighter colour Hornby Terriers is the main reason I didn't choose their Terrier in this colour first time round. On the darker colour ones the holes aren't as noticeable as I have Hornby one in the K&ESR blue livery. I may get another one but in Southern livery

    I have a theorie on why hornby’s models are most plastic
    Its to keep down cost and make it easy to make the models because if they are made from metal the price will go up (look at the new a3’s compared to the a3’s from 10 years ago)

    Agreed with you : I have one in Southern Green, it's a nice and efficient branchline engine. Less details ? I don't care because it means less GBP, that's a good deal for me. Especially when the finish is OK, and the mechanism on the born-to-run side. I also agree on the 3 poles motors, a 5 poles would have been better, and a flywheel would have been a good idea.
    If you want a Terrier, it is THE model to buy for me, period. Hornby have everything right here on the basics, you've got really what you paid for.

    Took your time doing this review, considering you mentioned you'd bought it late last year. £69.99? Nice.
    I have the BRITISH RAILWAYS malachite green A1X with IoW extended bunker, W13 Carisbrooke (formerly 77 Wonersh, then 677, B677, W3 Carisbrooke, W13, then 32677), bought it 2nd hand DCC fitted for £50 posted, absolute bargain, is a lovely loco but has a large glue mark on the front buffer beam. It happily ran with 3 super detailed maunsell coaches for ages, so much more powerful than my older hornby A1 class 650 Whitechapel in Improved Engine Green.
    I set the DCC address to 3013 because it is number 13 on the side and its a southern region loco. I'd get confused if i numbered it 0077, 0677, or 2677 because that'd not match what it shows on the side, but I couldn't have it as 0013 because my Wabtec sentinel is number H013 and was DCC fitted first so claimed the 0013 number first.
    It's sad that 10 terriers were preserved, yet for NER locos only 13 (1 j21, 1 j27, 1 j72, 1 q6, 1 q7, the x1 Aerolite, the long boiler 1001, the 2-4-0 901, 1 d17/1, 2 y7s, 1 e5) from the entire company were preserved. I'd love a model of the x1 tbh. Atm I have 9 j72s (although two are identical, and 2 are the LNER and BR versions of the same loco) plus a q6, and I'm looking forward to the oxford j26/j27s as well as the bachmann/tmc g5s.
    Have to say, this loco in the review is my favourite shade of green, ever. :p
    Slowly getting there with youtube catchup.

    What a sweet looking loco. Looking at it made me wonder about something totally unrelated. As per your test of 0-4-0 vs sharp curves, and given the rise in interest in tiny or compact layouts, what about a test to see which modern locos will reliably negotiate 1st radius curves? No point in using vintage locos as I assume they all will because 1st radius was normal back then. Cheers 😊👍

    Excellent review of the Hornby LBSCR Terrier Sam 👍👍 I have to say that the Hornby one is better with the quality plus value, but comparing to the Dapol version it has a little bit of of got detailed like the cab, chimney & boiler, but not so great with the Dapol version keep on derailing as well the non straight running plate.

Just wondering, I know these are newer tooling than my Thomas the Tank engine Stepney, do these newer ones have improved reliability in regards to the Motors? • @twonkfieldrailways4110
    @twonkfieldrailways4110 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    No competition im actually so glad that hornby took the risk and made these when I saw rails was doing the terrier I was annoyed because I wanted an affordable one 110 is too much for a tiny tank engine. So hornby already had my vote when it was announced and it most definitely still does i can fit a light into my terrier and it'll still have cost less than 100 and the detail may be higher on the rails one but at least the hornby ones aren't wonky so the features that make the rails one 'pedigree' still don'tjustifythe cost. I guess its like a real pedigree dog looks nice on the outside but seriously unhealthy on the inside. Great video though

    Thanks Sam another great review, so, I asked myself the obvious question, why isn't improved engine green not green? There's a few theories about but here's just one I liked, "....there is a theory for Improved Engine Green which is that because, on Stroudley's arrival at LBSCR, passenger locomotives were a dark Brunswick green, and before that had been a dark bottle green, the name Improved Engine Green was intentionally sardonic: Stroudley was just fed up with endless shades of green" end quote,. ...Drew

    Hornby made massive improvements on these last year when they brought out the Collector Club edition of Brighton Works.
    It corrected a lot of the issues people had with the Terriers, and hopefully will be the standard of Hornby's upcoming releases later in the year.
    Even so, I'd still take these over the Dapol/Rails ones any day of the week, as I'd rather have one that works for £80 instead of paying £130 for something that badly put together.
    I do need to ask though, how do you rate the performance? Because while this got 4 stars, I remembered you gave the Dapol/Rails one 3.5 despite it repeatedly de-railing.

    If you made a museam quality reproduction, exactly to scale, of any loco you couldn't run it. In any case 00 guage locos are out of scale with regard to the rail guage, they are oversize as is the rail profile but leaving that aside the wheel flanges themselves if made to scale would cause derailments with a glance
    It is compromise then, if you want to run a loco on a layout what matters then is that it runs well and that it isn't too fragile. As we know many highly detailed models drop detail parts off with a puff of wind, indeed Sam how many times have you opened a new model only to find it has lost detail parts before you even got it out of the box?
    This Terrier, I have Brighton, is very robust and runs exceptionally well and I would say almost state of the art for a model locomotive that is intended to be used rather than displayed in a case and any compromises of fine detail and accuracy made to acheive this are not of consequence

    Hey Sam,I have a question,I have watched your Hornby vs Bachmann video and is still dont know wich brand I should start my own model railway with,I'm definitely getting some bachmann Thomas the Tank Engine locomotives,but I just don't know what to get after that,because I do want some real engines,so,what should I start with,Hornby or Bahcmann? Please let me know.
