My picks, the 6 inch american, hancock longbell, Pennsylvania, L&N passenger, and 6 inch crosby, but my absolute favorite 3 chime thats not in here is the Southern 3 chime short bell.
LtHawk77 Although you know what, I think #5 got that whistle in 1982, because in the picture of it at Port Of Grays Harbor, I think that might be a Baldwin 3-chime because if you compare the photo of her at Port of Grays Harbor, and Mt. Rainier Scenic, they look so different. The one at MRSR is pointy but the one at Port Of Grays doesn't look pointy.
dcoursey82 I think you might be correct, because Boston and Maine, Boston and Albany, Bangor and Aroostook, New Haven and I believe Western Maryland used them because of the whistle designs that I saw in old photos. I saw a photo of a Western Maryland 2-8-0 back in the 1920's wearing a 6 inch 3 chime brass whistle. It was an Ashton 6 inch 3 chime. Matter of fact, the whistle that was on Strasburg #31 wasn't a Crosby or a Buckeye 3 chime (Buckeye only had 4 inch 3 chimes). It was definitely an Ashton.
My bad, PRR mostly used Altoona, Boston and Maine, Boston and Albany, New Haven, Bangor and Aroostook, and I think Delaware and Hudson were the ones that used Ashton.
Probably. Sounds vigorous enough to match the sound. Though, a little side note, I feel like they should have given Toby the 3 chime whistle used by the LNER A4 Pacifics (Spencer).
Almost sounds like the one they put on Mount Rainier Scenic #5 from Ashton Valve Company, which was also used on Boston and Maine, Delaware Railroad, Valley Railroad, New Haven, Long Island, and Boston and Albany, from the information that I picked up from a Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania volunteer. #5 at Mount Rainier originally had a logging 5-chime whistle from looking at some really old pictures while it was in service. It didn't get the 3-chime until someone donated it from a retired east coast steamer from the railroads I mentioned. Pennsylvania usually built their own whistles at Altoona Valve, but they also adopted Banshee and Ashton.
can someone explain why the whistles on 844/4014 dont sound like this anymore? (anymore as meaning the tone here is so much better and matches the sound from 844 in the early 90''s) the hancock 3 is my favorite whistle when it sounds like THIS, not what 844 and 4014 is using right now apparently. the sound here almost has a bagpipe-drone harmony it's intense
I don’t know but when they are blown from the super heater header like I believe they are set up now, they don’t sound as rich. They’re very dry sounding. 611’s doesn’t sound good anymore either partially because the whistle on it isn’t quite as good and because they moved where it was located on the boiler at some point. Early 80’s the whistle on the 611 was the best.
844 had its whistle replaced in 2010, it was pretty wore out. There’s actually a video of an early 2010 run where you can clearly hear the whistle as it “gave up”. It was replaced with another Hancock 3 chime. With the current restoration plans for the 3985 I wouldn’t be surprised if that whistle (taken from 4004) also ends up being replaced too with another 3 chime.
@@rhondanugent7648 No it’s used on a Durango and Silverton locomotive (I could guess it’s #473, because the sound just rings the bell, no pun intended) or it might be #476 or some other engine on that line…
That 5 inch Crosby sounded just like Tweetsie Railroad 12’s Baldwin 3 chime.
"It's the best! It's loud and BOOMING. Everyone will hear you coming."
*yawn* Clearly, James has never heard of a 6 chime whistle, which is by far louder and more BOOMING. That’ll send them hobos packing for sure! 😈
My picks, the 6 inch american, hancock longbell, Pennsylvania, L&N passenger, and 6 inch crosby, but my absolute favorite 3 chime thats not in here is the Southern 3 chime short bell.
I Like the Hancock long bell whistle, because it's the standard whistle on UP 844, 3985, 4014, SP 4449, SP&S 700, N&W 611, WM 734 & Soon C&O (WM) 1309
Hancock long bell is my favorite out of the bunch. It's the signal of absolute power, while also being one of the most somber sounds out there.
All majestic.
That Powell is my dad’s whistle and him blowing it on CSSR Shay #11. Thank you for sharing that’s my favorite whistle!
Love that Powell 6 inch! Sounds so graceful
The Louisville & Nashville (passenger) whistle is my favorite.
good job on your video! I like all of those chimes!
4:01 the wail of a steam three chime whistle that was my favorite
The Powell 6 inch reminded me of Nevada Northern 40.
4:54 that whistle came from Dollywood a theme park in Tennessee.
That Powell 6 inch sounds like no.40 from the Nevada Northern.
At 0:42, that American 6 inch 3 chime sounded a bit like 4501’s Princeton 3 chime on minimal steam pressure.
I love the Crosby 6 inch 3 chime. Sounds like an angel............in a way.
Vincent Berkan all steam whistles sound like angels 👍
My absolute favorite, without a doubt, is the Crosby 3 chime. It sounds pretty much identical to the East Broad Top Railroad 3 chime whistles.
My all time favorite is the powell 3 chime
followed by the Ashton 3 chime used on the Pensy K4s
LtHawk77 Ashton valve was also used on the M1
LtHawk77 Although you know what, I think #5 got that whistle in 1982, because in the picture of it at Port Of Grays Harbor, I think that might be a Baldwin 3-chime because if you compare the photo of her at Port of Grays Harbor, and Mt. +LtHawk77 Ashton's sound very similar, but were never actually used on PRR engines. The K4's and other engines used PRR 3 chimes only.

Hands down, my favorite 3 chime whistle is definitely the Crosby 6 inch 3 chime!
6:27 reminds me of Duluth Missabe and Iron Range 227 Yellowstone
4:32 my favorite
My bad, PRR mostly used Altoona, Boston and Maine, Boston and Albany, New Haven, Bangor and Aroostook, and I think Delaware and Hudson were the ones that used Ashton.
the hancock is the best of the best
The whistle at 4:08 sounds like a MD PRR 3 Chime
It is not though. It's made by Brian Davies.
Is it just me, or does the whistle at 7:10 the exact one used in a CGI Thomas and Friends episode (Toby's New Whistle)? I just noticed this...
Probably. Sounds vigorous enough to match the sound. Though, a little side note, I feel like they should have given Toby the 3 chime whistle used by the LNER A4 Pacifics (Spencer).
No, not really
No, the one used in that episode was SRs 4501, which is slightly higher
@@_blitzreplayz_5880 the more perfect Fit is the Crosby 6 inch.
5:24 I was trying to find like that one, but I can’t find it.
Hector’s Productions they’re not very common.
5:21 *ITS A BIG BOY!*
The Pennsy sounds like Mt. Rainier Scenic #5
Sounds beautiful! To me it sounds like both a LIRR G5, PRR K4 & M1!
+brian falzon But the whistle that was on #5 sounds a little more like Boston and Maine's engines
The L&N Freight is probably my favorite.
favorite is the Pennsy 3 chime

The Powell 6 inch is something that you don’t want to hear at night in the woods alone
It’s a very spooky whistle for sure
2:04 🤤🤤🤤 it's so cool
Is it just me or does the Crosby 6 inch sound just like the whistle on the circus train in Madagascar 3?
You’re right, it kinda does sound like the circus train from Madagascar 3.
yep nailed it at 5:21 Big Boy best original sound !

My bad D&RGW was Hancock.
The Crosby 5 inch is EBT 15’s right?
It’s actually Southern 154’s
there's also baldwin 3 chimes
+Brett SD railfanner Like Polson Logging #70's original 5 inch 3 chime
+Erich Diebold
or Tweetsie railroad's #12 locomotive
Or like Handy Dandy Railroad #9’s Baldwin whistle
Gotta stick whith my good ol' U S of A's!
what chime is that 2:02?
It’s a B&O 3 chime.

Isn't the american 3 chime actually called the lonergan 3 chime
No. I didn’t have a Lonergan recording at the time, but they’re somewhat similar.
The American is probably the Lonergan
Southwest Air Fanimations it’s an American. Lonergans sound better to me usually.
I don’t know the specifics of 10’s 3 chime whistle but it didn’t make it in this vid
Oh hey, just commenting on this video?
What about Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad #5's Ashton 6 inch 3 chime whistle
Erich Diebold what about it.
+JaiahHazelnutBrown That would be a great whistle to use on Three Chime Whistles Part 2. The whistle is currently on Hammond Lumber #17
The first whistle in the video is actually a lonergan
