What made the end of this arc even sadder for me was realizing that the opening song starts with Gojo slumped in his chair and the arc ends with him waking up in the chair as if he was having a sad dream about his past, but surrounded by his students to make him feel better.
In a way Geto didn’t really change. He was committed to protecting the weak. His shift was in whom he considered weak and worthy of protection. He wants to protect jujutsu sorcerers. He wants to prevent the deaths of high schoolers like Haibara and grade schoolers like those two girls. Gleefully clapping for the death of an innocent revealed to Geto that non-curse users are not worth dying for.
Fun Fact: If you listen closely, the sound of the shower water slowly transitions to the sound of "clapping". This also happens when it rained while Geto was talking to Yuki. He is really that bothered by the incident that every time it rains, he hears nonstop clapping. Like a veteran with fireworks.
An interesting thing to note is that Geto looks so much healthier and happier once he makes his decision to eliminate non-sorcerers. The indecision and turmoil had been eating him up ever since the incident, but him deciding to execute his plan gave him a new life of sorts, a purpose. Despite the fact that he chose to do something that would be incredibly difficult, would take years to accomplish and that is undeniably terrible, it's like he's never been more alive.
Hmm. Kinda like jujutsu in a way, the vibe of his new plan is negative much like cursed energy, and the means would be negative as well to form double negative energy to create his positive outcome. Maybe its a stretch but i just like how important emotions have value to both themes and character journeys
Now this is where Gojo's whole "noone should be allowed to take the joys of youth from young people" comes from. He regrets not noticing Geto's downfall..as Geto's joy of youth was being taken away by he constant missions alone. Like both Gojo and Geto were only 17 there.
It's sad, really. A lot of people were watching these five episodes, waiting for the eventual turn and snapping of Geto through some event. But it wasn't just one event. It was a combination of different things. What happened to Riko, the trauma Toji inflicted on him, his conversation with Yuki about non-sorcerers and what their existence means to the world, the premature death of Haibara due to the inaccuracies of their mission(and how teens are losing their lives without even knowing why thanks to the higher ups), Gojo being able to take care of all of the problems and what he offered to Geto about getting rid of all of the people even if they were innocent, and the straw that broke the camels back was seeing how two innocent girls were being treated all because of who they were. We saw the story of how Geto went from a sweet boy to the Geto we saw in JJK 0. Hater of all monkeys. It truly is a tragedy. So many bad things continued to stack up and no one saw how far Geto had sunk until it was too late.
But we can all agree this was typical BS anime writing and a barely believable character transition, no? It's impossible to go from "my life duty is to protect the weak" to "kill all non-sorcerers". Becoming disillusioned, dropping out of jujutsu high and doing your own thing, SURE. But killing 99,9% of the earths population, huuuuh?
@@o-henryIf you want to draw a parallel, that's exactly what happens to soldiers who come back from countries at war and have been indoctrinated by another ideology. The horrors they've seen make them question their values and whether they're fighting for the right side, and that's how they become terrorists. So I think the character is quite believable imo
@@stanislasd.4780 Give me a single example for a domestic terrorist with a disillusioned military background. Unbelievably rare, if any cases exist. If anything, your example proves my point because BY FAR most such cases end in addiction, self-directed violence etc. Geto's change is an extremely big stretch. And also, him siding with the sorcerers as the "greater good" is highly dubious since there are far more scumbags among sorcerers than regular people I'd say.
@@o-henryAyman al-Zawahiri, Shamil Basayev, Mohamed Merah - these are all examples of terrorists who were heavily radicalized from their initial times as soldiers fighting for the opposition. Many members of the IRA used to be British soldiers. We also have countless examples of the opposite, military leaders or war heroes later becoming advocates for peace; Smedley Butler, Ashoka the Great, even John Newton went from being a slave trader to an abolitionist. Such radical changes in belief don't happen all at once, they're gradual, and often the result of layers of trauma or having to bear witness to terrible happenstance. It's certainly not impossible, and not a phenomenon merely limited to Anime.
@@o-henrythis is far more believable than just, one event led him to the idea of mass genocide, what are you on? A year or 2 have passed since the star plasma incident occured, and it's still on his mind, his entire world view was questioned with that incident, and question he did, by himself, then along the lines he found it infuriatingly disgusting since the nature of his techniques and how much it sank to him that he'd be doing this to ungrateful people who are blissfully unaware their entire being causes, and when he was at the breaching point when he literally had 0 reasons to save them, Yuki went in gave a solution and insight on the problem, a solution he wasn't particularly looking for, but then Haibara died, cementing the idea of it's not just him risking his life and sanity on the line, that all of them are dying for what? Obviously it's not 1 to 1 but think of it as a school sh**ter, was most likely a great person, then got fucked all over in almost every turn, then they were falling, so if they were falling, why not burn it all to the ground, a place that hurt them.
I also do feel like Geto was absolutely a product of the Jujutsu Society system failing. Gojo’s awakening put him on a higher level where he was taking on all the most dangerous missions alone, and Shoko’s skillset lies elsewhere, so there wasn’t really anyone around to notice what Geto was going through and to pull him back from the edge. Yuki told him that he wasn’t yet “lost,” he still had the ability to chose, but after that conversation he had no one.
A little nice detail that shows Geto's turmoil was how the shower/rain sound like the clapping by the cultists. And yeah, Yuki unintentionally created basically JJK Hitler, She was treating their conversation as an academic discussion while Geto was treating it more as a philosophical one.
I always thought it was adorable how Gojo and Geto became father figures to kid's they took in around the same time. It would've been funny if they got together every so often so that they could play with each other.
What I really loved noticing about this anime and manga is that there are no mentally stable sorcerers. It's like the usage of negative energy warps their brain. This is also mirrored in their curse technique. Gojo with limitless is untouchable unfazed by reality everyone is attracted to him (not necessarily physically) but no one can stand by his side no matter how hard he tries.
I think something important to mention about Geto using the term "monkeys" is that he specifically adopts a Buddhist persona when starting his religious group. Monkey's in Buddhism are seen as "lower level" of humans who are foolish, selfish, and weak. They are supposed to be redeemed and many stories in Buddhism involve monkeys going through redemption and finding salvation. I know many people in Western communities look at it with a racial lens which makes a lot of sense considering western history, but the way Geto is using it is specifically in a religious context, as to him non sorcerers are an "unawakened" and "unrealized" version compared to Jujutsu sorcerers. I'm not a specialist in Buddhism so I might have some things a little wrong but I wanted to point it out since it's not something I see people talking about a lot and thought you would like to know!
The final trigger was when a good sorcerer (Haibara) died, Amanai's death was insignificant cause there's already a replacement (making him feel like they're wasting their lives for nothing) and then on his final mission where he was supposed to deal w his hometown curse, non jujutsu people/towns folk were yapping and blaming the 2 girls for causing the chaos in that town when the curses was clearly coming from the townsfolk so he just snapped and decided to commit mass murder😅 cause non jujutusu tend to judge jujutsu sorcerers as weird or different yet have all the demands. Like why waste time protecting trash😅 Ofcourse not every1 is like that but you can see thst Geto was struggling on his own for a yr and Gojo wasnt there to notice it since theyve gone thru missions alone after the Amanai incident.
This was such a short but beautiful arc. Really made sense of how Geto spiraled downward to becoming a villain. It’s crazy to think how much of an impact on the timeline this arc has on the whole series.
Something someone pointed out was that when Gojo remembers the "are you the strongest because you are Satoru" scene, it's all black and there's only him and Geto, with no color. But now that we get it from Getos POV, there's color, there's detail to the non sorcerers. Gojo never saw the non sorcerers, there was only Geto and his job to kill or capture him, one that he ignored, even when he's meant to protect the normal humans. But then Geto, who sees them as monkeys, sees them as real entities, sees the world as a whole, even sees color in the world again, and wants to one day kill them. Also the outfit that Geto starts to wear after this is called a Gojo (I forget the second part of the name of it. I think kesai?)
To be honest, even though geto's solution/idea was messed up, I can't really blame him for coming to that solution either. Especially if they created curses like mahito, Jogo etc. Its one of those "it's the best solution (kinda) to do even if you don't want to" type dilemma
Not really, given that humanity doesn't create these curses willingly. He basically came to the same conclusion Eren did, only that Eren knew full well that he was committing an atrocity while Geto thinks of himself as a savior
Are you the Strongest because you're Satoru Gojo? = Are you strong because you're you? Are you Satoru Gojo because you're the Strongest? = Are you, you, as a result of your strength? It's a question of what defines who Gojo is. Does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man? Geto's answer to that question is, the man makes the suit, Gojo is the strongest because he's Gojo, he defines his strength, his strength doesn't define him. So I will define myself as well. I may not be the strongest right now, but I will not let that lack of strength define who I am and stop me from pursuing this path I've chosen to walk.
It’s not all that subtle but I still love the symbolism of how physically far away Gojo was from Geto in that beginning bit. Prior to these events, Gojo and Geto were “the strongest” together. After, Gojo was alone at the top and Geto was alone left behind.
I find it interesting that a lot of people, most of whom I've seen being Geto fans, point the finger to Yuki as someone who bears a lot of blame in Geto's turn to darkness, even moreso than Geto in most cases. I've found it ridiculous, not just because it wasn't Yuki who proposed Geto to kill non-sorcerers, but rather she was answering a question about if it would work from Geto himself, but also because it erases most of Geto's agency and the fact that at the end of the day, he decided to do what he did, not anyone else. Yuki did kind of choose the wrong time and person to have that discussion with, but coddling Geto like his trauma excuses his actions and isn't the reason for his decisions is something I've seen *a lot* of Geto fans do. He's a tragic character and his downfall isn't only on him, but his decisions and his actions after the incident *are* on him.
They just looking someone to blame with. But ain't anyone just looking for something to goes on living when a person has something dark on with his mind? Yuki was just happened to be the person who know the answer to his questions.
People really like to do that, and selectively too. They always wanna put the blame on ONE person, and often times not the person that actually made the decision. If you watch Hazbin Hotel, people loooooove to do this with Angel Dust, pinning all the blame for his situation on Valentino, taking away Angel's agency in the decision he made himself, just because the decision screwed him over big time, and his boss is a dick. Being in a really shitty situation sucks, but you can't just pretend he didn't put HIMSELF there. That's what makes striving to dig himself out of that hole so admirable. This applies to lots of situations, both in fiction and real life. At the end of the day, people are responsible for their own actions and saying "Well it's someone else's fault cause they said this" just diverts attention away from the actual root cause, allowing it to fester and screw someone else over later, cause nobody ever bothers to fix it cause why fix the hard problem when you can tweet about the easy problem?
It's because when people get put into the hidden inventory/premature death arcs after jjk0 they look for a "switch" in what makes Geto into the one we see in the movie not realising that the 5 episodes are showing you a slow decline in how he got there. It wasn't just that Riko was killed by Toji or that Gojo asked him if they could kill all the star plasma followers or even just having to eat curse spirits over and over again. It was all of them grouped together with the loss of one of his comrades during that time and then Yuki "offering" a solution to the end of the "marathon". She thought she was just bumping ideas off of a fellow sorcerer she had no clue what state his psyche was in. I doubt she realised going "well yeah technically you could kill all humans but nobody is crazy enough to do that right?" would actually lead to him doing exactly that.
it's definitely his fault, he chose this path, but he was heavily influenced by other characters and the shitty society they reside in. I think a lot of people find his character relatable, whether they want to admit it or not. We see certain groups/people be self-destructive and be in rough life positions all the time irl, and it's hard to always want to save or sympathize when you see so much of it, so many people end up having the same thoughts all around the world, and that's how prejudice begins. I think Jpn people probably relate a little more to his character than say, western country's people do but hey, not gonna speak any further on that lol. Same reason Naoya tops their JJK character popularity polls (which ik is a joke btw).
When I watched this through a 2nd time I realized how similar in personality Yuji and Haibara are and it made me appreciate Nanami mentoring Yuji a lot more.
I've been waiting for your reaction to this episode for such a long time! I really loved both of your analysis of what happened with Geto. I find him to be one of the most compelling characters in the whole series to be honest- just the symbolism of him literally having to digest the filth of the world. Him and Gojo are opposites in that way, where Gojo's technique allows him to push everything away and shut everything out while Geto's technique requires him to draw everything in and absorb it and I feel like it's a direct representation of what happened here in how they processed their trauma. But also yeah, no, Jujutsu Society 100% contributed to the spiral. We've seen in season one and this season how they send sorcerers on missions that they know are above their level, and how they expect people to move on from the death of those close to them with no help and no mourning. There's also the whole side point of both of Geto's parents being nonsorcerers which must have been hard to deal with. Did his parents just think he was crazy? How long did he live before he was discovered and brought to Jujutsu High?
When Geto was referring to exterminating non-sorcerers Yuki was aware of what he meant by exterminate she's just very openminded and so she didn't feel the need to immediately rebuke the statement like many others would, invertedly leading Geto down a murderous path
Geto 100% wouldn't have turned out this way if the "jujutsu system" was better, Gojo is definitely right to want to change things. Think about some examples, Geto's friend wouldn't have died if they handled these "missions" better. Those 2 kids Geto saved wouldn't have even been in that position if their system educated rural people on how to handle people like them, like yes it was humans being awful, but it stems from ignorance. Hell, the whole star plasma thing wouldn't have even happened if toji didn't become this bounty hunter who dgaf, and he only became that way because he was abused by his own clan because they're prejudiced and elitist. So 100% if the whole society was better, none of these people would've gone down these roads. I like how the writer made it very clear the cause-and-effect relationships with society and the characters. Early JJK is peak-ly written. Also, like how you guys actually understand and figure out all the info and subtext to scenes, even on ones where it's just about the power system or someone's specific powers. Shows you're actually paying attention lol.
@@farsous10 they don't gotta tell them sorcerers exist. All they'd have to do is make up some excuse why these people are special and should be treated well. They could literally say anything and if they back it with the right words and gov approval, they'll believe it, as we see many times irl.

We’ve seen it many times in different media, mutants for example, or in black clover. Humans knowing there’s different types of humans that have abilities would just create fear because they’ll see themselves as inferior since they don’t have powers, then they’ll turn on them because of it, and there’s significantly so so much more regular humans than there are sorcerers, it’s almost impossible to fight back unless gojo just steps in and says stop but he wouldn’t want to kill then of course

I don’t think y’all gave todo’s mentor enough credit lmao. She definitely understood him. She even says something about forcing non sorcerers into chaotic combat to fight each to either die or become sorcerers. Then says, “unfortunately I’m not crazy enough to do that”
Did anyone realise that the “Mr Sonoda” which Geto kills as he takes over that cult is the one who ordered the hit on Riko (plasma vessel). So he avenged her death, while nothing was done by Jujutsu Sorcerers or under the society protected by the Sorcerers. Also that was not a Russian doll cursed spirit that fell from the sky and crushed Mr Sonoda. It’s a Japanese Daruma dolls - seen as a symbol of perseverance and good luck, making them a popular gift of encouragement. Also a fun reference to a manga - Kami sama no Iutoori, where the plot starts with people in a classroom getting exploded in a sadistic game. Probably a reference to Squid game too. “Daruma fell over” is, is the Japanese version of a childhood game “Red Light Green Light” (Korean).
I’m glad you remember Gojo asking geto if he wanted to kill all those people. I think a theme Gege(author) likes to use with Gojo is he being so powerful that he’s essentially not human. Like when Gojo and Geto are talking in the gymnasium, Gojo says that he doesn’t care for the weak. Geto ends up the same way but they both wear those emotions differently from eachother. Meaning Gojo can handle thoughts like that(being so far removed from normal human thought). But then geto does it, he can’t handle that, it’s too above him. One last thing:There’s many occasions in the manga when Geto is represented as a Buddha like figure. The smile & the earlobes; or like in 0 when he was helping that mom and daughter. There’s also times where Gojo is Buddha like, like when he was fighting Toji. Which was actual enlightenment
The clapping haunting Geto and the sound design of like the rain and shower just pushing it. And then when he’s on that stage, theirs only one sound of clapping, and when he kills that guy the clapping stops. SO GOOD.
19:02 the two candles in the room cast two shadows on Geto, symbolizing the two parts of him. Then one candle burns out, leaving only one shadow, symbolizing that’s he’s decided who he wants to be. Such good cinematography!

It _would_ be a bit much if that’s all it took. But it wasn’t. It was also his colleagues dying, having to eating curses born from humans, the two little girls being hated by their village; all of it combined is what changed his mindset.
It's just sad because if you think about it, all of this goes back to Gojo, who had no say in the matter. As much as he relishes being the strongest, he didn't ask for that, he was just born that way. It was such a hard hit to Geto to see Gojo become more powerful than he is now and have the right to talk about killing non-sorcerers so casually, just because he was the strongest, whereas it took him seeing the Star Plasma Vessel and Haibara die to finally consider making his ideal a reality, even if he wasn't the strongest or if it would make him a criminal to his best friend. To Gojo, that meant that he made Geto what he is, simply because he was too strong for anyone, even his best friend, to ever come close to.
I believe he’s the strongest because he is Satoru Gojo, yeah the reputation and the powers that comes with the last name Gojo made him a strong man but the way he mastered those abilities and his fighting skills are possible because of his intellect. And I tell that this will be more clear when MAPPA animate more of the manga and you will see what I mean when you reach there.
If memory serves. The person Geto crushed on scene was the one who ordered the bounty on Riko. So he was clearly airing out a grudge. I also quite like how when Yuki talked about the ways Geto was feeling about hating regular people and wanting to save them, she pointed at the emergency exit and a dark corridor to show the former was the easy way out.
16:09 I think that who created that monster is actually Haibara, but the dub couldn't recreate the height of his unintentionally "advice". If you don't get what I'm saying, I just gonna say that being capable/willing to do and being capable to think about it is two completely different things
The unspoken part of "If I was Satoru Gojo, my plans would become reasonable possibilities" is "If you, Satoru Gojo, join me, this becomes a realistic possibility." If these two S Class Sorcerors team up this is not only possible, it may actually be almost easy.
It’s not that it would be easy if they teamed up, it’s that it would be easy if gojo was the one with the ideals. Gojo doesn’t need a group of sorcerers like what geto has to try and make his dream a reality, it’s like what mei mei said, gojo doesn’t need to team up with anybody if he decided to off everyone in the nation
“She’s not a bad person, I’m a great judge of character!” “You say that yet you’re sitting next to me…” Geto doesn’t think he’s a good person in the slightest yet Haibara sees the good in him.
Not only Yuki offered Geto a potential solution to his ideas and thoughts, is also the fact that haibara died, that as well affected Geto to choose what to do, and see that his friends and people close died because of the curses
please make sure to react to the blu-ray version for episode 17, the episode on tv release was severely rushed and unfinished due to a bad production schedule, the blue ray fixes alot of the problems and has like 3 minutes of amazing new animation, would be a shame if you dont experience the episode in the way its intended to be watched, love the videos keep it up :D
Quick note, the reason Gojo can afford to keep his Limitless up 24/7 all while frying and healing his brain constantly is due to the Six Eyes. They allow him to have an unparalleled level of efficiency with his cursed energy, to the point it gives off the illusion he has infinite Cursed Energy, even though he actually doesn't. He's just so efficient that he pretty much recovers CE faster than he can drain his reserves of the stuff.
Yuki was more so saying in her second point to teach everyone to control their cursed energy and be sorcerers to some extent. It wasn't that she was implying the eradication of normal humans at all but that's rather what geto took from it.
My intepretation of Geto's statement about Gojo being the strongest is that he's asking Gojo if his personality (arrogance/confidence) is what made him as strong as he is now, or if being the strongest made his personality (arrogant/confident). So basically, is being confident and believing you'll achieve something what makes you better and stronger to do just that. This comes from Gojo calling out Geto on doing something he can't possibly achieve, aka Geto is arrogant to think he has even a chance of achieving it. Geto is challenging the idea that he can't achieve it; If he is arrogant and keeps chipping away at it, he'll become strong enough to achieve it just like he believes Gojo has achieved his strength. This also aligns with the power system and Geto knowing how far Gojo has come.
"Are you the strongest because of the person you are, or are you the person you are because you are the strongest?" Being the strongest allows Gojo the freedom to be the person that he is. He didn't become the strongest because of how he chose to live his life. Gojo Satoru is Gojo Satoru because he was born with the Six Eyes and the Limitless technique. To this end, Geto isn't limited because of his desire to destroy all non-sorcerors. He is limited simply because he is. If he weren't, if he *were* the strongest, his goals wouldn't change that, and he would be able to achieve them.
Just a small correction, Yuki didn't misinterpret Geto when he said, "eliminate all non-sorcerers." She fully understood Geto was talking about killing them all, hence the response of "I'm not crazy enough to do that." Theoretically, it really isn't a bad practical solution to the problem created in this world. Yuki understands it's an option, It's just an incredibly immoral one.
I think the statement more so asks is gojo the strongest because of his hard work dedication and personal traits tactics etc or is it simply cuz he was naturally talented and destined to become the strongest by birth
21:28 its funny u mentioned the music its pretty hard to tell by just watching the show but the entire arc has been filled with music using a gojo leitmotif and if u listen to the official upload of this track it also has the gojo leitmotif but curiously the leitmotif has been taken out of the track just for this scene
I love the opposition between Gojo and Geto in this episode. Gojo became basically a god, but can't understand people's feelings. This "I dont care" side of Gojo aint just to make the character funny, it's his weakness. The man who see and understand everything can't understand people. On the other side Geto have and understand feelings, that's what cause him to be depressed and have criminal toughts. He even killed his family wich prove that it's not a selfish plan. Even when he's depressed when asked if he want something salty or sweet, he said "Gojo prefer sweet". They where both special sorcerer, but Gojo choose to be stronger and became distant from the world, while Geto choose to understand others and being crushed but Gojo's actions and the atrocity of the world
It’s deep to ask are you the strongest cause you were born as you. Or as you the strongest because you are you. It’s the idea of talent vs being gifted. Cause in many ways he his born gifted but there’s a level of you can take that for granted and another level where you exceed that level with effort
The most hurftull part of this episode is that Geto makes way too much sense for you to stop him. Like you know it's wrong, he knows it's wrong, but there is such a logical conclusion to his point that there's no way to fight his logic.

What made the end of this arc even sadder for me was realizing that the opening song starts with Gojo slumped in his chair and the arc ends with him waking up in the chair as if he was having a sad dream about his past, but surrounded by his students to make him feel better.

In a way Geto didn’t really change. He was committed to protecting the weak. His shift was in whom he considered weak and worthy of protection. He wants to protect jujutsu sorcerers. He wants to prevent the deaths of high schoolers like Haibara and grade schoolers like those two girls. Gleefully clapping for the death of an innocent revealed to Geto that non-curse users are not worth dying for.

Fun Fact: If you listen closely, the sound of the shower water slowly transitions to the sound of "clapping". This also happens when it rained while Geto was talking to Yuki. He is really that bothered by the incident that every time it rains, he hears nonstop clapping. Like a veteran with fireworks.
An interesting thing to note is that Geto looks so much healthier and happier once he makes his decision to eliminate non-sorcerers. The indecision and turmoil had been eating him up ever since the incident, but him deciding to execute his plan gave him a new life of sorts, a purpose. Despite the fact that he chose to do something that would be incredibly difficult, would take years to accomplish and that is undeniably terrible, it's like he's never been more alive.
Hmm. Kinda like jujutsu in a way, the vibe of his new plan is negative much like cursed energy, and the means would be negative as well to form double negative energy to create his positive outcome. Maybe its a stretch but i just like how important emotions have value to both themes and character journeys

It's sad, really. A lot of people were watching these five episodes, waiting for the eventual turn and snapping of Geto through some event. But it wasn't just one event. It was a combination of different things. What happened to Riko, the trauma Toji inflicted on him, his conversation with Yuki about non-sorcerers and what their existence means to the world, the premature death of Haibara due to the inaccuracies of their mission(and how teens are losing their lives without even knowing why thanks to the higher ups), Gojo being able to take care of all of the problems and what he offered to Geto about getting rid of all of the people even if they were innocent, and the straw that broke the camels back was seeing how two innocent girls were being treated all because of who they were. We saw the story of how Geto went from a sweet boy to the Geto we saw in JJK 0. Hater of all monkeys. It truly is a tragedy. So many bad things continued to stack up and no one saw how far Geto had sunk until it was too late.
But we can all agree this was typical BS anime writing and a barely believable character transition, no?
It's impossible to go from "my life duty is to protect the weak" to "kill all non-sorcerers". Becoming disillusioned, dropping out of jujutsu high and doing your own thing, SURE.
But killing 99,9% of the earths population, huuuuh?

The horrors they've seen make them question their values and whether they're fighting for the right side, and that's how they become terrorists. So I think the character is quite believable imo

If anything, your example proves my point because BY FAR most such cases end in addiction, self-directed violence etc. Geto's change is an extremely big stretch. And also, him siding with the sorcerers as the "greater good" is highly dubious since there are far more scumbags among sorcerers than regular people I'd say.

Many members of the IRA used to be British soldiers. We also have countless examples of the opposite, military leaders or war heroes later becoming advocates for peace; Smedley Butler, Ashoka the Great, even John Newton went from being a slave trader to an abolitionist. Such radical changes in belief don't happen all at once, they're gradual, and often the result of layers of trauma or having to bear witness to terrible happenstance. It's certainly not impossible, and not a phenomenon merely limited to Anime.

A year or 2 have passed since the star plasma incident occured, and it's still on his mind, his entire world view was questioned with that incident, and question he did, by himself, then along the lines he found it infuriatingly disgusting since the nature of his techniques and how much it sank to him that he'd be doing this to ungrateful people who are blissfully unaware their entire being causes, and when he was at the breaching point when he literally had 0 reasons to save them, Yuki went in gave a solution and insight on the problem, a solution he wasn't particularly looking for, but then Haibara died, cementing the idea of it's not just him risking his life and sanity on the line, that all of them are dying for what?
Obviously it's not 1 to 1 but think of it as a school sh**ter, was most likely a great person, then got fucked all over in almost every turn, then they were falling, so if they were falling, why not burn it all to the ground, a place that hurt them.
I also do feel like Geto was absolutely a product of the Jujutsu Society system failing. Gojo’s awakening put him on a higher level where he was taking on all the most dangerous missions alone, and Shoko’s skillset lies elsewhere, so there wasn’t really anyone around to notice what Geto was going through and to pull him back from the edge. Yuki told him that he wasn’t yet “lost,” he still had the ability to chose, but after that conversation he had no one.
Gojo was actually teared up when he opened his eyes as you can see the fuzzy images of the gang....
The backstory was a rollercoaster....
A little nice detail that shows Geto's turmoil was how the shower/rain sound like the clapping by the cultists. And yeah, Yuki unintentionally created basically JJK Hitler, She was treating their conversation as an academic discussion while Geto was treating it more as a philosophical one.
I always thought it was adorable how Gojo and Geto became father figures to kid's they took in around the same time. It would've been funny if they got together every so often so that they could play with each other.

What I really loved noticing about this anime and manga is that there are no mentally stable sorcerers. It's like the usage of negative energy warps their brain. This is also mirrored in their curse technique. Gojo with limitless is untouchable unfazed by reality everyone is attracted to him (not necessarily physically) but no one can stand by his side no matter how hard he tries.
I think something important to mention about Geto using the term "monkeys" is that he specifically adopts a Buddhist persona when starting his religious group. Monkey's in Buddhism are seen as "lower level" of humans who are foolish, selfish, and weak. They are supposed to be redeemed and many stories in Buddhism involve monkeys going through redemption and finding salvation. I know many people in Western communities look at it with a racial lens which makes a lot of sense considering western history, but the way Geto is using it is specifically in a religious context, as to him non sorcerers are an "unawakened" and "unrealized" version compared to Jujutsu sorcerers.
I'm not a specialist in Buddhism so I might have some things a little wrong but I wanted to point it out since it's not something I see people talking about a lot and thought you would like to know!

The final trigger was when a good sorcerer (Haibara) died, Amanai's death was insignificant cause there's already a replacement (making him feel like they're wasting their lives for nothing) and then on his final mission where he was supposed to deal w his hometown curse, non jujutsu people/towns folk were yapping and blaming the 2 girls for causing the chaos in that town when the curses was clearly coming from the townsfolk so he just snapped and decided to commit mass murder😅 cause non jujutusu tend to judge jujutsu sorcerers as weird or different yet have all the demands. Like why waste time protecting trash😅
Ofcourse not every1 is like that but you can see thst Geto was struggling on his own for a yr and Gojo wasnt there to notice it since theyve gone thru missions alone after the Amanai incident.
This was such a short but beautiful arc. Really made sense of how Geto spiraled downward to becoming a villain. It’s crazy to think how much of an impact on the timeline this arc has on the whole series.
Something someone pointed out was that when Gojo remembers the "are you the strongest because you are Satoru" scene, it's all black and there's only him and Geto, with no color. But now that we get it from Getos POV, there's color, there's detail to the non sorcerers.
Gojo never saw the non sorcerers, there was only Geto and his job to kill or capture him, one that he ignored, even when he's meant to protect the normal humans.
But then Geto, who sees them as monkeys, sees them as real entities, sees the world as a whole, even sees color in the world again, and wants to one day kill them.
Also the outfit that Geto starts to wear after this is called a Gojo (I forget the second part of the name of it. I think kesai?)

Not really, given that humanity doesn't create these curses willingly. He basically came to the same conclusion Eren did, only that Eren knew full well that he was committing an atrocity while Geto thinks of himself as a savior

It's a question of what defines who Gojo is. Does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?
Geto's answer to that question is, the man makes the suit, Gojo is the strongest because he's Gojo, he defines his strength, his strength doesn't define him. So I will define myself as well. I may not be the strongest right now, but I will not let that lack of strength define who I am and stop me from pursuing this path I've chosen to walk.

It’s not all that subtle but I still love the symbolism of how physically far away Gojo was from Geto in that beginning bit. Prior to these events, Gojo and Geto were “the strongest” together. After, Gojo was alone at the top and Geto was alone left behind.
I find it interesting that a lot of people, most of whom I've seen being Geto fans, point the finger to Yuki as someone who bears a lot of blame in Geto's turn to darkness, even moreso than Geto in most cases. I've found it ridiculous, not just because it wasn't Yuki who proposed Geto to kill non-sorcerers, but rather she was answering a question about if it would work from Geto himself, but also because it erases most of Geto's agency and the fact that at the end of the day, he decided to do what he did, not anyone else. Yuki did kind of choose the wrong time and person to have that discussion with, but coddling Geto like his trauma excuses his actions and isn't the reason for his decisions is something I've seen *a lot* of Geto fans do. He's a tragic character and his downfall isn't only on him, but his decisions and his actions after the incident *are* on him.
Real, having an Ah Ha moment while talking to someone doesn't make that other person guilty for how you put things together
They just looking someone to blame with. But ain't anyone just looking for something to goes on living when a person has something dark on with his mind? Yuki was just happened to be the person who know the answer to his questions.
People really like to do that, and selectively too. They always wanna put the blame on ONE person, and often times not the person that actually made the decision.
If you watch Hazbin Hotel, people loooooove to do this with Angel Dust, pinning all the blame for his situation on Valentino, taking away Angel's agency in the decision he made himself, just because the decision screwed him over big time, and his boss is a dick. Being in a really shitty situation sucks, but you can't just pretend he didn't put HIMSELF there. That's what makes striving to dig himself out of that hole so admirable.
This applies to lots of situations, both in fiction and real life. At the end of the day, people are responsible for their own actions and saying "Well it's someone else's fault cause they said this" just diverts attention away from the actual root cause, allowing it to fester and screw someone else over later, cause nobody ever bothers to fix it cause why fix the hard problem when you can tweet about the easy problem?
It's because when people get put into the hidden inventory/premature death arcs after jjk0 they look for a "switch" in what makes Geto into the one we see in the movie not realising that the 5 episodes are showing you a slow decline in how he got there. It wasn't just that Riko was killed by Toji or that Gojo asked him if they could kill all the star plasma followers or even just having to eat curse spirits over and over again. It was all of them grouped together with the loss of one of his comrades during that time and then Yuki "offering" a solution to the end of the "marathon". She thought she was just bumping ideas off of a fellow sorcerer she had no clue what state his psyche was in. I doubt she realised going "well yeah technically you could kill all humans but nobody is crazy enough to do that right?" would actually lead to him doing exactly that.
it's definitely his fault, he chose this path, but he was heavily influenced by other characters and the shitty society they reside in. I think a lot of people find his character relatable, whether they want to admit it or not. We see certain groups/people be self-destructive and be in rough life positions all the time irl, and it's hard to always want to save or sympathize when you see so much of it, so many people end up having the same thoughts all around the world, and that's how prejudice begins. I think Jpn people probably relate a little more to his character than say, western country's people do but hey, not gonna speak any further on that lol. Same reason Naoya tops their JJK character popularity polls (which ik is a joke btw).
I really love these girst 5 episodes it adds so much weight to the first season and get-out as our current antagonist
When I watched this through a 2nd time I realized how similar in personality Yuji and Haibara are and it made me appreciate Nanami mentoring Yuji a lot more.

I've been waiting for your reaction to this episode for such a long time! I really loved both of your analysis of what happened with Geto. I find him to be one of the most compelling characters in the whole series to be honest- just the symbolism of him literally having to digest the filth of the world. Him and Gojo are opposites in that way, where Gojo's technique allows him to push everything away and shut everything out while Geto's technique requires him to draw everything in and absorb it and I feel like it's a direct representation of what happened here in how they processed their trauma.
But also yeah, no, Jujutsu Society 100% contributed to the spiral. We've seen in season one and this season how they send sorcerers on missions that they know are above their level, and how they expect people to move on from the death of those close to them with no help and no mourning. There's also the whole side point of both of Geto's parents being nonsorcerers which must have been hard to deal with. Did his parents just think he was crazy? How long did he live before he was discovered and brought to Jujutsu High?
These episodes made really respect the character work this could do

When Geto was referring to exterminating non-sorcerers Yuki was aware of what he meant by exterminate she's just very openminded and so she didn't feel the need to immediately rebuke the statement like many others would, invertedly leading Geto down a murderous path
Geto 100% wouldn't have turned out this way if the "jujutsu system" was better, Gojo is definitely right to want to change things. Think about some examples, Geto's friend wouldn't have died if they handled these "missions" better. Those 2 kids Geto saved wouldn't have even been in that position if their system educated rural people on how to handle people like them, like yes it was humans being awful, but it stems from ignorance. Hell, the whole star plasma thing wouldn't have even happened if toji didn't become this bounty hunter who dgaf, and he only became that way because he was abused by his own clan because they're prejudiced and elitist. So 100% if the whole society was better, none of these people would've gone down these roads. I like how the writer made it very clear the cause-and-effect relationships with society and the characters. Early JJK is peak-ly written.
Also, like how you guys actually understand and figure out all the info and subtext to scenes, even on ones where it's just about the power system or someone's specific powers. Shows you're actually paying attention lol.

We’ve seen it many times in different media, mutants for example, or in black clover. Humans knowing there’s different types of humans that have abilities would just create fear because they’ll see themselves as inferior since they don’t have powers, then they’ll turn on them because of it, and there’s significantly so so much more regular humans than there are sorcerers, it’s almost impossible to fight back unless gojo just steps in and says stop but he wouldn’t want to kill then of course

I dont feel yuki was responsible for his change, she just gave advice and insight so she cant be blamed for how he interpreted it or the decisions he made. She didnt force him into any decisions.

This is my absolute favorite episode. Getou is the most complex character, and his relationship with jujutsu society is so interesting.

In JJK Zero we see Geto with Toji’s Curse spirit.
Did anyone realise that the “Mr Sonoda” which Geto kills as he takes over that cult is the one who ordered the hit on Riko (plasma vessel). So he avenged her death, while nothing was done by Jujutsu Sorcerers or under the society protected by the Sorcerers.
Also that was not a Russian doll cursed spirit that fell from the sky and crushed Mr Sonoda. It’s a Japanese Daruma dolls - seen as a symbol of perseverance and good luck, making them a popular gift of encouragement. Also a fun reference to a manga - Kami sama no Iutoori, where the plot starts with people in a classroom getting exploded in a sadistic game. Probably a reference to Squid game too.
“Daruma fell over” is, is the Japanese version of a childhood game “Red Light Green Light” (Korean).

I’m glad you remember Gojo asking geto if he wanted to kill all those people. I think a theme Gege(author) likes to use with Gojo is he being so powerful that he’s essentially not human. Like when Gojo and Geto are talking in the gymnasium, Gojo says that he doesn’t care for the weak. Geto ends up the same way but they both wear those emotions differently from eachother. Meaning Gojo can handle thoughts like that(being so far removed from normal human thought). But then geto does it, he can’t handle that, it’s too above him.
One last thing:There’s many occasions in the manga when Geto is represented as a Buddha like figure. The smile & the earlobes; or like in 0 when he was helping that mom and daughter. There’s also times where Gojo is Buddha like, like when he was fighting Toji. Which was actual enlightenment

It _would_ be a bit much if that’s all it took. But it wasn’t. It was also his colleagues dying, having to eating curses born from humans, the two little girls being hated by their village; all of it combined is what changed his mindset.

It's just sad because if you think about it, all of this goes back to Gojo, who had no say in the matter. As much as he relishes being the strongest, he didn't ask for that, he was just born that way. It was such a hard hit to Geto to see Gojo become more powerful than he is now and have the right to talk about killing non-sorcerers so casually, just because he was the strongest, whereas it took him seeing the Star Plasma Vessel and Haibara die to finally consider making his ideal a reality, even if he wasn't the strongest or if it would make him a criminal to his best friend. To Gojo, that meant that he made Geto what he is, simply because he was too strong for anyone, even his best friend, to ever come close to.
You should watch some of the english covers/translations of the intro and outro. It really reveals a lot about Gojo and Geto's mindsets at this time.

I believe he’s the strongest because he is Satoru Gojo, yeah the reputation and the powers that comes with the last name Gojo made him a strong man but the way he mastered those abilities and his fighting skills are possible because of his intellect.
And I tell that this will be more clear when MAPPA animate more of the manga and you will see what I mean when you reach there.
This scene was so famous even KFC was broken up seeing Gojo and Geto break up! Remember people go eat some KFC in the memory of GetoXGojo break up.
If memory serves. The person Geto crushed on scene was the one who ordered the bounty on Riko. So he was clearly airing out a grudge.
I also quite like how when Yuki talked about the ways Geto was feeling about hating regular people and wanting to save them, she pointed at the emergency exit and a dark corridor to show the former was the easy way out.

The unspoken part of "If I was Satoru Gojo, my plans would become reasonable possibilities" is "If you, Satoru Gojo, join me, this becomes a realistic possibility." If these two S Class Sorcerors team up this is not only possible, it may actually be almost easy.
It’s not that it would be easy if they teamed up, it’s that it would be easy if gojo was the one with the ideals. Gojo doesn’t need a group of sorcerers like what geto has to try and make his dream a reality, it’s like what mei mei said, gojo doesn’t need to team up with anybody if he decided to off everyone in the nation

Quick note, the reason Gojo can afford to keep his Limitless up 24/7 all while frying and healing his brain constantly is due to the Six Eyes. They allow him to have an unparalleled level of efficiency with his cursed energy, to the point it gives off the illusion he has infinite Cursed Energy, even though he actually doesn't. He's just so efficient that he pretty much recovers CE faster than he can drain his reserves of the stuff.
Yuki was more so saying in her second point to teach everyone to control their cursed energy and be sorcerers to some extent. It wasn't that she was implying the eradication of normal humans at all but that's rather what geto took from it.
My intepretation of Geto's statement about Gojo being the strongest is that he's asking Gojo if his personality (arrogance/confidence) is what made him as strong as he is now, or if being the strongest made his personality (arrogant/confident). So basically, is being confident and believing you'll achieve something what makes you better and stronger to do just that. This comes from Gojo calling out Geto on doing something he can't possibly achieve, aka Geto is arrogant to think he has even a chance of achieving it. Geto is challenging the idea that he can't achieve it; If he is arrogant and keeps chipping away at it, he'll become strong enough to achieve it just like he believes Gojo has achieved his strength. This also aligns with the power system and Geto knowing how far Gojo has come.

Being the strongest allows Gojo the freedom to be the person that he is. He didn't become the strongest because of how he chose to live his life. Gojo Satoru is Gojo Satoru because he was born with the Six Eyes and the Limitless technique.
To this end, Geto isn't limited because of his desire to destroy all non-sorcerors. He is limited simply because he is. If he weren't, if he *were* the strongest, his goals wouldn't change that, and he would be able to achieve them.

Just a small correction, Yuki didn't misinterpret Geto when he said, "eliminate all non-sorcerers." She fully understood Geto was talking about killing them all, hence the response of "I'm not crazy enough to do that." Theoretically, it really isn't a bad practical solution to the problem created in this world. Yuki understands it's an option, It's just an incredibly immoral one.
I think the statement more so asks is gojo the strongest because of his hard work dedication and personal traits tactics etc or is it simply cuz he was naturally talented and destined to become the strongest by birth

I love the opposition between Gojo and Geto in this episode. Gojo became basically a god, but can't understand people's feelings. This "I dont care" side of Gojo aint just to make the character funny, it's his weakness. The man who see and understand everything can't understand people. On the other side Geto have and understand feelings, that's what cause him to be depressed and have criminal toughts. He even killed his family wich prove that it's not a selfish plan. Even when he's depressed when asked if he want something salty or sweet, he said "Gojo prefer sweet".
They where both special sorcerer, but Gojo choose to be stronger and became distant from the world, while Geto choose to understand others and being crushed but Gojo's actions and the atrocity of the world
It’s deep to ask are you the strongest cause you were born as you. Or as you the strongest because you are you. It’s the idea of talent vs being gifted. Cause in many ways he his born gifted but there’s a level of you can take that for granted and another level where you exceed that level with effort
Eventually this conversation really backfires on Yuki 😅
The most hurftull part of this episode is that Geto makes way too much sense for you to stop him.
Like you know it's wrong, he knows it's wrong, but there is such a logical conclusion to his point that there's no way to fight his logic.
