i know im a bit late but this is a concept album, every song is a story about a person that they have personally met, all the people are on the album cover.
i'll list what every song is about in case anyone is curious:
life itself is about a strange guy who has a hard time fitting into society, he spends his time obsessing abotu sci-fi, drinking, etc, possibly not living up to the expectations of his parents. its also about embracing who you are in a way
youth is about a mother that had to give up her child (the reason is unkown), dave (the lead singer) said that she was crying, but at the same time the memories that they had from that previous life made her happy-so she was also smiling
season 2 episode 3 is about a girl who does nothing all day. the song is from the perspective of her boyfriend. there are two sides to him, most of the time, he realizes how depressing her lifestyle is (laying on the couch all day watching cartoons, only eating cereal, not wearing clean clothes). his other self tries ignoring this because he loves her, but he realizes he cant (And everything I tried to leave behind is still beside us and lately I can't take it). he wishes he could help her but she "turns to styrofoam", basically showing how fragile she is. the line "Dont you need me oh baby boy cus im so happy without your noise" is the girl saying she doesnt need him or anyone, rejecting the fact that she needs help. hes basically going back and forth, not wanting to admit that their relationship is hopeless
pork soda is about a relationship drifting apart, one of them asking why things arent the way they used to be. the line "somebody said i'm a fuckin' slum" is about an encounter the husband has on the street with someone calling him rude, which basically leads to him questioning if hes the problem or not. the "pinapples in my head" line came after dave heard a homeless man say it, not sure what it means tho.
mama's gun is about a taxi driver they met who used to do trucking. she would take crystal meth to stay awake longer. one time she took too much and ended up blacking out for a month. when she woke up, she had the feeling she had murdered someone. she began hearing voices (from "neverland"), one of them (she named "dizzy jim") kept telling her she was the one that had murdered her husband. the song keeps repeating "in the summer silence i was getting violent, in the summer silence i was doing nothing". this is just my interpretation, but i think "lay with me my dear, in the evening clear, i'll be dreaming in, my paper-pale skin." is maybe her husbands voice in her head telling her to join him in the grave.
cane shuga is about the boyfriend of the girl in season 2 episode 3. this one i dont know much about, but its basically his drug addiction getting in the way of his relationship. also i think the lyrics are lik that because its supposed to replicate the feeling of being high. (cane shuga is cocaine)
the other side of paradise is about a girls love moving away from her, buying a "one-way ticket" to the west to make it big. he calls her flexing about how rich he is (but ironically he is calling from a payphone, suggestings hes maybe actually broke) and then starst falling for a richer girl that he met in the west. the girl is obviously angry about him living a luxury life while leaving her and their children at home, but she "tries to keep her cool" because if she shows her anger he will definitely leave her, she "settles for a ghost i never knew". in pursuit of money, he starts losing track of who he was before this, and as his goals become harder to achive he airs out his frustrations on god ("Screaming at the sun you blow into"), blowing into fire only gives it more strength, meaning the more he forsakes god the more hes gonna need him to bring him back in touch with reality. "that girl is gone but i still try" is saying that the girl's older self is gone, she knows shes not that person anymore, but she still tries to imagine what her life would have been like if the man had stayed. "the bullet hit but maybe not" is her making a suicide attempt, she wrestles with her older self, but ultimately she pulls the trigger (it hids my head and i feel numb). another interpretation is that she pulled the trigger so that she could feel something other than the guy, this would explain the "i feel numb".
(also that is not a whoo sound effect, its a dog barking)
take a slice is about a guy who does prostituion to pay for collage, but has a hard time balancing them. the line "Wake me when the bell rings i'm gonna sleep 'cause you live in my daydreams" is him not sleeping through class and not paying attention, so he can get back to his job which he seems to like more
poplar st is about a pedophile, its from a perspective of a young boy who is the current victim of her. however the child actually believes that he is in love with her and think the relationship is two sided. the "And all your days are gone, sitting on the floor in your underwear begging me for more" is her making the protagonis belive that he is in control, but in the next line (And all my days are gone, sitting on the floor in my underwear, begging you for more) is now him begging for more, making it clear that hes not in control. "Just another boy who lived on Poplar Street" is the realization that he was just another victim
lastly, agnes is about a friend of the band that commited suicide. i recommend watching the music video for this one, dave went through a human centrifuge 18 times bc he felt it was the only way to express what agnes was feeling

"pineapples", if i remember right, is a street name for acid. "pineapples are in my head" means they're tripping on acid.
pineapples is the street name because of their. well. actually acidic quality on an actual acid-neutral-base scale.

The songs of the album really coordinate to what its try to say. To me, its about the bady days you experienced, the tough times you go through, because in the end, that what makes you human, thats why its called how to be a human being, to have struggled in life and recognize it.

Dude, they just released a new single called Creatures In Heaven; it's very different from this vibe but if you just have it on loud somewhere dark? I swear to God, its like you ascend.

I always took Mama’s gun as a story about dementia but it clearly doesn’t make sense with the title but that idea has rooted itself very deeply in my brain

It's actually more about a drug-induced haze? Getting the sense that something horrible was done by you, but not fully being aware of it

Each song on this album was built around a story the band members (mostly Dave) were told by people they met at gigs or in life. Dave said something like “you’d be surprised what people will tell you if you just listen.”
The only semi autobiographical song on this album is Agnes, and Dave really does not talk about who Agnes was or what they were to one another outside of the song. It’s also the only song Dave refuses to perform anymore because it makes him cry. This is my favorite Glass Animals album. It’s trippy while still being upbeat, electro pop with awesome lyrics. IMO even though they’ve since put out 2 more albums, this one is always going to be their best effort.
Mama’s Gun and Cane Suga are all time songs to drive around playing loud with the windows down in the summer.

They crashed off a cliff after this album. Dreamland was overly ambitious, but the pop culture references were to try hard. The vocalist also took center stage and performed in all the videos, when in previous releases the videos were performed by various actors. And after the “success” of Heat Waves, that has made them for life, it looks like they’ve given up on artistic integrity and have cashed in. 😢
