I mean, sonic and mario are actually the perfect representatives from videogames to be in the olympics. Afterall, the olympics is all about temporarily setting aside political and cultural differences, to compete for the same glory. Seeing as mario and sonic are "rivals", seeing them put aside their differences to compete in friendly competition, is actually completely evocative of the olympic spirit

As far as I know about that, Japan did say something about using characters from from multiple japanese franchises Such as DragonBall, Super Mario, Mighty-Atom (Astro-Boy to other territories), Sailor-Moon, Doraemon, and many others that originated in Japan for Something Olympic related

Winter 2010 is easily the best out of all the Olympic Games. The winter events were much more engaging and enjoyable to play through. The festival mode provides a sense of fulfilment and encouragement. The dream events were easily the main highlights and they were serious improvements over the first game. It has great amount of detail and fan service when it comes to levels, addition of other characters like Silver and some really great remixed music from both franchises for all fans to enjoy. The mini games in general were all fun. Dream Figure skating in Sonic's world was easily one of the best experiences you could get from the game. It felt so magical and awesome! From jumping on robots to figure skating against Chaos. It doesn't get any better than that! The DS version of Winter 2010 is also the best handheld version out of all of them. It has a really great story mode and the mini games are just as fun as they are in the Wii version. Would highly recommend it! The other games never lived up to this one IMO. They really should have stopped after London 2012 considering they've pretty much overstayed their welcome now.
Winter 2010 is the only one I can go back to. Absolutely love it. Played it religiously back in late middle school/early high school. Never played Beijing 2008, Sochi 2014 or Rio 2016.
I had London 2012 for a short time so it didn’t really leave a lasting appeal to me. Might go back to it one day.

The 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games is by far my favorite. 2012 London is really good too

2008 was fine. And 2014 and 2016 had great sountracks. I'm thinking the series is dead, but I had fun while it lasted.
Edit: Since the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics are just 2 months away and Sega hasn't announced anything for the Switch yet, I'm afraid that's it for the series. Especially due to the poor sales of 2014 and 2016.

I'd like to see it happen but I think Miyamoto may be one of the main obstacles. Whenever a crossover with another game franchise happens Miyamoto's main request to the devs is they should do something other than trying to recreate the core genre of the Nintendo IP they're making use of. Like when Mario+Rabbids was being made his only major demand for the Ubisoft devs was that they NOT make a platformer as they wanted to see a more unique concept (and being an XCOM styled strategy game was pretty damn unexpected), and with Hyrule Warriors apparently the team at Omega Force originally did want some more traditional Zelda elements like dungeons but Miyamoto told them to stick to making it more of a Warriors styled game because their biggest strength is pure action (and given what happened with Dynasty Warriors 9 I think it's safe to say Miyamoto knew what he was talking about there).
Now with Mario+Rabbids and Hyrule Warriors this worked out pretty well as both games were well received by fans and critics alike, but I guess the issue with Mario and Sonic is both series are icons in the platformer genre and in terms of "what else to do" with a crossover it seems odd to do anything BUT a platformer.
2012 is my favorite, my sister and I used to play London parties all the time! So its nostalgic to me : ). But I also really love 2010, I played that one a lot on my own after cause 2012 was how I discovered the series

Wario has an 7 or 8 out of possible 10 Speed stat in the earlier games. He's faster than Mario and almost as fast as Sonic. Waluigi has the absolute highest Jumping stat out of the whole Mario cast.

The online for the Sochi one was actually pretty cool, it played the same as just the regular events, but the idea that you're playing against real people was just interesting to me.
Should have covered the handheld versions, especially the 3DS version of 2012 London.
You should do a video on the portable ones at some point. The only one I have out of them is the 3DS version of London 2012, but that version has an actual story mode, so I feel like there's probably some variations between the console and handheld versions.

The greatest reason why M&SatWOG (DS)'s story is far superior to the story of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games is because instead of be sexist by having the female athletes have their own non-gender-neutral team of the Girls' Story, they decided that they automatically have Sonic the Hedgehog interact with Princess Daisy in Mario & Sonic at the Winter Olympic Games, and right at Vancouver, Canada where I live as well!

I used to play Mario and Sonic at the Olympic games London 2012 all the time when I was a kiddo. I ABSOLUTELY loved that game.
It doesn't look like we're getting a Mario and Sonic game for the Pyongcheng Winter Olympics. Considering how the last two games were, it's a good idea for Mario and Sonic to take a break.
Honestly, I didn't think we'd get a Mario and Sonic game after Winter 2010, but it's cool that there are five games now.

Honestly, since the Olynpic Games are non canon, it would've been an amazing idea to use the Sochi Games' story mode as a way to bring in Mephiles, since each character is fighting their shadow.

Somehow that little "yeah" at 4:13 is the most relatable thing about playing anything on the Wii.
Being both a Mario and Sonic platform player (mostly the former), seeing the two rivals of the platforming genre IMO showing competiton in sport is quite a sight, as at that time seeing these 2 together officially were unheard of, and I was excited years ago that this was happening.

One of my fondest memories of my DS Lite was going over to my babysitters putting in the Mario and Sonic at the 2008 Olympic Games and playing every event with my friends so even when the games are bad I still have a soft spot for this series
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games 2010 is my favorite. I only ever played the first two, but I remember playing the Winter one way more. I loved that Mario Galaxy skiing game so much.
