I really think in a lot of the music he sings back and forth between two different perspectives. Sometimes,if you follow the songs in the albums its like the songs are different people arguing, then him talking to himself and then the other person talking to themselves. It gets heavy.
This band is anonymous and has " lore" it gets real deep,

Your insight into the songs without the lore is spot on... Dive deep and start from the beginning ..... Vessel (singer/song writer) has been through some shit and tells a story across the span of three albums. The lyrics are beautifully tragic and haunting. The music is mwah 🧑‍🍳💋 chef's kiss*. Will definitely be watching for more Sleep Token content. Hope you jump down the rabbit hole 🕳️.....🙏

There's a few sleepy t songs that have references to a car crash and I feel like granite is pretty heavy on it. In dark signs "marks on my dashboard, new scars that I didn't ask for"

Of all the reaction vids I’ve watched for Granite, yours delved the deepest in the lyrics. I never did understand the meaning behind “You only drink the water when you think it’s holy” until you said it’s about trust. That just added another layer of emotion to the song that I didn’t think had enough room left in it. Thank you!

I take his music as an inner monolog. Its an eternal battle with himself and his unattainable love.

As someone mentioned, your interpretation is spot on without knowing the lore. The vocalist and writer goes by Vessel, as he is merely a vessel to convey a deity's message (but it goes deeper), and I hadn't even considered myself the line "I was more than just a body in your passenger seat" as having his soul taking the wheel, or perhaps the deity. That's real good analysis there haha

I tend to lean towards this being mostly about a previous relationship. The line,
I see you go half blind when you're looking at me
    But I am
Hits hard because I see it as a cry for recognition that he exists. I think therefore I am.

As an artist,we use metaphors as a resource to express our feelings without being completely exposed, that ambiguity in the narrative serves to make you try to decrypt what we are (the artist ,the writer, etc) is trying to say, it engages you (not all people) sometimes it is direct, sometimes scattered, sometimes their are talking to themselves, sometimes their are shouting it specifically to someone but without someone knowing it all and honestly I find that wonderful, for someone who wants to know everything and get to the point of origin, I think I learned to enjoy having several perspectives from one subject or not knowing the true meaning at all, ahhhh man that's why I love music

Theyre fighting again. Perhaps in the car. Shes being venomous again and his heart has turned to stone, granite. Shes half blind when shes looking at him, like blinded by anger. He kind of spells out the argument in the song. This third album is an interesting departure from the others. Like in the song Jaws, her anger is on full force but in granite, and this album as a whole, hes over it. This is his closure album.

So, there have only been a few songs that I saw as self reflections until I read a comment that said “think of Vessel (the singer) standing in a mirror singing to himself when you listen to any song) and you giving your interpretation, as well as thinking about your comments, really has me thinking. A run down of Sleep Token is the singer had an encounter with the deity “Sleep” and their music are “tokens” to the deity. They call their concerts “gatherings of worship”. And the members of the live performances are all vessels for the deity. You have vessel (singer and piano) ii (drummer), iii (bassist), iv guitarist. And three ladies who do backing vocals. His masks have, overtime, changed or progressed and people say the mask is the deity and is being eaten away. There are three albums known as the “trilogy” and they all tell the story. There are EPs before the albums that get everything started. So back to the thing about him talking to himself makes me think that the mask/sleep is kind of like a subconscious being that has taken over who he really is. Sleep could also be a metaphor for drugs, abuse etc that all combined have changed who he truly is. Also in pictures and stuff you can see scars in several places on his body. Sorry for the long comment, but a bit of background can help give different interpretations of their music. Or it’s all just metaphorical which is more than likely what it’s about, but then again, it’s been very fun trying to dig in and try to figure out its true meaning.

No such thing as thinking too much when it comes to sleep token. Some things are subjective too, I see where you're coming from, that it sounds like he's talking to himself and that you can see that perspective and connect to it. Art is about that connection, even if the one you're making isn't the original intention. I think Vessel would love people to see a number of meanings ways to connect to the music he's putting out there. It's a hard hitting song any way you look at it and you've got some great insight into tone and lyrics.

Also the bass in the song is the same throughout the whole song. Listen to it again when the heavy part comes in the bass is the same as the soft parts. So wild.

I'm suprised nobody explained the lore yet. I would, but I'm a new fan and I don't want to butcher it so if an OG could explain it for him, it could give him another perspective to listen from. Especially from the Eveless Adam theory I heard about. Such a good but tragic perspective to consider.

When you are sure that you met that person and you are sure it is going to work, but that person is toxic. All you want is to make it work. It creates a conundrum. It can be so hard for you to get out. Because we want love. We want to be connected. Sometimes it doesn't work. And you can become desperate.

Most Sleep Token songs, if not ALL except for one, have a grand story to them that arches through three albums, and they're all about this man who encounters this deity and she causes him to become this CLEARLY bad person, and it's quite a toxic relationship, but what it can be about on a more basic level is just about an abusive and toxic past relationship.
There's only one song of theirs, which is on the same album as this song, that's actually about the man talking to himself.

I really wish these "reaction" channels would stop claiming to make reaction videos when theyre really just lyric analysis videos. If it were a reaction video, you wouldnt pause it every 3 seconds to break down each word in the song. Youd just LISTEN to the music and allow us to watch your REACTION to the music. But thats not what most of these videos are.
