I didn't even know many people still played Live and thought everyone was on the newest freeshards these days. How is the live population overall?

Well most people are on the freeshards. I myself prefer the patch level of live, and playing the toons I worked on for years. You typically get ~200-300 people in primetime RvR on live these days, still enough to have fun. There's also an event going on throughout this week that lets you roll a fresh character and level/rank up quickly with everyone else in a PvP-ruleset BG.
