I LOVE makeup and skincare. That said, I did a big declutter last week, mostly things expired by a year. I give away as much as I can away to family and friends.
The funny thing is that I decluttered when I moved last september, and I kept a lot of stuff that I *should use more often*. Stuff like your Hourglass highlighter for example... And just last week I threw out those as well, cause I noticed that I still wasnt using it at all haha! But thats also part of the process :D It's awesome to do this approach of use untill it's finished and thén buy a new one, cause you can then shop without the "feeling guilty" part.
I think you did a good job decluttering your makeup, i can definitely see quite a big progress from your last session! Thanks to previous declutter I didn't have much to begin with, but I too have decluttered some products here and there in the last week. I'm trying to be as ruthless as I can and I think limiting my options would actually benefit me in the long run, but I'm still holding onto a handful of pretty lipsticks hoping I'll be able to use them up. My ultimate goal is to fit everything including brushes into a small bag.

It IS difficult and takes time - I decluttered about 4x over 2 years to get to this point and that feeling of decisiveness for sure. Every small step is a win ❤️
I LOVE to see someone else who lives for red lips as much as me. I frequently declutter makeup, but I feel like I am finally finding my "home" with makeup. It's been a long time coming but I finally feel like I know what my look is.
I'm similar to your skin tone and had the same issue with that shade of the Hourglass bronzer. I got the Nude Bronze light shade instead and it's my absolute favourite, I'm on my second compact I love it so much.
This was so satisfying to watch! I agree, makeup tends to be one of those places where I think I need to hold onto things “just in case”, even when I rarely wear some of it. I have decluttered a ton over the last five years, and have a fairly small collection, but still keep thinking there are things I can get rid of and still haven’t. I’m noticing that with eyeshadow especially. I have three palettes, and while I like them, it feels like too much. And I am starting to realize thats because there are only certain shades I use consistently. I don’t wear eyeshadow as much as I used to anymore, but I do like variety too. I’m stuck on it for the moment. I’m sure at some point I will attempt depotting the shades I really want to keep and downsize it; for now, I’m still experimenting and seeing how much of it I use so I can see whats worth keeping and whats not. Omg this literally popped up right when I started decluttering my makeup and was looking for a video to declutter to 😂 but yes for me I find I hang onto so much make up especially because I work in Sephora and it’s hard for me to just let go of it but I’ve been getting better because I find that I get overwhelmed when there’s too much so it’s been a process but I’m getting there!!
You don’t have a lot we all need selection ? But I can talk I have an Alex nine drawer but I only use seven , one hair care and the other backup products , but I adore my collection I did do a major declutter and all my drug store products were given to my family , so all my collections are high end ! And I just love every item I have !
Good job! I definitely recommend the hourglass mascara. It's my one and only. For SPF - my skin is super super finicky and that's the one product I will over invest in (and cruelty free). I've tried a zillion and north american brands just don't work on my highly rosacea sensitive oily-in-summer, dry-in-winter combo skin. I recommend: Ultra Violette the supreme screen (australian brand), Purito Centenella Green spf (better for winter for me, I go for the fragrance free one) & Beet the Sun spfs (Korean brands). Latter two can be found on amazon.I don't use foundation and these spfs have given me great skin. Ps - oily lids here too, and love cream eye shadows. I highly recommend rituelle de fille everything for clean (moving forward) and the small/mini (lasts forever) tatcha silk canvas primer for eyes - if ever.
I could be wrong but I don’t think you are supposed to keep the protective plastic on the Milk makeup blushes...you would just keep the twist on plastic cap after opening it for the first time. At least that’s what I do and it works really well, never had any issues.
Make up is something I haven’t wanted to acquire anything new of, for a very long time. I also few like since turning 30 I haven’t been going clubbing, partying or to places and occasions that a Smokey eye with glitter would be suited for. However, I see so much live still left in so many products I own, and I don’t want to simply toss them because I feel guilty for spending that much money and not using the item entirely, because I don’t want to contribute to the already endless amount of trash being thrown on our landfill, etc. Before the panini, I could pass these along to friends and acquaintances with no problem, but now everyone is more afraid of using things that have already been touched (understandably so), so I keep holding onto them even tho I don’t think I’ll ever use. Soon I’ll have to have a come to Jesus, accept it for what it is, dispose of what I don’t use and learn from the mistake!
You said you have oily eyelids. I’m curious if those Tom Ford shadows crease on you without a primer! I’ve been eyeing them forever but I’m scared they will crease bad on my stupid oily eyelids!

I’m not sure but I think that the plastic bit of the milk make up is not supposed to remain once you open the product. I have two things and I got rid of the piece and they don’t get messy or dry...
On the milk products I always remove the second cap that they have to avoid the mess... and just to make you to know, the illume color trio is going to be avalaible again to autumn 2020, I think it was a reformulation... hourglass wanted to be completly vegan on this year so they discontinued that product to make it vegan as the rest of the brand! I’m waiting to put my hands on the trio 😍😍

I got rid of/used up all make up products that didn't work for me or I didn't really like. Yes, it's nice having 8 foundations, 15 rouges, 50 eye shadows, 40 lipsticks, ... but it's nonsense considering I have my favorite foundation and my favorite 5 lipsticks. I also got sick of organizing the stuff. Sooo yes, decluttering was great even though I felt guilty for the money spent
I stopped buying makeup 3 yrs ago. I then started buying way too much skincare. I stopped that a couple yrs ago. Now, I make sure to finish something before I buy another one. it’s taken me years to get here, but it’s so freeeeeing!
I bought a lot of makeup just because of the hype. It makes me sad when I think that I spent so much money on all that stuff laying in my drawers just to get expired. I decluttered about a year ago. There is still so much left. Gotta declutter once again soon. So far I've been focusing on finishing as much as possible. Haven't bought makeup in a couple of years. I unsubscribed to all kinds of beauty brands on social media so I don't get tempted to buy new things. My goal is to store all my makeup in one small bag. I like makeup but it doesn't mean that I have to own it all 😅
I actually do not own any makeup item. I find no purpose in it for me and no one has ever told me that not wearing any is an issue: coworkers, clients are used to my “natural” face. As I’m getting older, I’ve come to realize that many people do not wear makeup or very very little. I find mainstream media would like us to believe otherwise...Hence making many buy into the makeup culture and excessive buying of products.
Agree. Everyday I wear no makeup, I wash my face in water using a muslin cloth, and apply almond oil if I have time. If I'm going 'out' I sometimes wear eyeliner or lipstick. That's it. I literally can't get my head around how it's so accepted and 'normal' to wear loads of makeup and use tons of products to 'clean' your face.
I agree. I found that anything I could reasonably cut from my morning routine makes my mornings go more smoothly. I also found that I am less critical of my natural face when I'm used to seeing it and not my made up face. I also don't want to feel like I HAVE to wear makeup. Makeup is a fun art product that I can use when I want to look fancy or go out for something special. So I own very little!! Every time I reexamine it, some more goes. When I'm tempted to buy some new pretty product, I remember that I would just never use it! 😛
Sparkly Onion Rings well I used to do all the stuff for years but I stopped because things kept giving me bad reactions and I couldn't find products without dodgy chemicals in. I guess I've probably got fairly sensitive skin. The muslin cloth does the exfoliating and I do massage my face for' lymphatic drainage' sometimes. I do break out every now and then but I found in the past that using products just made it worse so it's more from necessity than trying to be a purist.😊
I just found your channel and have binge-watching your videos! ❤ I'm a makeup-lover, too, and I find that watching influencers who do low-/no-buys (i.e. Samantha Ravndahl), stopped receiving PR, and focus on using what they have inspire me to do the same.
I within the last year bought two eyeshadow pallets, kinda regret it as I don't wear makeup that often or use all the colours often, so funnily enough think I'm gonna stick to singles from now on at least that way I can have colours that I know I will wear :) :)
It's a relief to know that others also went through the phase that is make up hoarding. The 2018-2019 beauty & makeup booming era got me into a very bad habit of accumulating 30++ makeup products that I'll never use up! Had since decluttered 80% of them. Also proud that for 2 years now I've only bought 3 products that I actually need and really use.
i don’t wear makeup most days & i’m stuck between loving effortless, pretty natural looks & then just having fun with colors sometimes because my career is in art, haha. so what i do to manage is i have a small vanity in my bedroom i created using a shelf unit that has two drawers, and in the drawers i used create your own size dividers. it took some work & math on paper, but i mapped out sections for all different types of makeup products & in an organized flow that works for my mind. & my rule is i’m simply not allowed to purchase a type of product if its’ section in the drawer is full. the only section that goes beyond its’ space is my palette section, simply because they’re clunky & big and both eyeshadow & face palettes are in this section... so what i did was i bought a small bamboo dish drying holder & nailed it into the wall by my mirror & it slots in 8 eyeshadow palettes perfectly. & that is it. on top of my vanity is just my jewelry, my perfumes, my brushes & sponges, and a daily brush cleaner & a makeup remover.
One thing I do occasionally is pack up my makeup for a vacation. That really shows me my most loved items and how little I need. Skin care is harder for me, I have a bunch of the ordinary’s bottles which are impossible to travel with. But anyways, this is a good exercise especially to get rid of expired and unflattering items! 😊
Great Declutter! As I've gotten older the past few years, my skin and preferences have changed and I've gotten to know my preferences. I have been diligently using up products for a couple of years now (more aggressively this year) and I have decluttered shades and formulas that just aren't doing much for me. I love how the less I have, the more I feel like I have since I don't have 'dead weight' products weighing my makeup stash down. I'm growing more content and satisfied with buying less and less and just keeping the best.
Yes! Makeup is difficult to declutter. 😩 Transitioning to the magnetic palettes (w/ individual shadows) has worked well for me. Next project is a blush palette. 🌸 🌺 🌹
Makeup is so hard for me to get rid of! I have thrown out 3 super old palettes this year that I had pan in multiple shades and the formula had changed and it felt good but at the time it was a hard decision. I have another I am working on till the end of the year and then it will go as well. I have had to come the conclusion that makeup is a sunk cost and since I already spent the money I can't get that money back so I can do with it as I want. It also makes me not want to be wasteful with what I am buying but that's hard. I have had trouble getting rid of lipsticks so I put myself on a no buy and I am rarely tempted to buy one as they take forever to use. Project panning has also helped a lot!

You should look into tubing mascaras if you find it transfers for you - anything drugstore falls off my eyes and tubing mascaras have made and insane difference for me! Not sure if they’re available in Canada but I highly recommend mirinesse and blinc!
Do you watch Hannah Louise Poston? I think you would love her!! She did a no buy a couple years ago and then a low buy, and she post a lot of really thoughtful content about her relationship with her stuff including skincare and makeup.
I am actually working through my collection in a 'slow declutter' right now. I pick out a bunch of makeup from my collection to use for awhile and it either goes back into my drawers or gets decluttered. I have actually gotten rid of 16 items since I started about 2 weeks ago. It's about all I can handle to do it this way. It's so much easier for me if I can use it for awhile before deciding.
Ugh - so many of my things went off. I sniffed for an hour - all my RMS started to smell (and coconut oil makes get red bumps anyway) and all my Milk products smelled AWFUL. I haven't bought new makeup in over a year with the exception of mascara and I did replace a favorite Bobbi Brown art stick.
Omg seriously your collection is probably only 1/5 the size of mine (when you originally started) and I struggle to get rid of any of it! I have a combination of whataboutism and overzealousness. I took advantage of working at home to try things I wouldnt wear out. Have a better handle on what I like and what works for me. Bummer that my favorite is blush but wearing a mask all day, I dont wear any makeup currently.
I have to wear a mask all day at work too - so lately it’s been brows, mascara and concealer only. I think working from home is a great opportunity to experiment! That’s awesome!

My makeup collection has gone from filling a full size dresser- Literally- To basically a shoe box size. Except my lips stuff. For some reason I can’t seem so throw away my 8 yr old YSL glosses, etc.... it’s so annoying! Haha

I love the Hourglass Caution mascara, but if you have transfer issues, try the Mac Extended Play Gigablack Lash Mascara. It's a tubing mascara, so it doesn't smudge or flake, but it comes off with warm water. It's what I use on my lower lashes because I don't like to set my concealer. EDIT: Mac is not CF, but there are other tubing mascaras... I think Thrive has a decent one.
I’m keeping what I have until quarantine and WFH life wraps up as a just in case. Then it’s all going in the garbage. I’m replacing about 1/4 of what I previously had and jumping full force into clean products.
I have purchased eyeshadow palettes that others have praised on TH-cam. However, I don’t share that same positive energy toward those palettes. It is extremely silly to keep these palettes. I do know know this on some level. My opinion is the only one that matters when determining which palettes stay in my collection. Why can’t I get rid of them?

My entire makeup collection consists of 1 mascara, 2 eyeliners, and 1 lip balm. That’s it. I live in a hot and humid climate and I would just sweat off all my makeup so I gave it all up. There was no point. It is so freeing!
Hi! Here are two CF sunscreens I recommend -- Dear, Klairs - Soft Airy UV Essence SPF50+ PA++++ and the PURITO - Centella Green Level Unscented Sun! Hope either of those work for you. :)
Love it. I will do another declutter of my makeup soon as well. I can only take a small amount travelling so I will ger rid off quite a bit of my collection.
I’m definitely not a minimalist in fashion. I do capsules only for vacation but I not use a lot of makeup products with the same job ☺️ I have a couple of lipsticks, but I do use other products one as powder and one as the cream version. I have a makeup capsule and I like it 💁🏻♀️
I was just thinking how fresh and glowing your skin looked and you said it was oily! I admire your ruthlessness in getting rid of so much of your make up Christina. I will have to try decluttering mine again and hope some of your decisiveness will rub off on me.

The Dear klairs sunscreen is so good. Did not break me out. If you have dry skin, I recommend the soft uv air sunscreen

They do crease a little bit but I just tap out what’s creased and good as new! ❤️

I have a tripod with a ball head so I can tilt the camera mount to 90 degrees - I have a Manfrotto stand if this helps! ❤️
I don’t like the smell of Milk Makeup. Somehow it smells “off” or is that just me?
I find it smells like play dough kinda!
I think that it depends on the product. My Lit highlighter smelled rancid, the blushes smell fruity, and the bronzer smells like play doh.

I got rid of/used up all make up products that didn't work for me or I didn't really like. Yes, it's nice having 8 foundations, 15 rouges, 50 eye shadows, 40 lipsticks, ... but it's nonsense considering I have my favorite foundation and my favorite 5 lipsticks. I also got sick of organizing the stuff. Sooo yes, decluttering was great even though I felt guilty for the money spent

with milks products you have to remove and throw out that clear plastic dome thingy before first using it :D and it doesn't get messy that way
Yes! I was thinking the same thing the whole time! If you just toss the clear dome then it stays really nice and doesn’t get all weird

I stopped buying makeup 3 yrs ago. I then started buying way too much skincare. I stopped that a couple yrs ago. Now, I make sure to finish something before I buy another one. it’s taken me years to get here, but it’s so freeeeeing!

I bought a lot of makeup just because of the hype. It makes me sad when I think that I spent so much money on all that stuff laying in my drawers just to get expired. I decluttered about a year ago. There is still so much left. Gotta declutter once again soon. So far I've been focusing on finishing as much as possible. Haven't bought makeup in a couple of years. I unsubscribed to all kinds of beauty brands on social media so I don't get tempted to buy new things. My goal is to store all my makeup in one small bag. I like makeup but it doesn't mean that I have to own it all 😅
I actually do not own any makeup item. I find no purpose in it for me and no one has ever told me that not wearing any is an issue: coworkers, clients are used to my “natural” face. As I’m getting older, I’ve come to realize that many people do not wear makeup or very very little. I find mainstream media would like us to believe otherwise...Hence making many buy into the makeup culture and excessive buying of products.
I agree with you, not many people in my life wear a lot of makeup and it inspires me to streamline that part of my life too :)
Agree. Everyday I wear no makeup, I wash my face in water using a muslin cloth, and apply almond oil if I have time. If I'm going 'out' I sometimes wear eyeliner or lipstick. That's it. I literally can't get my head around how it's so accepted and 'normal' to wear loads of makeup and use tons of products to 'clean' your face.
I agree. I found that anything I could reasonably cut from my morning routine makes my mornings go more smoothly. I also found that I am less critical of my natural face when I'm used to seeing it and not my made up face.
I also don't want to feel like I HAVE to wear makeup. Makeup is a fun art product that I can use when I want to look fancy or go out for something special.
So I own very little!! Every time I reexamine it, some more goes. When I'm tempted to buy some new pretty product, I remember that I would just never use it! 😛

Sparkly Onion Rings well I used to do all the stuff for years but I stopped because things kept giving me bad reactions and I couldn't find products without dodgy chemicals in. I guess I've probably got fairly sensitive skin. The muslin cloth does the exfoliating and I do massage my face for' lymphatic drainage' sometimes. I do break out every now and then but I found in the past that using products just made it worse so it's more from necessity than trying to be a purist.😊

I within the last year bought two eyeshadow pallets, kinda regret it as I don't wear makeup that often or use all the colours often, so funnily enough think I'm gonna stick to singles from now on at least that way I can have colours that I know I will wear :) :)
It's a relief to know that others also went through the phase that is make up hoarding. The 2018-2019 beauty & makeup booming era got me into a very bad habit of accumulating 30++ makeup products that I'll never use up! Had since decluttered 80% of them. Also proud that for 2 years now I've only bought 3 products that I actually need and really use.
i don’t wear makeup most days & i’m stuck between loving effortless, pretty natural looks & then just having fun with colors sometimes because my career is in art, haha.
so what i do to manage is i have a small vanity in my bedroom i created using a shelf unit that has two drawers, and in the drawers i used create your own size dividers. it took some work & math on paper, but i mapped out sections for all different types of makeup products & in an organized flow that works for my mind. & my rule is i’m simply not allowed to purchase a type of product if its’ section in the drawer is full. the only section that goes beyond its’ space is my palette section, simply because they’re clunky & big and both eyeshadow & face palettes are in this section... so what i did was i bought a small bamboo dish drying holder & nailed it into the wall by my mirror & it slots in 8 eyeshadow palettes perfectly. & that is it.
on top of my vanity is just my jewelry, my perfumes, my brushes & sponges, and a daily brush cleaner & a makeup remover.
One thing I do occasionally is pack up my makeup for a vacation. That really shows me my most loved items and how little I need. Skin care is harder for me, I have a bunch of the ordinary’s bottles which are impossible to travel with. But anyways, this is a good exercise especially to get rid of expired and unflattering items! 😊
Totally! We went to the cottage this weekend and I just brought brows and concealer! Go figure!
Great Declutter! As I've gotten older the past few years, my skin and preferences have changed and I've gotten to know my preferences. I have been diligently using up products for a couple of years now (more aggressively this year) and I have decluttered shades and formulas that just aren't doing much for me. I love how the less I have, the more I feel like I have since I don't have 'dead weight' products weighing my makeup stash down. I'm growing more content and satisfied with buying less and less and just keeping the best.
Yes! Makeup is difficult to declutter. 😩 Transitioning to the magnetic palettes (w/ individual shadows) has worked well for me. Next project is a blush palette. 🌸 🌺 🌹

Makeup is so hard for me to get rid of! I have thrown out 3 super old palettes this year that I had pan in multiple shades and the formula had changed and it felt good but at the time it was a hard decision. I have another I am working on till the end of the year and then it will go as well. I have had to come the conclusion that makeup is a sunk cost and since I already spent the money I can't get that money back so I can do with it as I want. It also makes me not want to be wasteful with what I am buying but that's hard. I have had trouble getting rid of lipsticks so I put myself on a no buy and I am rarely tempted to buy one as they take forever to use. Project panning has also helped a lot!

You should look into tubing mascaras if you find it transfers for you - anything drugstore falls off my eyes and tubing mascaras have made and insane difference for me! Not sure if they’re available in Canada but I highly recommend mirinesse and blinc!
Do you watch Hannah Louise Poston? I think you would love her!! She did a no buy a couple years ago and then a low buy, and she post a lot of really thoughtful content about her relationship with her stuff including skincare and makeup.
I am actually working through my collection in a 'slow declutter' right now. I pick out a bunch of makeup from my collection to use for awhile and it either goes back into my drawers or gets decluttered. I have actually gotten rid of 16 items since I started about 2 weeks ago. It's about all I can handle to do it this way. It's so much easier for me if I can use it for awhile before deciding.

Most people just throw away the little bubble on top of the milk sticks the cap usually protect it just fine and its less messy that way.

Ugh - so many of my things went off. I sniffed for an hour - all my RMS started to smell (and coconut oil makes get red bumps anyway) and all my Milk products smelled AWFUL. I haven't bought new makeup in over a year with the exception of mascara and I did replace a favorite Bobbi Brown art stick.
Omg seriously your collection is probably only 1/5 the size of mine (when you originally started) and I struggle to get rid of any of it! I have a combination of whataboutism and overzealousness. I took advantage of working at home to try things I wouldnt wear out. Have a better handle on what I like and what works for me. Bummer that my favorite is blush but wearing a mask all day, I dont wear any makeup currently.
I have to wear a mask all day at work too - so lately it’s been brows, mascara and concealer only. I think working from home is a great opportunity to experiment! That’s awesome!

My makeup collection has gone from filling a full size dresser- Literally- To basically a shoe box size. Except my lips stuff. For some reason I can’t seem so throw away my 8 yr old YSL glosses, etc.... it’s so annoying! Haha

I love the Hourglass Caution mascara, but if you have transfer issues, try the Mac Extended Play Gigablack Lash Mascara. It's a tubing mascara, so it doesn't smudge or flake, but it comes off with warm water. It's what I use on my lower lashes because I don't like to set my concealer. EDIT: Mac is not CF, but there are other tubing mascaras... I think Thrive has a decent one.

I gave anything that was still good to friends, family and co-workers but im told there’s a market for lightly used makeup on poshmark!
I’m keeping what I have until quarantine and WFH life wraps up as a just in case. Then it’s all going in the garbage. I’m replacing about 1/4 of what I previously had and jumping full force into clean products.

I have purchased eyeshadow palettes that others have praised on TH-cam. However, I don’t share that same positive energy toward those palettes. It is extremely silly to keep these palettes. I do know know this on some level. My opinion is the only one that matters when determining which palettes stay in my collection. Why can’t I get rid of them?

I got a lot of feedback to toss the plastic topper and it makes it less messy! So I would say ok to toss it!
My entire makeup collection consists of 1 mascara, 2 eyeliners, and 1 lip balm. That’s it. I live in a hot and humid climate and I would just sweat off all my makeup so I gave it all up. There was no point. It is so freeing!

I’m definitely not a minimalist in fashion. I do capsules only for vacation but I not use a lot of makeup products with the same job ☺️ I have a couple of lipsticks, but I do use other products one as powder and one as the cream version. I have a makeup capsule and I like it 💁🏻♀️
