As a grandson of farmers and ranchers I under stand the grain distribution as we hauled our crops to the elevators during harvest. Buying in bulk saves you money and with a bit of work you can distribute the feed to your livestock as the feeding process is needed in the winter months. Farmers erect the storage bins so they can sell their crops as the market favors the need for them to sell at a price they want. That information on the bushel prices is important to farmers and ranchers so they can have more control on their yearly income. Good video Mike!

I am a city person. Very interesting. Great thumb nail sketch of a feed mill and grain elevator operations. Every time we get a little more of an idea of meat production. Now if we could only get an accurate truth of origin labeling for what we buy at the grocery store.

Most interesting tour. I lived in Fort Worth for many years and wondered what goes on inside one of the large grain elevators of which there are many scattered around the area. And here I am with you and Our Wyoming Life and I finally get a great tour. Very nice. Many thanks.

We bought some feed for our chickens from our local mill . Plus molasses for our dairy cows. We milled our own grains into feed in a hammer mill we had. Then we bought a grinder and made life much easier. W ed also got our field grains to plant and fertilizer from the mill as well. They still ground corn mill for people as well. As a noisy child my nose was in everything but they liked to show me how things were done. I got alot of knowledge from that noisy nose and still have after 64 years! But it was great to learn so much.

I use to drive grain truck for a feed mill here in Minnesota and always liked going inside to watch them make feed. Best job I ever had and liked doing. You talking about the boiler room for the heat, the rest room we had was right in the boiler room and you can imagine the heat in there in the middle of the summer.

A lot of work goes into this and these guys deserve a pat on the back for it for doing the job right. I worked in feed mills in Southern California for 49 years. I estimate I filled, sewed and stacked around 2 million bags in my career. Most of the time I was making bulk feed, though. One man operated 8 grain rollers, and often rolled 1000 tons a day. It was dirty, thankless, and stressful work. This little mill would be a more pleasant place to work.

Local elevator - greatest farmer hangout in the area, except church. As a kid and a 14-18 year old truck driver, I spent many hours in the elevator or mostly in line. That is fun to see the instant dock-age and protein, right in the elevator. It use to be, that it had to be sent to the state lab for those tests. Here in Montana, that was Great Falls. The elevator would fill a 3lb coffee can with grain sample from each truck. Every evening, (example my wifes cousin), she would take off in a Volkswagen with a diesel engine and drive just over 400 miles (by the time she got to each elevator) from Glasgow to Plentywood and back, picking up samples. Those were then transferred to a pickup who then picked up samples on the way to Great Falls. Next day we would know if we got docked for bad grain, usually weed seed, or bonus for protein. The drier the year the higher the protein for spring red, but fewer bushels. Last year on the farm we got an average of 14.4 protein but only 19 bushels per acre.

Where they feed-out cattle, one can hear the mills fire up early in the morning and run for hours. Mike maybe some of your quality cattle end up in my back yard. Within 20 miles of my farm the mills in the local feedlots have to keep about 1/4 million cattle each day content. Often the cattle are shipped in 800 miles just as feed comes in by unit train to the Panhandles and Colorado from the Mid West.

Hi Mike, thanks for taking us along. It is neat to see the inner workings of a old feed mill still steam driven and with hand pulls for all the cylos and bins.
All new and upgraded mills are all automated now, push a button and computer does it all for them. A lot of the corn and grain farmers have gotten their own moisture and protein % meters. Sure helps them with the right time to harvest for quality and higher $ for their product provided mill quality control is met.
