I think its kinda like a foreshadowing. Since Zeref said that he usually wins in those sword fights, he expects to have the same outcome, but seems surprised that Laxus has improved. In other words, since we know that in Mavis and Zeref's past lives, they were in love with each other, Zeref expects to win her over again in the current life. But now that Laxus is in the picture, he might be the one who wins her over in this life. (SORRY IF THIS DIDN'T MAKE ANY SENSE IM NOT GOOD AT EXPLAINING, BUT THIS IS JUST MY THEORY!)

Whereas we have the stereotypical vampire story with zeref. + which is probably why people ship Zeref and Mavis, - it's a typical Wattpad vampire storyline.
