That's me on me mates shoulders down the front....I was 17 n with the woman who became my wife n mother 2 my 2 eldest kids...lived 4 those gigs....big shout 2 all the old clog wearing militia as we were called.....big love y'all from little d
Ya know, I'm fast approaching middle age and was chatting with my 16 year old about what I did when I was 16. So we looked this up to prove it and there I am, front of stage. Marquee, Electric Ballroom, Sunday morning hangovers at Camden Lock buying the latest gear and bootlegs. Stuart Morrow the greatest bass player ever. Those were the days. Wouldn't try the pogo for too long now tho.....
I was lucky enough to see NMA several times in the early days. And their old stuff is still the best. And never fails to arouse the emotions, even after all these years. No Rest - what a classic!
Being from ireland, i was wary of a band named new model army, but once i heard them, i was blown away, centuries of strife forgotten. Of course, with a singer named justin sullivan, had to be yet another musical export from erins isle. 😅😅
He's a top notch Pick/Plectrum Style Bass Player cutting through the mix and sounding more like picking on a guitar. Maybe that's why he was more prominent in the music which allowed Justin to be more expressive with his vocal rather than his riffs. These days they tend to have a second guitarist in the band but it just goes to show you how good an instrument a Bass is and how it often gets overlooked in music. Some are saying best Bassist ever but that is daft because no two Bass Players are the same and each one has their own unique sound and style.
Quite possibly one of the best songs ever written. Wore out the 12" single version back in the day... Since the USA got shafted on getting to see NMA live back then, I am glad this is posted! It is not possible to play this song loud enough or enough times... xxoo Luxe
shit it is my dream to see NMA in the '80s during THAT period............................... for now I ll see them in Berlin like 2 years ago amazing video amazing band amazing audience love simone
Stuart Morrow, what a talent - love this band even though Stuart left long ago - still going strong, catch em live, saw them at Electric Brixton in December - anybody got any footage of Shot 18 they could post?
I have always loved New Model Army's sound, the prominence of the bass being one of the reasons. I've always loved bass heavy music like this. The Subhumans from Canada had a similar sound, prominent bass all over the song. Bliss!! Thank you for posting this wonderful song.
Hi Michael! Just in case you're not tired of hearing it, your uncle was/is a bloody brilliant bass player. The times I've played along to those songs....
Ooooh, fantastic stuff, thanks for posting. This must be shortly before Stuart left, he didn't play with them at Glasto in '85. They just weren't the same after he left, he was such an awesome musician. I was lucky enough to live in Bradford in the early 80s (on the same road as Rob), god knows how many times I saw them gig.
not 'indie' 80's style though Michael ......we hated that shite Smiths; Cure YUK get a life.....don't waste mine! Not U don't get paranoid......LIFE AWAITS U
Si te va KJ, Encho and Sarasa y toda la bola post-punky te van a gustar. Yo arranqué por el disco "The Love of Hopeless Causes" que es una sucesión de temazos# y no tan en la vena* de bases de bajos gruesas* (?)
An absolutely brilliant bass player, not so much for the speed at which his fingers move, more for the absolutely unique vision he had, his bass playing contributing to this band sounding like nothing else on earth.
Stu Morrow was NMA! Most agressive punchy bass playing ever: see the Christian Milita/ Smalltown England vid on TH-cam from, funnily enuf, The Tube circa 1983/4.... if you think your Unc was hero then you know he was/is when you see that. Send him my regards and tell him Smalltown England changed me fro a waster to someone who at least tried! All the best nephew!
Probably heresey to say it Michael cause heaven knows Slade is/was good but you have to wonder from this showing (and others on TH-cam) if it might have been (nb Slade fans MIGHT) because Stuart was such an amazing musician and showman. Whatever, they were never the same w/o him. Hope he s happy now. Cheers.
I used to have this gig on VHS tape - long since knackered and worn out. Anybody got a copy of it on disk or dvd they could send me? It would be very much appreciated! Message me if you can help me out please. Cheers.
Real shame about Rob, he was a great guy! New Model Army as I knew it didn't exist after Morrow left or was sacked, they should have changed their name after. Since that point I never listened to them ever again, have just recently started to listen again to the stuff featuring Morrow. Shame too, Morrow never did anything after this either.
Far king hell. Little Dave from Brixton on shoulders at the start of the song. Was this the "Raw Melody men" or was this the three night stint? My memory is going.
@Imperium Europa NMA have always been contrarian, but to think they're nazis is spectacularly dim. Justin Sullivan's favourite music is RnB and hiphop. Hardly Skrewdriver territory. His long-time collaborator, Joolz, did stuff with Red Wedge. Go on, find me an NMA song that's racist!
Saw them last night in Barcelona. I was a bit disappointed really. I bought their first three singles & LP & then largely lost interest. I saw them in 1986 & they were OK. Testerday I was expecting a few oldies, but there were only four songs I recognised & a lot of new stuff. It's inevitable I suppose, but the older stuff sounds so much better than the newer material. Too much drumming & not enough of the old bass work. I'm just an old git I suppose.
Yes Stuart had a massive influence on me to I spent ages trying to work out his bass lines. This band made me want to go out and busk on the streets of Brum .
Wow, I am just the opposite. Stuart Morrow is the reason why I will never learn to play bass. No way in hell could I ever do one tenth of what he does. Every time I'd pick up a bass I would berate myself by saying to myself, "Man, you ain't no Stuart Morrow. Put the darn bass down." Because of Stuart, trying to play bass would be a blow to my ego every time I picked that bass up. So I simply became a guitar player.
Brilliant band, no mobile phones filming the gig, people living the music & singing the words along with the band!
That's me on me mates shoulders down the front....I was 17 n with the woman who became my wife n mother 2 my 2 eldest kids...lived 4 those gigs....big shout 2 all the old clog wearing militia as we were called.....big love y'all from little d
This is, and forever shall be, the best lineup for New Model Army. Sullivan, Morrow, and Heaton were a force.
Nope.
Yeah for sure
Agreed
BASS GUITAR AS A SOLOING LEAD INSTRUMENT...PRETTY RARE AND DELICIOUS....
NMA RULES...NO REST 4 THE VICKED ONES...
Such an underrated bass player…

Lead bass playing there. He was bloody amasing.

They were great, saw them several times 84-89, the most intimate at The Solemn Bar Manchester Uni with Border Incident. 90 people there.

Just played this to my 15 year old son and sang all the words to him.... I think I've shocked him.... And I was there.
Quite possibly one of the best songs ever written. Wore out the 12" single version back in the day... Since the USA got shafted on getting to see NMA live back then, I am glad this is posted! It is not possible to play this song loud enough or enough times... xxoo Luxe

Best rock bassist England ever produced.
Great moment at 4:13
Hi Michael! Just in case you're not tired of hearing it, your uncle was/is a bloody brilliant bass player. The times I've played along to those songs....
No Rest is still one of the best tracks ever.
Robert Charles Heaton (6 July 1961 - 4 November 2004) was an English musician best known as the drummer in the English rock band New Model Army (NMA).
Supported them at Sunderland Poly. Fucking love them to bits.
Twisting in our sweat ...bless

Very thanks for uploading this vid. Great. NMA is independent, still.

Fancied some NMA tonight - saw them live once 92 ish, North East England. A true dynamite on stage. :)
Smash the fascists. ;)
true post punk!
Far king hell. Little Dave from Brixton on shoulders at the start of the song. Was this the "Raw Melody men" or was this the three night stint? My memory is going.
Is it that we were eating, while other people were starving?
Is this our crime?
Me too LOL!
WHY DID STUART MORROW LEAVE NMA?
PS Michael, why did you Uncle leave the band when he did?
saw them in denmark,
two/ three guitars?, key boards?
sort it out Justin.
Chris Overs.
What happened to vocalist's tooth?

That explains the tooth

He was better looking , Had more charisma, better stage presence so obviously Stu had to go, hey Joolz!
I def think youve got something there ! 🤷♂️
👍🏴
Sweaty gig
My uncle Stuart
My best regards for both of you! I love his bass lines and I love NMA, I've been following their work for 25 years!
Michael Morrow he's one reason I learned to play the bass! Stuart and Geezer Butler!! Cheers Michael, you got a real cool uncle!
I'm sure I met him Michael???....Years ago in Derby
Yes Stuart had a massive influence on me to I spent ages trying to work out his bass lines. This band made me want to go out and busk on the streets of Brum .
