    While I agree that Cersei's new queen look isn't anywhere near as pretty as her previous looks, I think the lack of color and beautiful hairstyles works within the story. Before season 6, Cersei had to use her beauty to manipulate powerful men. Now she is in charge. She doesn't need her looks anymore. Her style is also intentionally masculine and an homage to Tywin, because Westeros is a society that associates femininity with weakness. The biggest complaints that I have with the new look are that the more structured dresses make the fit issues a lot more obvious and that a lot of the details on the black dresses get lost because of the dark lighting (though this was a problem for all of the characters in season 7).

      It wouldn’t surprise me if they reused the wig Harry Lloyd wore when he played Viserys Targaryen and put it on Wilf Scolding who played Rhaegar Targaryen.
      The white wig was probably made based on Harry Lloyd’s head shape and did what they could to make it passably fit on Wilf Scolding.
      Wigs are very expensive and if they used real human silver white hair then it must have been almost cost prohibitively expensive. It wouldn’t make sense to make a whole new wig for a character that appears only briefly in one episode.

    I liked the choice to have Cersei constantly wearing black to show the mourning of her children, something women often did in history and would sometimes keep up for years, but I wish the actual dresses were more historical looking. The one she wears when the Great Sept blows up is good but the others look too modern.

    I wouldn't say that Bernardette copied Cersei, but I think Cersei made them wear that exact attire (all the handmaidens) and also made them cut their hair out of jealousy. She had her hair cut so she probably minded the women she finds to be inferior to have nice full grown hair.

    • @Asaki44

      I disagree. Cersei has had this haircut for a very long time by her own choice. Don't you think it'd grow back, at least to her shoulders, during the last seasons? She just didn't want to look feminine and soft anymore. And the maids probably just followed her looks in order not to be fired for looking like a reminder of her past. Maids were always like mirrors to their queens.

    I always feel like the Tarly's are meant to represent unfashionable people. Yes, given the timeperiod, there should be all of these lovely gowns, but there are still going to be fashionably inept people. I feel like the Tarly's are supposed to represent that. Especially considering they are such a side family. Randall acts like they're such a big important family and for their area they are, but in terms of the big families, they're not even really talked about.

      I was thinking that you could have the boiled leather ovr the outer part of your arms and legs, while the inner part is uncovered and thus can catch a breeze. As someone raised, and still living in Houston, I wouldn't like the idea of having to wear that though -- but motorcyclists wear protective clothing in our environment in the summer. They're probably very miserable.
      On the other hand, if you cover just the outer parts of your arms and legs, your most vulnerable arteries will be unprotected from a quick slide of a blade.

(The exception being Dany's white fur Winterfell outfit.) It just made it less enjoyable on the costume front because we already have so many warrior characters. It made it seem like the definition of character growth was becoming more warlike and gloomy.

      It's because it is actually Dany's cast off. of COURSE it's not going to fit properly! Missandei is a rather recently freed slave without an income beyond what is gifted to her by Dany.... who has ALSO been struggling financially because of the literal horde she has at her back. Nice clothing for anyone other than the Queen...? Not really a financial priority compared to feeding the horde of soldiers + buying ships + maintaining arms and armor.

I had heard other people make fun of it, calling her "Taquito Queen" and stuff like that, but it just seemed like one of those extravagant type of renaissance dresses to me. And I agree that Natalie Dormer pulled it off as well as you can, which is probably the biggest reason I never thought much of it.

    In terms of design, Cersei's dragonpit dress is bad but in terms of Cersei's character it's perfect. Cersei has always feel trapped by the limits her gender puts on her in Westeros and thus the chainmail look is very similar to dresses she has worn before with armour highlights, in order to allow herself to wear the armour in her own way.

    Missandei's pants are similar/the same as the ones Dany wore under previous tunics. She is wearing cast offs that are awkwardly fit because it fits her characterization. She is a recently freed slave wearing cast offs because Dany has other financial priorities than making sure one of her advisers is as well dressed as the Queen. She has a horde to feed, ships to pay for and maintain, arms and armor for an entire ARMY to maintain... new silks for anyone other than Danaerys isn't really a priority, and are only a priority for Dany because 1: she needs to look imposing, and 2: post-conquering of various Free Cities, she has the time to pick off and alter fashions that exist in the city already.
    Regardless of whether the harness piece is the literal same as Dany wore, it's rather obviously MEANT to be the same piece, or Missandei taking on Dany's choices out of either respect or hero worship. You can see her throughout the seasons adjusting her own style as Dany changes hers; whether from a sense of "we need to look cohesive as members of her court" or that same sense of idealization and idolatry that a lot of the Essos characters see her with.
    Cersei is in mourning for her children, and preparing for war. She's also trying to emulate Tywin now that she thinks she's proven her power by destroying the Sept. It could have been done better, definitely, but in a kingdom that equates femininity with weakness, it makes sense that she would masculinize herself as much as possible AND wear traditional mourning colors with understated jewelry. She doesn't need to content herself with flash and setting trends because her useless husband is a drunken lech. She's consolidated her power, and even if the people now despise her, well hey she has the Red Keep, AND the reanimated zombie-soldier on her side. She has nothing left to lose, so why would she dress as if she does?
    The felt wool and chainmail dress was abysmal, I will give you that. They should have done more about continuity and the hemline. But I can't fault the creators for the rest of it. It suits the narrative.
    Dorne was horrific, both in style and execution. This series has NO respect for Dorne, or the characters that come from that country, even going as far back as Oberyn's introduction. His coat was beautifully patterned, but there were still issues with his and his consort's clothing. The same fit and puckering issues, the same colors and fabric choices... the same afterthought kind of attention to their costumes was a major disappointment. This is just more of the same.
    If Bernadette has been with Cersei from the beginning, then looking at master-servant relationships: "your shame is my shame." They shaved Cersei's head. If Bernadette shaved hers in solidarity, it would look pretty similar at the same point, yeah? Particularly if she is Cersei's body servant and the one closest to the queen, she isn't going to be showing off if the Queen isn't. That way lies insult and rather severe punishment for reaching beyond her station. If the Queen is in unrelieved black without embellishment, guess what? Servants got to be servantlike. It fits thematically.
    Greyscale Dress: see what I said about Cersei above... also definitely agree about the disease-correlation.
    Sandsnakes: See what I said about Dorne. The harnesses; as a leatherworker; offend me. They look like woven belts from the 60s-70s era, and the warping just reinforces the idea that they found them at a thrift store and cut them to size.
    House Tarly is not and never really was a major player in Westerosi politics. They're a secondary or tertiary house at best, and have served other Great Houses historically. It would make sense that they don't quite have the funding to pull out real Southern fashions, and that their sense of taste wouldn't be quite as refined as that of King's Landing, Highgarden, or some of the more high-powered House capitols. YES the dress is hideous. It's supposed to be.
    Tarly "Fashion": See above... and then also consider how long Westeros has been at war. Consider that House Tarly has hardly any political power and the power they DO have is mostly gleaned because who else is even left at this point? Yes they should have been made on different patterning because it's an unholy amalgam of 1980s and Regency dress that does NOT look well together, but there's reasons for the fabric choices that go beyond "hey we ran out of time uh uh, This and THAT hurry up we have to shoot in three hours."
    Armor: see everything I've said about Dorne. The entire section of the show feels like a pasted-on afterthought and they changed so much of the plot surrounding Dorne that it's hardly recognizable even to fans of the books. More so than other parts of the story. (*Where the hell is Lady Stoneheart? Seriously?*)
    Margaery's Dress: I didn't see the homage to McQueen. I saw an overly structured, poorly fashioned attempt at brocade armor that, while it might suit the character in the moment, detracted from its surroundings and didn't mesh at all even with other costumes from Highgarden.

    I just have to point out that ancient Greek bronze breastplates weren't flat: they were made to look like a naked torso, including nipples. So, actually the idea of putting nipples on armor is neither new nor done just to be sexy. And yes, it's been done on men's armor. The idea was to make the warriors look like they were made of bronze, it was a type of psychological warfare. The Sand Snakes' armor would be justified with the same reasoning: it makes her look like she has snakelike skin. The fact that the armor molds closely to her body helps maintain that illusion. Still, you're definitely right about not having protection from poison. A coat-of-plates style thing (with metal on the inside protected from the sun's heat by cloth which also helps cushion against blunt force trauma) would probably have been a better choice for the Sand Snakes.

    • @blondthief

      Yes sculpted armor existed and looked good, but was flat with some details, full breasts is like advertising 'here's the slope to my heart please stab me' because the round shape of the breast would guide a sword to your center chest.

    • @sophiejones7727
      @sophiejones7727 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ok, I was talking about nipples you are talking about breasts. not the same thing, nipples are the little things on the ends of breasts. breasts with cleavage in the middle, yes, would be dumb. nipples on armor however is not as stupid as the presenter indicated it was. The armor could have a semi-sculpted breast on each side with no cleavage in the center as if it was a shirt stretched over the breasts, and still have nipples for psychological effect without sacrificing protection. If one was actually thinking about how a woman would design her armor.

    • @blondthief
      @blondthief 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I know the difference between nipples and breasts, however, the overall point is that, they literally took a mold of her chest and turned it into armor, nipples and all. The thing I'm saying is the whole 'molds close to the body' would really be more of a hindrance, if hit hard enough your own armor would injure you and just leads swords to the center. Even a stretched t-shirt effect would put a ridge against the rib cage that if hit could hurt the wearer. You want a good chest plate to not have any edges or ridges and appear to be one uniform piece of metal, if I had to wear something into combat I would want it to not curve around my chest at all to better protect my heart and vital organs.
      Also the naked torso of Greek armor were less 'psychological warfar' and more 'heroic nudity of the Olympics' because of honor and all that jazz.

    • @sophiejones7727
      @sophiejones7727 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      blondthief
      Ok, first of all: I'm not talking about something that's closely molded nor am I talking about something that is worn by itself, since no piece of armor would ever be worn by itself. The best protection against blunt force trauma is your undergarment: in ancient times they used tightly stitched layered linen, in medieval times it was quilting, and in modern times we use kevlar. The principle behind these garments is the same: absorb and spread out kinetic energy so that no single area of the body is hit to hard. It's just a question of how well the material works. Any metal breastplate is a potential danger to the wearer if they take a hard hit: which is why these undergarments are mandatory when wearing metal armor.
      secondly: the armor in question is leather, so that's a moot point. Rawhide is tough enough to serve as armor and retains a shape that it's molded into, especially if you're facing mostly enemies using bronze weapons, but it's still flexible enough to cushion an impact.
      thirdly: what you just described *is* psychological warfare. Psychological warfare is anything that is intended to demoralize the enemy or to change the behavior of your own troops. The term "ancient Greece" covers a period of about 2,000 years. By classical times, you're correct: it was mainly a matter of tradition and honor. But in the more superstitious era when this design was actually invented: it was intended to make the men look and feel superhuman, and thus to take more risks as they fought.

    Breast shapes in working armour are frankly dangerous for the user. No true seasoned warrior would risk amour that would guide the blade over and over to the same place weakening it???
    Boob armour should only be used for decorative or ceremonial amour. Having outlandish and overly sexy general outfits is fine in fantasy (if overdone and tiring, also no woman 'high born' would flaunt her body), but it breaks your immersion when something meant to serve a function like safety actually puts the wearer in danger.
    Boobs for boob's sake is a stupid choice in warriors meant to appear skilful, dangerous and a serious opponent in battle.

    • @ismata3274
      @ismata3274 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Very good point, lethally dangerous indeed. 👍
      My first concern was arrows, no matter how fast and agile sandsnakes are, i dont think they can outrun arrows so,
      imagine arrows coming your way and your armour not letting them slide sideways etc. but direct them right to your heart. One or two -might? posibly?- not cause a problem, that is if your -definitely nonexistent here- padding does somehow absorb the impact. After that you re down.
      Battleaxe etc.. blunt force using weapons are the real concern but they -might?- outrun those in this universe i guess. 🤷‍♀️

    • @LadyLocket
      @LadyLocket 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Ism Ata: Your right, the whole outfit is stupid for more than one reason. To expand on your point regarding arrows, the enemy only has to aim for the exposed shoulder joint to incapacitate the fighter. If she can not use her arm she can not use her weapon, plus the fast bleed out around joints. No one would view these fighters as anything other than silly people playing dress up, not an opponent to be respected and cautious of.
      As a working piece it's laughable but even as a ceremonial piece is wasted, if you can afford two pieces of armour, one of which is only for show, you would want to make sure it's impressive. Just look at real historical show armour its designed to be lighter, very showy and signal status, not protect.

      Although female armour which includes round breast cups have been used historically for the comfort of the wearer (usually only the wealthier armies), usually lined with cloth or clothing worn underneath, a flat chest piece (while ideal for contact) isn't always practical for wearing (not all bodies made the same after all).Also I disagree that wearing a clear body shape is necessarily 'sexual' or distracting to the function of the armour, its no one characters fault that the fantasy genre has overused the 'sexy female warrior' trope.

      Historically people have worn black/bleak colours in great numbers during hard times (lack of money/transport when resources have been precious regarding war), but also kingdoms judge fashion based on their ruler, like how everyone used to wear wigs and then stopped, it was a kings decision what was in and out of fashion. Here even though Jon Snow isn't a fashionable king he does wear black (thematically and by virtue of his previous job) and Cersei after everything she's been through also makes sense that she would take to black. I'm not saying its intentional in GoT or canon but it would be interesting if the show had bothered to consider the 'changing climate' under each ruler.

      LOL...the sci-fi film world has a history of going to "non-clothing" fabrics for costuming. I saw a documentary about the original Star Trek series in the 60's...one of the actors said that the costumes they wore in a scene where they were meant to be wearing radiation suits were made out of....PLACEMATS...yes, someone was tasked w/the job of stitching together dozens of silver placemats to make those costumes for 2-3 actors for a scene that took only a few minutes of screen time. Nothing has changed much from then: Production budget x shooting time = get it done with whatever is cheapest & easiest LOL. The costume & design industry in general should be worried that CGI technology won't replace their skills entirely (at least for filming).

    Gilly (sounds like fish "Gill"-EE) her first couple of dresses were ugly and ill-fitting because they were not meant for her, they were on loan from the family so she could have something clean and fresh to wear to dinner and create as good of a first impression on the old Tarly Codger (he really was a miserable cuss). I would like to see Gilly in something southern that fit her properly.

    Arya's season 7 costume (the one that was an homage to Ned) didn't resonate with me. I felt that they played too much into her tomboy side and not enough into the side of her that supposedly shows itself in the books later on. Also, her hair is really tragic in it. • @LeanneLukacs

    In my opinion, some of the ugliest costumes were the style of dresses worn by Lysa and the women of the Vale. But for as ugly as they were, at least thought was put into them, they weren't lazily thrown together like the Tarly dresses seem to have been. To me, the Tarly dresses were boring, uncreative, and cheap-looking, which is ultimately worse than being well-constructed and finely detailed but kind of an eyesore (to me, anyway, I just really hate those Vale dresses). At least with the Vale costumes, they took a risk and created a unique style that added to the flavor of the setting.
    Honestly, I never actually noticed the "nipple armor," and somehow missed out on the controversy over it. I guess while watching those scenes I was just too distracted by how terrible everything else to do with the Sand Snakes was to pay much attention to how poor the costume choices were.
    I think the costumes of season 7 (and a few from season 6) are pretty representative of the problems with GOT as a whole as of recently. Like this last season, a lot of them were rushed and not as well planned out, and tended to play it safe without taking risks. I did like a few of them--Dany's and Sansa's styles are some of my favorites--but even among the costumes I did like a lot of them looked too... same-y. Sansa seems to only have one dress and a lot of times it feels the same way with Dany. Not to mention, all the color seems to have been drained out of the costumes; everyone, EVERYONE dresses in black and gray now because apparently it needs to be hammered home that things are dark and serious now... even though they've always been. Yes, I get that with certain characters it feels more appropriate to dress them in dark colors, and with the changing seasons bright colors may seem too spring-like, but some variety would be appreciated.

    • @Costume_CO
      @Costume_CO  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is awesome! Agree whole-heartedly. I think that the Vale are pretty ugly too, and I did a small analysis of them, as you said they are very well made and the fabrics are lovely if you look closely. Lysa's hair is just awful too. Michele does create a distinctive region for them, and I guess that is why me and the others in the poll didn't address it as much.
      Totally on board with what you are saying about season 7. Have said this many times. If I had said half of what I was thinking, I would be raked over the coals even more than I am for this somewhat dumbed down video. Thanks again for commenting. :)

    I would ask that you create a Worst Wigs of Westeros video. Men's toupees included, but not practical FX (like the Hound's scarred pate). We live in a time of horrible wigs on everyone on tv and in movies. They deserve to be celebrated.
    You could probably fit Dany in that list at least twice.
    The absolute worst costume in the series was Clive Russell's ersatz leather scale mail. You could tell it was made out of soft leather and that it curled up; rather than small metal or stiff boiled leather scales used in protective armor. Soft leather armor wouldn't protect you from anything. Oh well, my favorite character...
    Also, those long armored split skirts that Jon and Arya are wearing - they look like some kind of horse armor, not something that you'd be walking around a castle wearing.
    We liked the video.

But that texture, perfection and volume in her curls are just unrealistic. I know people love Daenerys' hair but I prefer the way they styled her back in season 1. It looked styled and wavy but in a natural way with the means they would have had in a medieval-ish setting. You know, without being so absurdly perfect and defined and with some frizziness going on. It looked pretty af in my opinion.

The pants though are way too distracting, I remember being unable to look aware from them when she was telling Dany about her and Grey Worm hooking up as they went to meet up with Jon on the beach. If they had lowered the hem line of the coat a bit it would have been a lot better.
    As for Tyene's "armor", well anything Dornish that's not Ellaria or Oberyn is less than perfect. And one can make the armor sexy while also protective. I'm getting an idea for one right now.

    Interesting how we project our own experiences onto the show. I assumed that the Tarley dresses were a deliberate move. This family is extremely patriarchal and traditional (even for GoT) and I assumed Papa Tarley would want his little women in the most girly, poufy dresses around. What's more whimsical than Laura Ashley? They're also not a particularly wealthy family, so I assume that a lot of their dresses would have been sewn at home as opposed to the two Queens who have endless funds for tailoring. Once again, I also don't think Papa Tarley would've wasted money on "women things". I thought they were great for the show (but only for the show. They're so ugly).

    My two problems with the season 7 costumes are that 1. everyone is wearing high collared black outfits, no diversity, little house colours, 2. Dorne and King's Landing are supposed to be really hot, so hot that people would still be sweating wearing simple cotton shifts and now they're all fine wearing black layers? Winter might have come but not that much, people are forgetting that Winterfell would have summer snows whereas the Stormlands and Crownlands would have oppressive heat and summer storms. Massive difference in temperature and climate.

    I think the Tarly dresses might have also been a slight play on a joke the producers played on the actor who plays Sam. At one point they convinced the actor to wear a ridiculous costume, telling him that's how his family dressed. The costume included a monstrous cod piece, horrible hat and outrageous colors, think Henry VIII meets swap meet. The photo shows how miserable he looked wearing it.

      Yes, I saw that. It was hilarious - but it never made it on screen!

    I get it that they were going for a new age in S7 costumes, but it feels like they jumped 200 years in the future.
