i recently got one as a baby as well. He had zero fins, he was super skinny. He reminded me of a little puffer almost because his eyes popped so much. The chick at the pet store had to ask me a second time if i wanted to chance him because of his state, but he had already won my heart over with his extremly goofy looks. Fast forward a couple months and he looks like a different fish entirely with his fins back and healthy weight, he will always be that goofy little baby to me though.❤️

I love this fish!! I have two in a 125gal, I got both of them as tiny babies. I talk to my fish a lot, but these particular fish seem to love being talked to. They wiggle around and stay with their faces at the glass when I talk to them. They're truly a fun fish to mother. I wonder though, do you know how to tell males from females? My two seem to get along fine and hang out together in the tank. Thanks for sharing, I couldn't agree more with your vlog, they're a great addition to the tank!

    S. acanthomias get to about 20", making it the largest of the Synodontis species, and over twice the size of S. eupterus. Many Synodontis look similiar at small sizes (grey fish/dark grey dots) and it is often not until 3-5 years you get a good idea of what they really are. Of course the channel, redtail, goonch, Mekong among many others are true monster catfish.

You've got a nice, healthy looking juvenile featherfin there! He appears very well cared for and content.
I was lucky enough to have four of these awesome catfish in a 90 gallon tank a few years back (broke my heart when I had to re-home them before moving to an apartment).
I'd like to say a few things I learned from keeping these wonderful guys, if I may: They are surprisingly social, and do well around almost any other fish that won't fit in their mouths. My four (named Moe, Larry, Curly, and Shemp, of course) would spend hours chasing each other around the tank, but they never hurt each other in any way. They honestly appeared to be having fun. They also didn't hurt any of my other fish, some of which were quite small (such as Corydoras and Yoyo Loaches). They ate anything I gave them, including some more meaty type of foods. Bloodworms were their favorite food, as far as I could tell, but I gave them a wide variety of foods and they were always "fat and happy". They remain my favorite fish, though clown loaches are a close second.
I will respectfully disagree with you about them being among the largest catfish. In my experience and research, full grown featherfins in captivity tend to top out around 7 to 8 inches (17 to 20 cm), though they can get a bit larger in the wild. They grow very quickly, reaching adult size in under a year in my case, with the exception of Shemp who was a rescue from a place that didn't feed him properly (a skinny featherfin is a sad sight indeed). With this in mind, anyone who wants to get one (or better yet, a small group) of these great fish should probably not do so before establishing a tank large enough to house them as adults. I made this mistake myself and started Moe off in a 20 gallon tank (75L). As mentioned in the video, 50 gallons is a decent minimum, though I recommend a 4 foot long tank (such as a 55g, 75g, or 90g) because these fish love to swim around and explore constantly. Also, these fish have VERY long lifespans, sometimes 20 years or more. Anyone wanting to keep featherfins should be aware and plan for this.
I noticed one comment asking about how to tell males and females apart. In my experience, there is very little visible sexual dimorphism, and my research on the subject agrees with that. However, I've read that the females tend to be a bit larger and broader as adults. Our biggest featherfin was Moe, who we figured was probably a female. She had the most personality of the four, and seemed to be the dominant featherfin, though as I mentioned before there was no actual violence, just chasing.

N1RKW I had one with fish as small as neon tetras and it still didn’t try to go after them This fish will attack other fish but only out of defense Spinning around as fast as they can trying to sting whatever fish was coming after it with it’s horns That’s why I named mine Spinner💯🌱🐠💙🔥

      @@mikefisher4834 - I like the name choice!
My featherfins barely even seemed to notice the other fish in the tank with them, but the worst that came of that was occasionally a corydoras would get run over (harmlessly). I kept mine in a community tank, so there weren't any aggressive fish with the catfish. I tried keeping them with cichlids for a short time, but they seemed to thrive better among "friendlier" fish. I miss those awesome catfish and hope I can keep them again someday.

I've just brought home two of these.
The bigger one keeps chasing the slightly smaller one and this behaviour is stressing the other fish in the tank.
Apparently you should only keep one in a tank?
I don't know what to do now.

Great video, I just had a question. So i have a synodontis schall, which u got from my LFS and said that someone had donated it to them. I had to do tons of research and the lfs didnt know anything about the catfish. Are these catfish rare or something in the US because I dont see anyone selling it.

i just cannot get the pronunciation of these fish species. Nice vid manI think it will nibble on small fish at nights. If the fish can hold in its mouth dont put it in the tank, as with all catfish even the cories. You will not see. remember catfish are nocturnal for most parts.
