I grew up in zamboanga at la purisima is part of my life. Never been back for 20 years and counting and what i really noticed and what is shocking to me is the large amount of girls wearing the muslim veil. Like dati walang nagsusuot ng ganung kahaba ng veil tapos konting konti lang ngayon parang andami na. Lumolobo na ba ang muslim population ng zamboanga?
matagal na pong maraming muslim sa zamboanga city. Sta. Barbara, sta. catalina, rio hondo,mariki, baliwasan seaside and campo islam. These barangays are muslim dominated commnunities. suterville, sinunuc, some parts of san roque and further west like ayala also has alot of muslims. But the formerly mentioned barangays near downtown have always been a muslim community. I don't know saan po kayo nung mga panahon na un pero my mother has been in zamboanga city since the 80s although muslim family kami, we are rooted from Zamboanga del Norte not in the southern islands bago kami tumira sa ZC. Matagal ng maraming muslim sa zamboanga kahit mga nag aaral sa ateneo at wmsu. Siguro mejo nabawasan na ung prejudice sa mga muslim kaya mejo nakakagala na ung iba but to say ba dumami na sila, matagal ng maraming muslim. And hindi gaya ng iniisip ng karamihan na illiterate. Alot of muslim doctors in general hospital. Muslim professors as well in the college of engineering. Mga chavacano na hindi pure, i.e., from visayan decent, sila pa ung prejudice sa mga muslim. 2017 nag apply ako driver's license for my SUV ang sabi ng officer sa LTO sakn bawal daw ung hindi marunong magbasa na mag apply lisensya hahaha he doesn't know licensed engineer ako pero sinakyan ko na lang ugali nya and perfected the score sa written exam and registered my SUV. Ganun po mga chavacano but not all since ung mga pure naman tlga like some of my friends di sila ganun. siguro ung mga hindi aware sa reality na maraming successful na muslim still dwell sa idea na dangerous ang mga muslim. mas dangerous ang ignorance. My mother, a product of ateneo and even has a master's degree couldn't even find a decent job during her time because of that prejudice. Thank God she realized walang kwentang magwork sa pilipinas sa baba ng sahod and how unfair the system is. So to speak na parang alien ang mga muslim sa zamboanga city is a form of ignorance.
