Brood War is a series of broken units that miraculously strike a workable balance.
Yes after a bunch of patches, 1.0 StarCraft was stupidly imbalanced
Yea well, it's balanced because your unit will somehow path through the enemy base because they don't know how to walk up the cliff.
Only because of maps
Cause flying banelings be scary
It’s not even close to flying banelings . If you had the scourge you probably wouldn’t have the corrupter.
Not to mention microing away from scourge would be easy between medivac boosts and prism speed etc.
I think the only reason banelings are scary is because they don’t do friendly fire
Oh, so like a widow mine
Mengsk shouldve fried the critter with his funky, electric alien rock.
That’s one of the things I loved about SC 1. There were relatively cheap counters to big expensive units. Don’t see that as much in SC2.
And good reason
*Marines have entered the chat.
Well i mean as zerg i go zerglings alot. 50 minerals 2 units with either broodlords or vipers. Now i got an army that is cheap with some good late tier stuff but if used correctly can swallow expensive armies
How about viper snipe mothership?
And then you have units in broodwar like the scout.
Turning speed, angle and every little variable like this are accessible in the editor. The broodlord and carrier are good examples of such capacity. They maybe didn't find a satisfying way to do it that would fit the unit from sc1. A bit like Stalker vs Dragoon
Good points about scourge being kiteable
Zerg players watching their entire supply got vaporized by funny looking bats: 👁️👄👁️
They had them in the campaign 😂
These all seem like fixable problems.
Scourge was like a flying banelings
Banelings dealt splash damage and bonus vs certain unit types (light), neither of which scourge had, but yes they are both kamikaze units.
Broodlord should be able to switch shooting scorge to their usual. Scorge could time out like the ground attack
That sounds way too OP. It could work, but only if the ground attack was weakened accordingly.
Broodlords being weaker vs ground in the past wouldn't have worked, but ever since ranged lurkers came out, Vipers, and even Swarm Hosts, it's made it more viable.
I always thought that Scourge were useless because well, there are better anti air options than literally Banelings that can fly.
They could have totally added Scourge to SC2 though, with some tweaks to AI and stats. For example, they could have kept the overkill feature. They just didn't need to have them because the Corrupter and Viper had Zerg covered..
I think in the lore Kerrigan also lost the DNA to making Scourge which is why they aren't in SC2 and before anyone mentions Wings of Liberty, remember that the Zerg was heavily exterminated by the time Jim eventually transformed Kerrigan back into her human form meaning the DNA for the Scourge was likely destroyed since while Jim took one area the Dominion would take the other.
@@cursedhawkins1305 You have a good point! I just really want to see Scourge in SC2.
I honestly don't really see how AI tweaks could help? Like, I'm pretty sure air AI in SC2 is very straight forward. The biggest problem probably was that splash damage would be too op because air units tend to clump up extremely easily, which is why we generally don't have any anti air attacks with good damage, like Liberator and Thor are the only ones that come to mind, and their splash is tiny. Imagine a baneling level explosion, 10 of these could annihilate any air army pretty much independent of size
@@hanneswiggenhorn2023 Except the argument of "air units tend to clump up extremely easily" can be used for SC1 and SC1 did have the Scourge if anything SC1 made it so air units couldn't try to clump up as much as they do in SC2 by having them move each other around if they got too close.
I seen a mod once that makes scourge just flying zerglings. Probably could have been nice.
What a shame I loved that unit
If they didn't remove the scourge, i wont be struggling againts tempest rushes
Just get Corruptors? They are very good against Tempests, and Carriers.
@@TheRogueminator you cant really mass them againt a skytoss
I loved using hydras to go after Carriers that would back away and get absolutely borked by 250 minerals worth of Scourges.
engagement
Basically are flying banelings,
where was the challenge?
Sckee sckee sckee
LOL Starcraft 2 did not have more small air harass than Starcraft 1. Starcraft 1 had a crazy amount of small air harass. Heck every race in the game had core strategies revolving around it, and it was pretty much a required strategy to use in any 3 or more game set.
Scourge weren't in SC2 because they don't have good transitive balance (good counters, particularly for protoss and zerg who don't have fast-firing cheap units that can take down scourge easily). They're too one-dimensional.
They can easily add a explosion damage delay like paracitic bomb so it works like the sc1 unit. But they decides not to make it easier to control.
So basically what you're saying is that instead of introducing scourges and balancing them, they let Zerg have garbage anti-air instead, to the point where you can't punish drops unless you invest in super expensive units (Mutas).
Yeah, sounds like something Blizzard would do. Worst company in terms of balancing gameplay by far.
Bw way better
super interesting and concise, thank you, love SC tidbits
People still play starcraft 2.
It's a great game and it's free if you want to try it out!
