The recordings made on these AIWA decks are stellar, they will blow out of the water 99.9 % of the best cassette decks ever made, that is how good these decks are. I have currently a collection of 22 high-end cassette decks (and Growing) and my AIWA AD-F770 and AIWA AD-F990, even when compared to my best Nakamichi, Harman Kardon, Revox, Sony ES, NAD, Pioneer Elite, Denon, Teac, Yamaha, Onkyo Integra, JVC, Akai, BIC, etc. The recording are just superior to anything I own, even though I own just top of the line Cassette decks. They are not only unique looking, but also Unique recorders/Players, the cassettes that you record on these decks will sound good on any other deck, as long as the heads are properly alligned and all the electronics and mechanical parts are working correctly! The only downside of these brilliant decks is servicing them, it is a challenge even to the best technicians out there!
Unfortunately these and the ADF-770 had a problem auto tuning TDK MA, MA-X and MA-XG tapes as the frequency response of these tapes is right on the edge of the available window. I ended up changing my 770 for a Denon DRM33HX. I could manually tune as I wished, but I have now purchased another ADF-770 just as decoration because I think it is the best looking cassette deck ever made, and the level meters are just beautiful. (I have a Nakamichi Dragon as my main machine)
I had the same tuning problem with an AD-F770 back in 1985. It would consistently fail to tune Metal tapes, which was what I was going to be recording onto exclusively. Aiwa service could not sort the problem out. Eventually I had a refund and bought a Denon DR-M 770 which had manual bias. That worked better and made awesome recordings that are still awesome today.
You should have used high quality chrome tapes like TDK SA-X or Maxell XLII-S, they sound amaizing and better that the average metal tape. You can't compare a good tape deck like Denon to these high end AIWA beasts!
this Aiwa is still amazing! the 80s is quite a decade of great vintage audio technics 30 years later and this cassette deck is as good as 30 years ago
Non li fanno più capolavori così!

I never had a problem with mine auto-tuning to any of these cassettes you mentioned!
Bonito Tape Deck.
Having a high quality cassette deck what are you trying to do?
