Wow. Tim, I must say how sad I am that your display is closing, I have tears in my eyes.
I first saw your TV program when I was a young lad back in the late 80’s here in Australia, taped them on VHS, and watched them over and over for many years.
When my wife and I were in the UK in 2006 we visited your display at the Science Museum, and I have a lovely photo of my wife playing the ‘Pong’ video game.
Your programs were a big part of keeping me interested in how things work, which has been integral to my career and my life in general, building and fixing stuff, and even developing and manufacturing products.
29 years is a huge length of time for an exhibit to run at a museum, you should be very proud.

When I was a child this was one of my favourite parts of the museum. I absolutely loved the burglar alarm and trying to dodge the light beams, messing with the TV using magnets, flushing the loo and giggling at my mum's disapproving expression... This was by far the most interactive exhibit (well, aside from the Launchpad), and although it had become very dated and a bit run-down in recent years, it will be missed. Thanks for making such a memorable exhibit :)

Today your exhibit was consistently full of people of all ages laughing, pointing, interacting and talking. It's still the best, most joyous and inspiring part of the science museum. Household science and engineering is where all of our fascinations with the world start and this part of the museum has inspired people to see the things around them in a whole different light for nearly 30 years. Thank you for inspiring so many people whilst also bringing so much laughter into into the world.

For many years, for me, a visit to the Science Museum has included a pilgrimage to the basement for the Secret Life of the Home. The crank operated freezer, the see-through loo, with the turd return cup. And the manual washing machine. Such a joy to behold from the last two decades of visiting.

It's a shame that something like this can't find a permanent home somewhere to spur young minds to be the inventors of the future. They gave me hope towards the last years of "TV and Radio Servicing college" in 1988 and I ended up at Sony, then onto a long career in electronics. Thank you. Ast...

The "Tech Museum" in San Jose, California, aka Silicon Valley, went through a similar update process recently. Replaced were many authentic prototypes and displays depicting semiconductor development and other innovations that enabled today's tech driven world.
The beloved stories and artifacts that embodied the garage inventor spirit of Hewlett and Packard have been summarized by iconic black turtleneck sweaters and simplistic yet impenetrable packaging that thwarts the hardware hacking that enabled high technology in the first place.
All that matters now are branding and corporate image propping up share value.

At the top of the results was an ad for Etsy, with a photo of a woman lying under a big, knitted blanket, apparently a product one might want to buy from Etsy. The big letters above the ad said "Anatomical C l i t o r i s" (without spaces). Artificial stupidity.

I am glad that you mentioned this, I was able to flit up after work today for one last look around, even if sadly I couldn't flush the cutaway toilet a final time. I remembered it vividly from childhood trips and a couple of more recent ones. There is nothing better in a museum than physical objects in displays to look at, especially with some proper interractive things thrown in. It was pretty full today with people of all ages, so I reckon it would have plenty of life left for years to come with a little TLC. This and the TV series are largely responsible for my lifelong compulsion to disassemble broken things and attempt to repair them, even if it does mean my house looks rather like the gallery...

Hi Tim, can I just say how much I loved 'The Secret Life of the Home' and what a miss it is! I recently took a holiday down to London, and once off the train headed straight to the Science Museum with the intention of documenting the gallery in full in 4K. Turns out I was three weeks too late, which I'm extremely disappointed about. The eclectic - even slightly eerie - nature of your work for the Science museum is becoming much rarer in museums these days, to their detriment in my view. I managed to pay a last visit on Tuesday. The Science Museum was the busiest I’ve ever seen it, but it is half term. It took a while to find a lift that went down to the lower ground floor but once I was there, I spent a long time filming and photographing the Secret Life Of The Home gallery.
Because I was on my own, I was able to spend as much time as I wanted looking at everything and even found some items I had never seen before. The entrance with the TV and radio displays was very dark as the ceiling lights weren’t working, a lot of the interactive displays didn’t work and the glass on the display cabinets needed a proper clean, but I was very pleased that I went out of my way for one last look.
Hopefully I captured enough footage to make one or two videos to upload to TH-cam.

@@jamesharris5158So much of the Science Museum is badly planned, uninspiring and takes up an excess of space while this exhibit has more information, interaction and knowledge packed in than other entire floors. It's going to be a great loss to the science museum when it closes. Whatever replaces it will, like so much of the science museum, undoubtedly have no soul. They'd be better off repurposing the huge empty chunks of other halls than closing this and replacing it with a ball pit or whatever the plans are.

Aw, that's always been one of the highlights of my trips to the Museum! I get there every decade or so (I don't exactly live near London), and it always brings back a huge rush of memories of watching the TV series when I was (much) younger!

That was my favourite bit I only just found out today, I went down to look at it and it was closed off 😢 I was upset. Something really special about it.

Paid my respects, took the eldest last weekend… he was also reminiscing about the soft play and the size of the “seating stairs” in the basement!

I was in the UK back in the 90's; had I known it was there Id have checked it out (same for the RH&DR). But thanks for what you do, loved the series. Even my non-techie wife liked your videos. And thanks to your life-sized sewing machine I understand what a bobbin does...

I went a couple of weeks ago and it was in a sorry state, uncared for and much in need of repair. So sad to see it go but also understand why.

I went to visit it today. A cracking exhibition - I hope all the items can be re-homed and/or put on display elsewhere. You did a great job of curating it, Tim. Also, even today - a random Tuesday - there were tons of people walking round it and enjoying interacting with the exhibits.

That's a great shame, one of my favourite exhibits, buried away in the basement. I hope the whole exhibit gets saved somehow, even if it winds up in storage somewhere like the Birningham Muesums Collection, it's better than simply being fully disassembled, dispersed or destroyed 😢

I'm so sorry to see this exhibition go. I particularly remember the refrigeration and microwave oven exhibits.
I very much appreciate the contributions you have made over the years to education including some illustrations for one of the places I worked in the past, the observatory science centre in Herstmonceux, East Sussex.
I hope you manage to continue this work and know that you have been a great inspiration to many an engineer.

I loved this exhibition, it really brought one back down to earth. Certainly proved that the ordinary everyday object was an extraordinary feet of technology.

This is our favorite go to place in the Science Museum. Love the toilet, the wash machine and the fridge, even a few weeks ago we were competing to get the biggest temperature difference. I huge mistake to close it. Everything always works when we visit. We also visit the "modern interactive displays and usually about 1/4 to 1/2 are out of order.

That is a big shame. I have been lucky to be going to the Science Museum since I was a 6 year old in 1961. The Secret Life of the Home is by far the best bit, visited it just after opening, there were what you might call feedback forms then and I have the honour to have mine pinned up, amongst others, I think by the vacuum cleaners. Still there when I last went a couple or so years ago. I love the fact that 3 items on display I have had, or my Mum had, and one I still have. You, Mr Hunkin, are a legend and should have a Knighthood, no mistake. Off to the SM next week for one final look, lucky that I live less than 20 miles from it.

Awe I am so sad but hope one day it might get revived. Your exhibit had quite the staying power helping to many be inspired to understand engineering or to become one!!! I loved visiting museums like this in my time studying in England.

I still remember a marvelous maritime museum in the Fife area of Scotland that went from the earliest watercraft to modern day mega fishing boats. I am just glad I remember this exhibit now that you showed the images, I went in 2006 (studying to become an engineer at the time).

As an older engineer myself, I do not ever get to do any practical fun concept design like you show because it is all done using modeling. I only get a chance to get my hands on small motors when I have things to repair around the house myself which I do love making my 10-year-old Dyson keep working (hahaha) and the bits of my HVAC system which have tiny motors, or my washing machine for example. TH-cam is so great because information is just so easily accessible now as long as you have a willingness to try.

In the 1970s I have a feeling this area was the ‘children’s’ gallery. With the safe to crack, automatic door opener and reaction timers to remember a few, oh and the obligatory Van der Graf generator to make your hair stand on end. Very happy visits there.

Sad news. My son (now 31) and I visited the gallery many times as he was growing up and we both loved it - especially the toilet and upside-down ironing board. Not much to see at the SM any more, IMHO. Oh, and we loved "The Secret Life of..." series too.
