We had the privilege of hosting my beloved Guru, Dr. Alka Deo Marulkar-known endearingly as Alkatai-in our Pranām series this year. Alkatai is the daughter and disciple of veteran vocalist Rajabhau Deo. Her vocals and compositions reflect a confluence of three traditions: Gwalior, Jaipur and Kirana. Alkatai's mastery over semi-classical repertoire of Purab tradition, and her academic proficiency to analyze and interpret subtle elements in music lend a stamp of authority to her presentation. A prolific composer and an ardent guru, Alkatai is a holistic practitioner of Hindustani Classical Music. At present, she trains talented students from all over the country and USA, in a rigorous Gurukul tradition.
