Saw it tonight. I rank it just above The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2 and Thor: The Dark World with 6/10
My Son hit it on the head that this felt like the "Solo" movie in a Star Wars universe.
    PROS:
    The cat (comedy moments)
    Samuel L. Jackson (comedy moments)
Samuel L. Jackson's (relationship with the cat)
    De-aging technology
Skrulls being sympathetic for a change
    Mendelsohn's performance as head Skrull
Kinda cool the Tesserect was the power source Mar-Vell was working with
    Stan Lee opening
Stan Lee cameo reading script to Mallrats
    CONS:
Brie Larson's performance: Wooden for the most part
    90's nostalgia
    needless changing of Mar-Vell's character
    completely out of place soundtrack
    How Fury loses his eye
Carol's emotional relationship with friend was forced
too much panning of the camera and cuts during fight scenes
Less focused than other movies in the universe
Carol's past wasn't defined enough apart from she gets up when knocked down

That's why I like Kermode's reviews. If it's a genre that he's not very familiar with he says it and doesn't pretend to dislike or like it just because of that. Yes, MCU movies generally are good not great from movie making stand point but it doesn't matter for the fan base. If the experience is satisfying they will come.

Surprised that they don't talk about the main narrative conceit of the movie whereby half of Carol's story is told in flashback. This is where it kinda failed for me. It was something a bit different, but it meant we didn't see her character grow. We met her halfway through her own story with her memory erased, and we find out about all the heroic, gritty, characterful stuff she did in the past in brief flashbacks and stories. That big moment where it flashed back to all the times she was knocked down but got to her feet again didn't feel emotional to me because I never went through it with her. It's just something the movie told me at that moment. If anything it just felt a bit corny.
I guess they tried to make some kind of character arc for her out the "controlling her emotions" thing... but then I don't even recall a moment when her emotions were particularly strong or out of control. Again, just something we were told and never saw. She was pretty much in control and super powered from the start. She just went from super powered to ultra powered and from not knowing what was going on to knowing, so ultimately the whole thing felt like exposition. The jokes and some of the action were fun but as a character story it didn't really grab me.
That's why it doesn't really work as a stand alone film. It's more like a potted history of the character to get everyone up to speed for Endgame. I'm left hoping that Endgame doesn't rely to heavily on her character because the emotional connection with her is far less than most of the others. I still don't really know much about her personality, and the stuff I know I didn't really feel. Compare that to Guardians 1 where in one film we got to know a whole bunch of characters pretty well.

Good to see Mark keep his professional integrity and offer a fair and impartial review, rather pandering to the pressure to virtue signal by saying how great it was.
Got to be hard reviewing in this circumstance.
I thought it was okay. A bit bland, probably a 5/10. Never blew me away like infinity war did which was a solid 8/10.

Kermode danced around it and did his generous excuse making usually reserved for films with his mates in, but his “it’s fine” is a textbook damning with faint praise. I don’t think the Disney-Marvel combo are capable of making a truly bad movie, the set up is just too slick, all it is just a bit of a “meh”movie.

I liked it a lot but I agree with Mark’s point that the narrative could be clearer.
What was interesting for me was that it as a period piece it genuinely felt like it was made 25 years ago. That could be a compliment and a criticism depending on your POV but it felt very authentic.

I'll watch this video in full after I've seen the film, but I know Mark isn't a 30 something crybaby who misinterprets the intentions of others (he's actually watched the film for one thing) and as he's pointed out in previous reviews the Marvel and Superhero genre in general aren't his thing, save for the occasional but rare enjoyment.
Thank you for your fair input Mark, I don't always agree with what you say ( I might on this one) but I always like the way you present your criticisms and praises.

Apparently captain marvel, the comic, was never popular amongst comic book fans. It has had several reboots from Marvel without success. And CM has been seemingly introduced out of nowhere into the MCU. Marvel for some reason believes in this character and this movie is probably another attempt at a reboot.

Just to set things up right at the start: NO, Brie Larson did not say she didn't want white men to watch her movies, or review her movies, or interview her. She said that she wanted to see greater representation of a wider range of people than JUST middle aged white men in the discussion of modern films. Especially if the film is likely to appeal to an audience that is itself not exclusively white and/or male. If you honestly believe that what she said or what she meant is "No White Guys", then you are a person with a toxic agenda who's deliberately misconstrued her words, you've been lied to by those same people, or you are stupid.

I don't think people think she means no white guys, they think she is offensive by pointing her finger to put anyone else down in order to boost someone else. It's seen as rude, hypocritical for a privileged whitey like her, and is regression, not progress. Tokenism, guilt and social vanity are also being misunderstood as somehow promoting minorities rather than minorities actually being empowered. This is the 21st Century, not the 1980s. Captain Caucasian, Jesus Geldof, whatever she thinks she is, needs to tone it down. Putting others down and not earning your way is not the future. There is not a person - of any description - alive today who is responsible for history. And if you aren't nice, then why should I be? So there we are, that's how far we got.

    @TheSt1092 5 ปีที่แล้ว +18

It was fine but not great. I would say it is the most uninspiring entry in the MCU i've seen since Thor : The Dark World. The big problem with this movie is it's trying to to be two things at once which aren't entirely compatible - a standalone prequel to most of the other MCU films and a holding pattern to set up Avengers: Endgame.

  • @planetmarshalluk
    @planetmarshalluk 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I just feel that if you're not part of the target audience of the MCU, it's hard to see what all the fuss is about. It'd be great if they just made a good film, that didn't require this huge fan support structure to hold it up, or, in some cases, tear it down. I think Guardians was about the closest the MCU have come to a film that really stands on it's own.

Yeah, the editing sucked. And Western directors have this habit of rapid cuts in action scenes which is a massive turn off for me. Look what James Wan did in Aquaman, the first action scene with Aquaman's mom...it was awesome. No cuts, just the camera panning around.

Skipping this film, watching End Game (I promised the kids) and then I'm out.
I've missed Civil War, Homecoming, Dr Strange, and both Ant Man films at the cinema. Fell asleep during Ragnarok. When I eventually Netflixed most of those I felt justified in not seeing them on the big screen.

Isn't saying something's "not far behind Black Panther" a little like saying something's "almost as tasty as blancmange"? Generally I keep hearing Black Panther was pretty average, and I expect this film is largely similar. As you can tell I've not really been keeping on top of the super hero genre; frankly I'm fatigued by the glut of increasingly niche comic-book characters dominating our cinema screens.

The beginning was an awesome epic space opera story, which I was really enjoying, but knew it would eventually end up on earth as a superhero film. It started losing me at the farm house then really petered out and became boring in the finale. Just like Alita, all the conflicts get resolved when the main character goes into God Mode. As always, a very fair review, although I have to say that the 'de-aged' Samuel Jackson really did bother me :) The only laughs I heard were from other dads when there were references to Alta Vista, dial-up connections and the like, but all in all I didn't have a clue what was going on. It was messy and noisy and I think I got as far as the bit when she met up with her old air force colleague and their reminiscences before I nodded off. Then when I woke up again it turned out that the bad guys were actually good guys or something like that and Scarlet Johansson had somehow made it onto the screen, and I realised that any attempts at understanding it were futile.

I thought it was perfectly adequate but perhaps doesn’t have the charm of other marvel character movies. Samuel l jackson was much needed for the movie which is a shame in a way as they had great opportunity to make their first female led film in the franchise as something great. Perhaps as well serving as a warm up act for endgame probably doesn’t help.

This movie was so BLAND. Doesn't help that the lead is played by an actress that is unbelievably boring and has one face for every emotion.

movie sucked. weirdly disjointed, it has like three different parts or styles that don't fit together, and then, at the end, when we get to resolving the actual story and character arcs (i guess), it lacks any intensity or investment, the picture is dark and the action is confusing, the villains are totally sidelined, there are funny moments and you know what the thing is about (so you may say - you don't need to focus on villains - or someething like that) but you don't feel it. also, how weird was it to hear nirvana in a mainstream movie, that was a treat, how weird was it then to hear hole in the credits.

I agree with Mark on a lot of this. I saw the film before hearing the review and here's my brief thoughts:
Some really interesting shots that I liked, acting was generally good (Brie Larson didn't really feel like she ever really "fit" as Captain Marvel to me, but she wasn't ever bad), CGI was iffy at points (especially noticible during the inevitible smashy-smashy-explosions third act setpieces) but definitely servicible, plot held together well & the film got a good few chuckles out of me.
I wanted to enjoy it more than I ever actually did, but it was still a fun enough film. Probably on par with Doctor Strange (minus the awesome visual aesthetics), in my eyes.
To give it an arbitrary number that will mean nothing to anyone except me: 6.5/10 (Good, but not amazing - you'll enjoy it while you're watching it, but will quickly notice problems with it when you think back on it)

Not a Marvel fan at all. But I didn’t know how much I needed to see a relatable, emotive female action hero kicking ass after ass after ass after ass to ‘Just A Girl’ by No Doubt until I saw it.
Comedy, sisterly love, and a bit with a cat. Fun and empowering, if a little (ok, a lottle) predictable.

The big question: Could someone who doesn't read comic books understand and enjoy this film? I've seen all the Marvel films and I get what's going on. But I have no idea who Captain Marvel is. I only vaguely heard about the Kree and Skrulls. I'm just not up on 40 years of Marvel characters and drama and the different reboots and re-imaginings and "retcons".

I didn't really care for the film so I never saw it, much like guardians of the Galaxy 2, I just wasn't interested, I like cosmic fantasy stories. But those 2 films just didn't grab me for some reason.

As someone who was once a huge MCU fan (and is still invested enough to have seen all the films in the cinema for the past 11 years) they have chugged along and are pretty much always solid but rarely anything exceptional these days (with the exception of Infinity War which I absolutely loved.) I could make an argument for Agents of Shield Season 4 being the best MCU related thing produced in recent memory but I'm one of the five people that is still watching that show.

It was okay perfectly passable, not the best MCU film an don't sure how she'll fit into Endgame as she is sloooooooowwww powerful it could be over very quickly. Ben Mendelssohn was awesome, just not sure about the Skrulls and the path they decided to take.
I definitely didn't get the magical feeling I got from Infinty War or Black Panther.

I think every film should have a female lead role. And every remake of a film should have a female cast. Then we can all not go and see it, and Hollywood still don't get the hint.

I enjoyed it, I'd been looking forward to it for a while. I love Kelly Sue DeConnick and Dexter Soy's run on the comic back in 2012. I had a fun time with the movie. It's not a shot in the arm these origin movies need. But it was a fun movie and a nice setup for Endgame.
