I listened to your last podcast after the Rockets beat the Cavs in Houston. You mentioned how the Cavs would easily beat with Rockets with Mobley. Now the Rockets beat the Cavs WITH Mobley. Any respect for Rockets? A decent team? Still no respect huh.
The Cavs are super-deep! That's one thing these leading teams have in common -- OKC, Cleveland, Houston, Boston, and Memphis all have 3-5 guys that can go off for 30+ points. Team's can't just stop one guy and win. As a Houstonian, I think it's good that the Cavs are going through these issues now. Get the injuries out of the way before the all-star break, recuperate, then ramp up to protect your seeding and get ready for the playoffs. Don't push Jarrett and Mobley too much by leaning on Tristan Thompson more. Y'all have a good chance to make a deep run and possibly win it all this year. I'm just glad to see this young Rockets squad continuing to grow. It's the most exciting brand of basketball that I've seen in decades (yes, more entertaining than watching Harden iso 60 times a game). I hope whatever experience we have in the playoffs will be a catalyst for future growth.
I respect what you guys do. You can't be so blinded as a fan that you can't see the gaping problems this cavs team has. The record is really good. But honestly the eye test tells me the way they are playing the last month is cause for concern. They aren't playing like a Championship team. It's so good that this is happening right now before the break. Now they know this feeling, they know what it takes to beat good quality teams. I already seen what I needed to see from them. They're not breaking any records, but they still have a very good shot at winning a Championship this year. The Zone can't be used for possessions on end like they do. They need to switch things up more often.
If you look at the three teams everyone considers true championship contenders this year in Boston, OKC, and the Cavs, they’re all slumping atp in the season (at least for their standards). If you think about it, every team is gonna slump at some point. Since it’s gonna happen, I’d much rather it be now than in the beginning or end of the season, let alone the playoffs.
A lot of excuses...in the this pod and i heard from the coach and the broadcast as well. The rockets have also dealt with injuries, Jabari Smith is one of our defensers, and is a switchable big like Mobley and Tari has been out for 20 games, who is our 2nd best defensive player in the team The rockets are incredibly deep and i doubt the cavs lose any game with Mitchell and garland scoring more than 30+ each. That just shows you how good this rockets team is and how incredibly deep it is as a team. I dont like the excuses, i get it was a back to back, the cavs should have lost by 20 points, like a few days ago. You cant just call it all on injuries and have to make a assessment based on results and in a 7 game series. I got the rockets.
Houston played better on the road even the home to road records are identical. If you can't win them at their house, it's hard to win them on the road.
I get it. This Cavs team is insanely good and so if you see them lose three games in a row (which is a normal thing for even very good teams), it seems concerning. The Rockets have the fourth best record in the NBA. They are an incredibly good team. The 76ers have been bad, but their talent is a whole lot better than their record. I wouldn't be too concerned.
All the teams can use the break! Although Houston played well for good stretches, they didn’t play their best in either game and still won both. Decent TEAM? The Rockets have the 4th best record in the entire NBA. They’re top 10 in offense and anywhere between 2-4 defensively depending what metrics you use and rankings! Man, the excuses are mind boggling!
Cleveland is a really good team but the Rockets are different this year despite injuries to 2 of their key players. Super physical and super balanced despite their lack of great outside shooters, because they can score very effectively in other ways. Amen Thompson is an absolute problem for the entire NBA, not just the Cavs. That block on the Mobley post up was insane 🤯. It's almost not fair and I pity just about every team that has to face him. He absolutely shut down Mitchell once he switched off Mobley in the second half and I can't think of another player in the league that can do that. Well maybe his brother Ausar :)
So agree there should be no concern on the panic button. Also agree the offense was enough. As far as post mortem, there are a couple very distinct things that should have been mentioned on the defense. Kenny tried to hack a Steven Adams, that completely killed Cavs momentum in Q3. Also tried the zone which worked in the first match up, but got busted this go around. When watchimg the fame, felt like gimmicks than actual defense.
Spida's defense the last 10 games has been awful bruh. Guys are just blowing right past him. Not having Caris or Okoro to give him break is hurting us severely. I keep sayin, we have to play JT the rookie MORE! He has the intangibles and until we get more length on the wing and heaviness in the paint, we gonna keep gettin manhandled like children.
My problem is that the Cavs now KNOW how great they can be, and I think they try to “flip the switch” like you’ve mentioned before. Once they brought it back to within 6 in the 4th, you could see them hiking their shorts up and trying to play lock in defense (especially Donovan). The problem is, they should’ve done that to start the game and throughout! Not only is it hard to switch your mindset up as a team with 4 minutes left in the game, there’s also a much smaller margin of error to allow teams to score when you’re down with that little time left, as opposed to playing that way out of the gate where you have the whole game to lock in! I’m not too worried because if you look across the league, all 3 contenders are on a bit of a slump by their standards, and if there were anytime we were gonna slump I’d happily rather it be right in the middle of the season as opposed to the beginning or end, ESPECIALLY the playoffs, but we gotta lock back in at some point
The first problem of the Cavs is that they need stronger/bulkier center/backup center for teams with dominant center or agressive teams like NYK or OKC. Someone like Jonas Valančiūnas or Steven Adams. Also it would not hurt them to acquire cheap big defensive backup F/PF. They do not need another slim PF/C or shooting F/PF.
You're right, they don't need another wing. But they sure don't need dirtbag Adams. He would not fit their style at all.Nurkic would fit their style, though.
This week has been a valuable learning experience, teachable moments. *Houston* - In the first game, focus on executing better down the stretch, hitting your free throws, and remember that the refs are not going to bail you out. *Philly* - Don't underestimate your opponent. Without Evan down low, you need to bring more effort on defense. *Houston** - Play your game. It's okay to try new strategies, but be prepared to pivot quickly and revisit them later if needed, especially regarding the defensive tactics. The Cavaliers are a young team that is still learning how to compete for a championship. They need to develop a playoff mindset, as they are now the team being targeted. It's better for them to work through these challenges now rather than in May and June. I understand the frustration, but the Cavs have not played their best and were missing Evan Mobley for two of the three games. Despite this, they had opportunities to win all three. Previously, their losses were by significant margins, so consider this as progress in the development of a team built for multiple championship runs. Go Cavs!

The Cavs need to address something they have needed for the past three seasons. They need a 6’8-6’9 wing player that can play both ends of the floor. He doesn’t have to be a 20 point scorer but can give you something like 15 point, 8 boards and can switch defensively. They won’t make it to the finals with this roster.
