    Palladium traces are quite common. In the 60s and 70s they tested with different precious metals for several reasons, silver didn't work out well, platinum couldn't be used because it is so dense and was much harder to use accurately back during that time and palladium worked really well even better than gold.

      That is some good information to know I didn't know that now I do just stacks on the knowledge. Thank you

    • @chosen1one930
      @chosen1one930 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@ChannonWW2214 your welcome, you can find information from old articles from that time frame if you Google the topic, you have to weed out the newer ewaste links though. I pasted one link. Palladium is also common in connectors. Different manufacturers started at different times some even in the 50s. UT it is pretty uncommon to come across material that old all the time. Rhodium is also used in connectors but very rare, only certain military contacts call for that. I've also been a collector, enthusiast, refiner and I really research a lot which helps. Always becareful when handling platinum group metals. As a refiner you can go by this, if trace lines are very shiny and pretty think most likely it is only tin with trace amounts of silver. Traces that are more pale and really aren't shiny than you have a solder with more silver or palladium but sometimes they can be shiny depending on the elements etc just varies and you'll learn to get better the more you see . Every manufacturer did different things so the amount or percentage of alloys can change a lot. Testing is key, absorb a little with acid than do a stannous test.

      @@chosen1one930 oh man i may have alot more palladium then i expected. Just put away a 25 kg bucket of '71-'74 tektronix boards for later. Near another bucket of 60s and 70s. Now i think i might get back to them sooner then i intended.

    • @chosen1one930
      @chosen1one930 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@colonialcharlie8702 here's the one bad thing. It is pretty uncommon to come across every single board with palladium. They didn't use it blindly back during those times because they still used gold and or silver alloy solder for trace lines. With Tektronix boards while they are high end I have found less palladium on those, same with hp because they mainly used all gold for everything. I definitely don't have major experience with Tektronix boards because I ever found much or anything higher end but I had around 100 pounds give or take from auctions I bought over the years, mainly HP board lots with some Tektronix, I ran across gold 10 to 1 but these were all in the 70s. 60s would most likely have a better chance. Once you start dealing with or processed enough you can spot it by eye or you know to check a board a little closer, silver color fingers are a good give away because I've never dealt with silver fingers on older equipment either gold or palladium. I tried to keep records of board makers or brands so you can have a cheat sheet. I rarely refine these days due to health problems stemming from rare diseases and so on but I still buy auctions than I either depopulate the boards to part out for sale, or hoard the boards l cpus etc hoping for gold to double in 0rice eventually or they go in my collection. I'm actually in the hospital right now sadly but I'm still buying auctions, you have to check every hour or so to find the best deals and make friends with the people you buy from. To give some examples, during the Pandemic I've bought close to 100 pounds of HP boards all from the 70s or before for $375, 50ish pounds of cinch Amp etc edge card connectors with wire wrap pins made in 60s to 80s for $150, around 50 pounds OF NOS military radar boards from 70sand 80s, fupy played one side and cm thick gold traces on back for 79. 99. That is only a few that I've been lucky enough to win as auction or listed as buy it now. Back to palladium, when your first starting just test one of the traces by using a razor blade to pull up a piece basically how Dusan has done with the hp gold traces and heat, than test it, no sense on wasting time if it isn't something worth while, or you can use sreetips trick and leave a drop of acid on the traces for a bit than wipe it up and test it that way. Removing excess solder helps when processing as well, owltech has a good method for that I've tried a couple times to see how it works, depopulate the boards than add the boards to a stainless steel pot, add water, 100 grams of citric acid monohydrate and 5 to 10% diluted nitric. Leave it for a day and all solder will be free, rinse the board 9ff and let them dry than there good to go for ap or nitric, whatever you prefer.

    Oh boy, I've worked in industrial automation most of my life, I was lucky to have hired in at a used robot company right out of high school back in the 80's. The company would purchase used robots and complete robotic cells just to strip away all the used peripherals in order to remove and overhaul the robots as they were from the factory. The end result unfortunately was truck loads of PLC's automated conveyer lines and so so much tooling sent to scrap yard or to the dump. Seeing those boards definitely brought back memories, it's good to see someone taking the time and know how to recover valuable materials that so much of society blindly cast away with little or no concern. Tip my hat to you Sir, and I look forward to future content.

    Based on my experience, copper, silver and palladium do not react with cold dilute nitric acid. So do not conclude easily that it is palladium. I think what you should look for is the colour the metal gives when it reacts with concentrated Nitric acid. Base metals (nitric acid) is usually green, copper is blue, silver is colourless or if plated, light blue and light green. Palladium is orange or if with metals dark blue. Rhodium will not react at all.

    Does anyone else save any metals like copper or save up on cpus or some kind of e-waste? Its great for saving money, keep a couple pounds of copper or brass out of whatever you scrap. The same can be done with ceramic cpus etc or saving a little gold mud out of each drop. All of it adds 70 over time and whether you want to save it for Christmas funds, vacations or hold it for longer as a savings account or a extra retirement fund, all of it helps plus if you play the stock market properly and learn what drives spot prices you will know when to sell or hold which can make you a lot more money.

    It's best to take what you can get and never hunt for certain metals but for videos to teach people its OK. Rhodium is really rare to come upon sadly. Catalytic converters are always your best option unless 8f you know someone in scientific research, they use crazy screens that are made of platinum group metals including rhodium. Rhodium is extremely rare in e-waste, especially in anything that isn't Russian made. After 15 plus years I finally got some USSR hardware, military ICs and transitors
