Speaking of the Future: Advanced Manufacturing

  • Imagine a world where we can 3D print a full-size cargo plane or quickly produce a body part to save someone's life. Through additive manufacturing or 3D printing, we are bringing people closer to products and solving challenges in new ways. We are pushing the limits of this technology to produce parts quickly and affordably with geometry and design that has never been possible before.

The deminshing law of returns here is how the method needs to be understood apart from others.

Naturally you cannot do a factory in your living room on your desk, but 3d "printing" technology are opening to The factory of the future, with a better and more efficient interface beetween computer 3d design and physical making by industrial robots.

As technology increases, so will the electronics that can be blended in with the materials.

Would be nice if you went with vertical merging. It drives down costs.

Technology requires a great deal of money as well as minds. When the Gov't backs a company developing in a field that is of interest to them you will get advanced devices. The touch screens we are so fond of were first implemented on F/A-18 Hornet jet fighters. If you live here and you like it we must defend it. Although I don't like the spying and some of the underhandedness, but that goes on everywhere, always has and will. As with any new technology there are greater possibilities as well as illegal uses. 3D printing is dynamic and will change manufacturing and we all will benefit in some way from it.

I know its only a short video but this is additive 3D printing he discussed, there are other types. Its interesting that a large company is closely researching this area, particularly the materials apsect. I wonder if they will release any of their findings or keep it all inhouse?

great a factory of the future; are there outlets available to the public. also, i need a car replica of a segment of a car's panel, can a 3D printer print it out?? And butter fly's; could you make a copy of a butterfly that mimics a real butterfly in all aspects that are important??

Mind blowing technology, mainly because it will end up being used to blow someones head off. Imagine what you could do with this tech if you did`nt have a militaristic purpose in mind. I.e. homes for disaster victims that could withstand all conditions, have heating and lighting systems inbedded in the walls as well as a communications suite... There are more reasons to use it for humanitarian advancements than military!

Your just a pure pessimist. You can't advance in this world unless you can defend it from those that want to destroy it.

The idea of using 3d printing to build emergency housing for disaster relief is being researched and explored right now. So yes, it's being researched outside of the military spectrum as well.

donfully I was`nt aware, but you can understand why it would make sense for a company like this to focus on humanity instead of empire building. I`m an aeronautical engineer and i have seen all the best developments go to the defence industry. Its about time it went to benefit mankind rather than destroy it.

This company has nothing to do with the use of these technologies, they only provide what their clients ask for (mainly the U.S.). Please give up your T.V., jet flight, the internet, and GPS, because you would have shut down all that research considering your disproving of research not directly related to military (aircraft manufacturing techniques) just because it might first be used by the military.

JWQweqOPDH Dude, honestly i dont hae a problem with new technology, i do have a problem with the fact its borne out of the military. Our species needs to get out of that frame of mind. Aiding each other in the advancement of one another should be our first priority, not how we can destroy our neighbour.

Imagine building, or should I say growing a complex device monolithicly like that. It's exciting in a way. That machines one day, will be able to "give birth" so to speak, they will be able to design and incorporate adaptations into the next generation depending on the environment in which they function, much like how our biological systems do now, but at a much faster rate.
Frankly, I have believed for a long time that humans will evolve beyond just a carbon hydrogen base, to one that will be silicon also. Life imitating life, but in a completely new way that will allow the new evolved species, dependent not, for air, pressure, food and water. To truly have the freedom to explore the universe and like a seed on the wind, travel great distances without time as a constraint and settle new worlds. That I believe is our purpose, to be the instruments of this destiny.

Come on Lockheed make an RC model FPV plane for the general public. It doesn't need to be stealthy, and keep the price down.
