  • In this video I attempt to start replacing the springs on my VIva HC with which I thought were Corsa B springs. There is a disaster at the end of the video and in my thumbnail pic I copy the ever increasing number of car youtubers that look extremely confused in their photo 🤣

    Eight hundred views in four hours, and nearly four thousand subscribers. Seems a lot of folk like one man and his Viva! Old cars can be frustrating, you're going great, then something goes wrong to put you back days. Worthwhile mod, though. Suits this car.

    Hey Steve, noticed the inside of your wheel arch in the boot is spot on, you normally see patches there as crap gets stuck behind the shock absorbers and rots it. Suspension looking nice and level mate, just cut down on the chocolate bars 😅

    At first I'd of thought corsa springs wouldn't be strong enough but to be fair it did look a lot firmer mate 👍
    drill the cup out and use a bolt if you can't find a replacement, it'll work just the same! Haha the self telling off was awesome 🤣 "nah cos ya tightened it" 🤣 Mint 👍

    Don't dwell on this as this will be a common theme with old cars. I don't know how many times I've broken a bolt/part tightening or untightening something. It just happens. Keep up the good work.

    Great seeing the Viva again, good resourcefulness adapting the Corsa coil spring, maybe worthwhile getting four new ones made up to provide some consistency, the old one being the template.
    Great to see the Viva boot light system working 💪 with its three essential components.
    Look forward to whatever you decide, great to the generosity of specialist subscribers.
    Until the next video 📹 👌👍🍺🍻🥃

    Grind the stub of the snapped bolt off so that it is flat and then simply drill a new hole. You are either going to end up drilling through the weld for the stud causing it to drop off or you can replace the whole stud with a suitably long M8 bold with a washer and a new nut.

    • @RetroRebuild

    The original viva HC front suspension set up is a better more competent design than struts, thats why f1 and supercars have double wishbones, the actual real reason why struts took over is because they are easier to manufacture and are a lot cheaper.
    A popular modification back in the day of hillman imp racing was to fit a viva front subframe and suspension to the front of the hillman imp.

    • @RetroRebuild
      @RetroRebuild  ปีที่แล้ว

      I've heard of viva front suspension being used on a lot of hot rod builds before 👍

    Great vid Stevie. I like to watch when I'm having my Sunday lunch. Pity about the fixing snapping. However, better that it failed in your driveway than on the motorway. I guess you could drill the old bolt out, but you would have to know what kind of bolt to replace it with. By that I mean that it might be high tensile steel as it's a suspension component.

    • @RetroRebuild
      @RetroRebuild  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you mate, appreciate it. I will sort something but yes will definitely use high tensile steel with it the being the suspension 👍Thanks for continuing to watch 👍

    New springs didn't come with the top mount assembly, they were just bare, so you had to drill out the peened over 'bush' that held the rubber bush to the plates etc and I think you could either make a new one and peen it over yourself, or just carefully place it all together and rely on the car weight etc to hold it in place while you bolted it all back together (like you did anyway). I also seem to remember lathing up some bottom mounts for the spring that were a bit thicker, but for the life of me now, I can't remember why (maybe I'd lowered it too much?). I had got the lowered springs from a mail order company back in the day but can't remember much about them now.
    I think I drilled out the bottom cup and used a nut and bolt before. May have even welded the bot to the cup to make it more like oem, but the thick spacer versions I made were brass so would have just been nut and bolted.
    For the front, on a Magnum I cut a coil or two off the existing spring, and with the coil in a bucket of water, heated up the cut coil so it could be 'bent' and made flat at the top and sit in the spring mount correctly. The water was to stop the heat affecting and softening the rest of the soring. It seemed to work too as the spring still worked just fine and didn't collapse.
    Might be an idea to get some new firmer shocks too.

    • @RetroRebuild
      @RetroRebuild  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for all of that info mate! Appreciate it, Making my own mounts is an idea I've got in my head for the future, and yes I am going to invest in some new shocks too. Thanks for watching 👍

    Thank you for another great video, if you cannot get a replacement, you could drill it out and weld a bolt to the inside. I found out that the thicker spring the harder the ride, the shorter the spring the lower the car is.

    Cut off the bolt flush with the mount and drill a hole in it and replace with a similar bolt either M8 and a nut on the underside, make sure though you get a high tensile bolt and nuts you don't want that bugger snapping doing a tonne up the A19 lol

    • @RetroRebuild
