Weight Loss Surgery in Mexico - Travel and Surgery Vlog | My Gastric Bypass Journey

  • I had a Gastric Bypass on December 1, 2020 at Mexico Bariatric Center in Tijuana Mexico. These are the clips from my trip, including how I was feeling directly after surgery and what it was like during this entirely new experience for me. The staff is top-notch at MBC and I was cared for very well and had a great experience. Surgery went very well with no complications, and post-op was surprisingly easy, given my stomach had just been chopped in two.

    What was the cost? And the name of the surgery center?

    • @1FatBeet
      @1FatBeet  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The total cost of my surgery was $7,225. The gastric bypass procedure is more expensive than the sleeve, and I had a high BMI so my total reflected an extra $695. I had surgery at Mexico Bariatric Center which is done at the Mi Doctor Hospital in Tijuana Mexico.

      Thank you for your kind comments! I didn't need the REAL ID to board the flight - that law doesn't start until October 1st of this year. I did just use my passport, though, since I was bringing it with me to get back over the boarder from Mexico :)

    Ok, my 2nd time watching this and I'm soooooo excited about my upcoming procedure at MBC June 28th. Also a little emotional. 😮 How did the PJ pants elastic feel with your Incision? What's a good outfit to plan on flying home in? Thanks.

    • @1FatBeet
      @1FatBeet  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      All of my incisions were below the elastic of my PJs, but they weren't tight by any means so it wouldn't have been uncomfortable to pull them up either. I chose to wear a comfy dress and leggings for my flight home and was super cozy!

    Hi! Thanks for sharing your story!
    I’m on the fence about getting a VSG.. super anxious and nervous.
    But i have a few questions,
    who was your surgeon and coordinator?
    How was the bedside manner of the surgeon?
    Also did you have your own room in hospital ?

    • @1FatBeet
      @1FatBeet  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      My surgeon was Dr. Rodriguez Lopez and my coordinator was Cathy. The surgical team had a great beside manner and a lot of people came by on my surgery morning to talk with me and answer any questions I had. I only met the surgeon once, and honestly I was so ready I didn't even talk to him very long because I didn't have any other questions, but he was very nice and ready to answer anything I needed before surgery. I did have my own room, though I've heard if they are busy enough that you may share with one other person. With COVID not allowing visitors, I wouldn't have minded sharing a room and having someone to talk with!

    I recognize Seattle! I live in Aberdeen! How was traveling to San Diego from Seattle during covid? Did you have to take proof of a negative covid test?

    • @1FatBeet
      @1FatBeet  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Seattle's so recognizable! Travel to San Diego from Sea Tac was really easy and is a pretty quick flight. I didn't need any COVID testing when I flew. We also flew Alaska Airlines and they were leaving all middle seats empty so it felt a little safer, though I'll be honest I was nervous about flying in general.

    What hotel did you stay in and did your mom have to pay extra for her stay in the hotel while you were in the hospital?
    You are amazing and courageous. Thank you for sharing. We are going in May 2021 for my daughters surgery.

    • @1FatBeet
      @1FatBeet  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We stayed at the Hyatt Place Tijuana Hotel; it's what is included in the surgery package and they handle everything with the reservation. There was an extra cost for having a companion stay in the hotel - I believe it was around $400, and it was wrapped up in the cost of the surgery so I paid for that at the same time as everything else.

She did wander around during the day a few times within walking distance of the hotel - there was a grocery store nearby and she picked up food from some restaurants a couple of times as well. So your mom couldn't visit u at all while u were in the hospital?

    • @1FatBeet
      @1FatBeet  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, due to COVID they are trying to be as safe as possible. Last I heard, they are waiting for the Mexican government to make any announcements/decisions on loosening these restrictions. The wifi at the hospital was great and I kept connected with my mom via video and messenger apps while she stayed at the hotel nearby.

    Why did you get a bypass instead of the sleeve?

    • @1FatBeet
      @1FatBeet  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question! I plan to do a video on that in the future, but in a nutshell...
      * The research suggests that those with higher BMI have more success with bypass. I had a BMI of 64.4!
      * Bypass is better if there are comorbidities - though I have not been diagnosed with any (thankfully), I have a family history of high blood pressure, diabetes, and GERD. I chose bypass to help me keep those risk factors at bay.
      * I didn't want them taking away part of my stomach. I know it sounds silly but I didn't like the idea of part of my organ being removed entirely.
      * Gastric bypass has been done for a LONG time and there is a lot of research out there about this surgery. I felt more comfortable with what they consider the "gold standard" of weight loss surgeries rather than the sleeve that has been done for less time.

    • @1FatBeet
      @1FatBeet  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I also would like to add to this that both options are completely valid and have helped so many people! I just found the bypass to fit me and my life better personally.

    Just curious, you were talking about the medication for pain management. Is that included in your package price or was it an additional charge? I'm hoping to know what to expect. THANKS!

    • @1FatBeet
      @1FatBeet  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was given a box of sublingual Ketorolac on discharge, but I also bought a couple of extra boxes at the pharmacy before leaving Mexico, and that extra stuff at the pharmacy was an extra cost. In total I think I purchased about $130 of extra stuff at the pharmacy but I really ended up not using very much of it at all.

    • @1FatBeet
      @1FatBeet  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      During COVID, the hospital is being extra careful and not allowing visitors. She didn't get to visit me, but I talked with her and video chatted with her many times while I was there, and then she was at the hotel waiting for me when I was released.
