Lisa is Homeless in Venice Beach, California. Rats Run Into the Bushes During This Interview.

- While walking around handing out socks to new homeless friends, I started to talk to a woman who was sitting on the sidewalk. Her name is Lisa, and she is homeless in Venice Beach, California. I don't exactly remember the conversation, but at one point Lisa says to me all excited "we were on Dateline together." HOLY WOW she was right!
A few months prior, Dateline NBC produced a show about homelessness in Los Angeles. I may be a little biased because Dateline featured Invisible People, but I think Dateline produced one of the best shows on the topic I have ever seen. You can watch the full City of Angeles episode here: www.nbcnews.co...
I think the world of Lisa. After we first met, we connected a little bit before this interview. While walking down Venice Beach Boardwalk, almost every vendor and homeless person said hello to her. She is a kind and loving person. Liked by many. Lisa is also the type of individual I envision when I think of Venice Beach culture.
Venice Beach is one of the most wonderful and unique places I have ever visited. Being an old hippie myself, I find the bohemian lifestyle romantic. People are drawn to Venice for many different reasons these days but many are drawn by the lure of a carefree life and freedoms to express themselves as individuals. Venice Beach is known for healers, mystics, psychics, artists, and musicians.
Lisa is a gifted natural health professional, a healer! She has a master's degree in Acupuncture/Ancient Asian Medicine and is a Certified Bach Flower Therapist. You can find her blog here: theflowerchildb...
Lisa also doesn't want to be homeless. The good news is Lisa is connected to support services that are helping her get off the streets. I cannot imagine the pain and suffering Lisa has experienced living on the streets of Los Angeles. In the middle of this interview, if you watch close enough, you'll see rats running in and out of the bushes. NO ONE SHOULD HAVE TO SLEEP ON A SIDEWALK NEXT TO RATS!

About Invisible People:
Since its launch in November 2008, Invisible People has leveraged the power of video and the massive reach of social media to share the compelling, gritty, and unfiltered stories of homeless people from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. The vlog (video blog) gets up close and personal with veterans, mothers, children, layoff victims and others who have been forced onto the streets by a variety of circumstances. Each week, they’re on InvisiblePeople.tv, and high traffic sites such as TH-cam, Twitter and Facebook, proving to a global audience that while they may often be ignored, they are far from invisible.
Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and can’t ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nation’s most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath - its founder - and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America’s homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.
To everyone that’s commenting that Lisa may have mental challenges - WHAT DO YOU THINK HAPPENS TO PEOPLE LIVING ON THE STREETS HOMELESS?
The longer someone is outside, the more their mental state deteriorates! STOP FOR A SECOND AND THINK ABOUT WHAT THIS WOMAN HAS HAD TO DO TO SURVIVE! A woman living on the streets face a huge risk of being abused!
It’s a miracle she is still kind and loving! Having to live in her shoes, I’m not sure any of us would be so nice after years on the streets!
Oh, and don’t forget, the longer someone is outside and the more their mental state deteriorates, THE MORE TAXPAYERS PAY for the cost of support services.
If you want to know who is nuts or crazy or whacked - it’s us for allowing people to sleep outside. It’s us for not working to end the affordable housing crisis. It’s us for paying huge taxpayer money to maintain homelessness.
u r missing the point why didnt she accept the help from the friend r u listening to what she is saying because she was incapable of following the simple rules of living with others she cant find a job just listen imagine attending an interview and babbling on like that
@@byronallen8931 Did you even read what I wrote?
I absolutely agree with Mark affordable housing is cheaper than temporarily housing people. If the federal government would build some affordable housing. It would save the taxpayers mega bucks. I just watched a video about a homeless camp in New Jersey. That's was a point they were making. Building affordable housing or housing people is much cheaper in the long run. I bet if the majority of taxpayers were actually aware of the difference in cost. That they would demand affordable housing for the homeless.
Exactly!
@@byronallen8931 are you for real?

Homelessness is EVERYWHERE. I'm from the south and I've seen it more and more amongst my generation (I'm a millennial) and the elderly. It's no laughing matter. Be careful how you treat people because you could be one paycheck, or catastrophe away from losing EVERYTHING. I'm just blessed to eat and sleep everyday. Please count your blessings. Thanks for the coverage on this on-going problem.
Kenard Garner so true
Kenard Garner this is why we need to quell immigration for awhile. We need to fix this country first.
Nonsense. These people deserve every bit of contempt they attract. Born into endless opportunity and safety in the First World, and they do this. Save your compassion for clean living and hard working Third Worlders who have no choice.
Further, no responsible and decent First Worlder is one pay cheque away from homelessness.
@@DP-jy2ge assuming you are employed (or self-employed), I hope you don't EVER receive a "pink" slip, or lose business in your line of work. NO ONE is exempt from it. Not even the well-to-do folks. Even so, I hope you are in good health as well. Health care cost are rising, and many folks have some jobs just for the coverage. My hope for any "hard-working" person is that they are physically-able to work and provide for themselves (and loved ones). I was homeless at one time, so I know how it feels. Regardless of how you feel about homelessness, my point is just be grateful for what you do have because it could be you in one of these videos. That's all. No matter your walk of life. Have a blessed day.
You are so right. I lived pay check by paycheck and alone..I lost my job without warning. In that moment by life changed completely. In less then a heartbeatbI knew i would be homeless. Thank goodness i had family to help me. ....i was laid off with 60 other workers and still cant find a job.

You would be shocked at the number of college educated and intelligent people who are out there. It breaks my heart. I've had the most stimulating conversation with homeless people. It could be anyone. Never get big headed and think it'll never be me cause I can promise you that over 98% of the homeless population thought the exactly same thing. It is so sad! I wish I could wave a wand and fix it all. But I can't it would take all of us humans doing the right thing to stop homelessness. God bless her!

I've been homeless and am about to be once again, just can't afford insurance, rent , power and living expenses anymore, I'm gonna have to put my things into storage and live in my vehicle like I had to before. I don't feel bad about it though cause it is what it is.

I love California and would love to live there again but not until I can afford it. Prayers to everyone and hope one day I can help others there.
California is so bad, people are paying hefty amounts in the name of rent.
good bless ya
I lived in West Hollywood from 2009-2011. Back then, I had a three bedroom house in the hills near Sunset Plaza that was $2700/month. It was a 70s style house and very dated in every sense of the word, but it was in an ideal area for my work and I had my sister and creative partner living there as well.
A year ago, I looked the house up to see what the rent was like now, because I’d been hearing from many how LA had really gone downhill since I’d moved. To be honest, it was scary even when I had lived there. Never saw so much crime, arrests in public and mentally ill people on the streets, in my life, until I’d lived there.
When I saw today’s rent there, I almost fell off my chair. That very same house, which hasn’t been updated since, now costs a staggering $5k/month.
But such inflation is not just destroying people in LA, it’s also happening here in NYC, where I am now. If it wasn’t for my husband, I’d been homeless by now. Before I moved to LA, I had an apartment that rented for $2100/month. That place is also going for $4k/month now.
Who can afford $4-$5k/month just for a decent roof over their head? It’s not just in NYC or LA either.. in the suburbs and decent house starts there. I rented a place for $2k/month and it was a shoebox of a bungalow that was falling apart, in every sense of the word. To the point where my foot went through the floor because it was so bad.
Then add on things like health insurance, car insurance, and so on. And we wonder why there’s so much homelessness?
And if you move, you’re dealing with similar problems unless if you can earn money working online and live somewhere like Ohio or Michigan where it’s more affordable.
It’s a mess. It must change
I was homeless in Tampa Florida in the early 2010s I’m happy to hear you are doing better god bless you
Be careful what you wish for. Better aim for another state unless you want to end up homeless again.

@@DP-jy2ge how
maria lozo Thinks she's entitled to continue on being a dysfunctional addict, while people who work hard to be clean and decent, spend their hard earned money on free stuff for her. Because that's what people like this are actually asking for. Our tax dollars.
@@DP-jy2ge the system creates the homeless you have to pay tax anyway do you prefer the tax money to go to aid other countries or wars ...why not sustainable housing ..met engineers in detroit who worked for ford and when the car industry shut down and they lost their jobs not long after they became homeless...
maria lozo It does not. If the system created homelessness, we'd all be homeless. People do it to themselves ... 100%. The only exceptions being teens aging out of foster care (though even they can find work and share with friends, if they're clean and decent). And tax dolkars should NEVER go to housing for these wastrels. Not when our public education and public hospitals need money. Not ever, in fact. Congratulations once again Mark on yet another extremely empathic interview with this lovely young lady on her 51st birthday in Venice Beach ... I love the way you aren’t impatient about squeezing absolutely categorically relevant information out of all of the people you interview; you are patient & recognise their need to tell their stories in their own ways & if they lose track of where they were going along the way because there are so many conflicting elements & often traumatic experiences tied up in their story package, you just gently sympathise with them & encourage them along to the conclusion of their story no matter how confusing it may appear to be at times.
These are all very real, lovelypepe who have taken some really hard knocks in their lives and your kindness & patience with them is highly commendable and makes your program a real joy to watch. I am from coastal Australia with a population of 70,000 people in a radius of just on 100 miles so I don’t get to see this kind of homelessness like you have in the USA, I am a 70yo aged pensioner ... we are lucky enough to receive $944 AUD per fortnight as well as gas, electricity, fuel & rail & bus subsidies from the government and also an Aged Care managed subsidy of $1,350 per month to be spent on services & facilities which make it easier for us to remain in our own homes like cleaners, gardeners, personal care nurses for showering & administering medications, supplying remote controlled hospital beds, raised toilet seas, shower seats, home emergency alarm necklaces & nutritional meals cooked 3 times daily if you want them ... and community bus trips twice monthly to various lovely nurseries & coffee houses in our area or to the movies. I now bless my lucky stars that my parents migrated to Australia from the Uk in 1955 when they did in fact have the option to take their 3 young children to the US back then. I pray for all of your homeless & pray that your exposê’s ultimately hit a raw spot with your Government & they will do something concrete to get all of these wonderful people off the streets. “Invisible cruelty”. Exactly how I felt while being homeless. Worked at Starbucks while I was and watched people spend $60 a week at starbucks and walk right past those begging for help
Worst still, there's people spending trillions to bomb the shit out of each other. Heartless world.
It’s a cruel world and it’s getting worse.💔
The key word is “begging.” I work hard and have no “spare change” to give to an able bodied person who will not work. The “will work for food” sign is a ruse. They want $ they can spend on smokes, drugs, whatever, and they want it without working for it.

She is so sweet and intelligent! I hope she is off the street now and safe. 💖💖
This lady is amazing, beautiful, very well spoken, highly intellegent, good looking, empathetic. She would be an amazing teacher/counsellor etc.
Homelessness can happen in an instant, your partner cheats, leaves, all of a sudden your homeless. All in a day, it happened to me, but thankfully I had a good friend who helped me get back on my feet.
I am praying for you my dear.
She’s the best interview I’ve seen of the homeless, all the best wishes to her, hope she’s doing well.
I sent her a email.but no reply
She didn't come off as typical homeless. Very well spoken , with manner and clean. I wish her the best.
Homeless have rights too.
LIL B`s EVIL TWIN never thought I ever see you again! But yeah due to the narcissistic and apathetic society we live in, it sucks and we as people tend to forget that we’re individuals with needs and needs to see us as human beings instead of something less.

Happy Birthday Sweet Girl! ❤ Glad to hear that you are feeling better. I'm so sorry that you have had such a run of bad luck. You are beautiful and intelligent. I know you will get back on your feet. I will keep you in my prayers. Turn this into a book. Or contact Oprah see if she will back you for a OWN Series on the homeless crisis in America. God bless you! 🌈
Hey Victoria, I see you have been binge watching lots of not just Invisible People videos, but other videos I have online. You must have spent hours watching old videos of me playing drums or when I worked in ministry. Can I ask what drove you to watch so much of Mark Horvath? :)
@@InvisiblePeople
Hi Mark,
Yes I have been watching every video that I can. I find you to be so charismatic so multifaceted, such a compelling speaker. Filled with love and empathy for your fellow man. I love to hear your voice. You just sound so reassuring to me. Like when a person knows that "they are home safe." Just the twinkling in your eyes, your enthusiasm.
The way your face lights up with youthful exuberance when you are giving out socks or other items to people. You seem like a kindred spirit.
Ever since I was a small child. I found that my greatest joy in life has been giving to others. My grandmother used to scold me for giving my toys away when I was little. I tried to explain the joy that it gave me. She never understood. So I see that you love to help others also.
I find the various situations that your life path has taken you on to be fascinating. I have told lots of people in Va. about Invisible People. You really got it going on!
I do all I can in my small town. We are both soldiers in the Army of the Lord.
Glad you and your dear mother had another holiday. That got to me when you said, "My mother had coffee with her friends at church." That was so wonderful it must have seemed like old times to her. I know it brought her great joy.
I worked at a nursing home for a few years. Some patients never had a visitor. That was just so beautiful to me. Love can't be bought. You satisfied her hearts desire. I see you as loyal and selfless. I thank God I found your channel. You are my rock. Stay safe, keep spreading love and joy. Peace 🌈

Have you ever been in a desperate situation like her? After a while that's how it gets, grasping at straws, rushing to speak because nobody will listen or care, and trying to make sense of it all. Life can change in an instant and is often out of the blue and completely beyond our control. Who are we to judge anyone else, especially by a few minutes of footage?
@@WmsYTpage people love judging. We do it so much we don't realize when we're being cruel.
Could also be nervous chatter. I have ADD and jump tangents like that, especially during interviews or having strangers talk to me. Perhaps not of this magnitude, but I get her.

great work that you are doing, it really is! and this lady is amazing, so full of energy and ideas... I really hope she got out of streets.
It looks like you're monitoring these comments. I really appreciate your videos, it humanizes this entire situation. It brutalizes to all of us, including our children who walk by the homeless in the street daily - what does that do to us all? I've been amazed by the insights and honesty of those interviewed - I've wondered at times whether you select purposely people who are more coherent. It's interesting, because it is true that Lisa seems more confused, but that may not be a result of homelessness. One thing that would be valuable - and which you do to some degree - is to help your viewers learn how to best impact this situation, especially on a local level. Thanks for your work.
Great question, and thanks for your kind words. I do try and monitor the best I can. Sadly, I miss a lot of comments.
I don't select people who are more coherent. Truth is, I really try to allow interviews happen organically. As a rule, I never interview anyone severely intoxicated or with severe mental illness. The reason is out of respect. I would not want to be seen on TH-cam when I am drunk. I respect people - all people. Plus, people already believe that homeless people are all drunks and on drugs. That's not the truth, so I try and show the realities that they do not.
Taking this interview as an example, I pretty much ask everyone that seems friendly enough that I feel they may want to share their story. I asked Lisa the moment we first met. She didn't feel like it. It's her choice. I ran into her the next day. We walked for a bit and talked. I asked her again. She didn't want to. Interesting enough, most of the time you'd never know Lisa is homeless by her appearance. When I ran into her right before we recorded this interview, she didn't seem to be her usual self, so I didn't even ask her. Lisa asked me to record her story. We talked about how there may be a better time, but she wanted to share right then. The next day I showed her a little bit of this just to make sure she was OK with how she looked, and she was okay with it. From what I gathered, Lisa wanted it to be real and not a manufactured interview.
I believe that people such as myself that try to document life should not interfere with the life we are working to capture. Yes, my own personal believes and experience comes into play because we all live life through our own filters.
One a normal day I may ask 20 people if they'd like to share their stories. Maybe one or two will say yes. Whether I like the story or not, whether it moves me or not, I will post it. A few of the interviews on this channel I almost didn't upload but the last thing I want is to market to myself. I have protocols in place to make sure we are as authentic as possible - always!
Hope that answers your questions. I stop and speak to everyone. Everyone gets socks. If they are too intoxicated or have an extreme mental illness I do not ask them to be on this channel out of respect to them.
@@InvisiblePeople Thanks for your generous response. I live in Santa Cruz, CA -not sure if you've ever passed through, but there is a large community of homeless (you might consider taping here if you are travelling nearby). While I think there's generally mutual respect between the 'homed' and homeless in this town, I've often wondered what it does to children, growing up in this environment. I hope it doesn't just harden them, but rather gives them incentive to change things. I've noticed in your videos that increasingly it seems a number of those interviewed were previously getting by, and just fell into their situation -especially among older people. At some point, the economic disparity will become unbearable in this country. It's incredibly useful for people (such as myself!) to see these videos, to realize how close many Americans are to landing in the street, and what that means. I've noticed you tend to use the same questions - 'that's no way to live' - and in particular that question often cuts through the initial spin of an answer. I loved the guy who answered your three things question with 'is this like asking what it feels like to be a tree?' - it's answers like that that make us viewers feel connected. As well as the more serious, difficult answers. Your work is appreciated...
We should walk our kids past these people and take the opportunity to teach them two things. 1) this will be you if you are horrible, lazy, and addicted. 2) NEVER give these people charity, as long as there are children starving in the world. Children who did not make bad choices. We want our kids to be clean living, stable, responsible, and hard working. And we want our kids to have the decency to use finite charity resources morally.
Brooke R THAT'S my point. Don't marry an asshole, don't get divorced, don't blow all your money on a dream, and don't treat your friends and/or relatives like crap (then they'll be happy to help if you get laid off).
Beautiful lady , very smart , loving , positive person. God bless you
How pretty she is , look at her teeth, its shining, and her blue eyes
G-d bless you and i love you too Lisa!!!
I have a whole lot of compassion for homeless people! This is why, as i always have food in my car, i always give it out to the homeless. If i am able to, i sit down and talk with them about anything in an attempt to drive out the loneliness they experience along with the horribly rude people which pass by them sometimes yelling and spitting.
That's awesome that you found housing for yourself within the near future!!! However, i would greatly about getting on a greyhound bus and relocating to another state where cost of living and pay is much better. As you said, California is so overloaded with homeless people that the odds of anything really getting much better is slim. At least in the state of Arizona, there are a lot of low-paying jobs available. Also, throughout the state of Arizona, Proposition 206 keeps a minimum wage of $11/hr ($12/hr in january, 2012) which goes quite a bit further than it does in California due to the AZ economy. It also allows for mandatory sick & vacation days within Proposition 206.
So please about relocating!!! G-d be with you!!!

It would be great if you showed more of the area and the conditions. Your camera is right in their face the whole time. i applaud what you are doing, just nice to see more!! Thank you
She’s such a beautiful soul, I hope she’s doing good
What a lovely woman. She has slight neurosis but she is so positive. Her thoughts to jump around a lot though and she is definitely putting a shield up over her depression.
I feel that the next few months are critical for her long term well being, she needs to get somewhere secure, and rapidly. She could work in helping other homeless people, she would be amazing at that.
Heartbreaking to see this in the world’s richest country in 2020, what went wrong?
A slight neurosis? I think most people would be a bit more than slightly neurotic if they found themselves in her position. She seems uncommonly gracious and strong to me. I hope everything works out for her.
Oh my... even homeless in the USA have better teeth than me 😩

I'm Disabled, a Veteran, and have been homeless for two years. I'm not a drug addict, just lost my housing two years ago when the Apartment Complex I was living at was sold to a buyer in Toronto, who promptly notified the tenants living with Section 8 or VASH assistance was given the option to move out or pay full market value rent. I found while looking for a place to move to, that most low income housing was eliminated in this same fashion by greedy investors.
I bought an old van on payments and was forced to start living in it. I did so for a year and was offered a tiny fiberglass trailer on payments. I found that the person I bought it from had mislead me on a clear title, and have had difficulty getting it registered and legal to tow. I have been stranded at a Recreation Area, above Kingman Arizona for seven months now trying to get repairs done to my van. It is no longer safe to drive, and definitely not suitable to tow my trailer. It has been a living hell, upto 128 degrees at times this summer, now dealing with freezing cold at night and heavy winds. Every time I try to get some repairs made, something comes up. I bought a used generator which failed in a couple weeks, had to buy another one, then my emotional support dog Archie was badly bitten and required veterinary care, my air conditioning compressor failed in my Van, I cut my knuckle to the bone and ligaments on some glass discarding some trash which resulted in an Emergency Room Visit. I have been trying to get help, and have not much success. I was accepted for Rapid Rehousing through the Catholic Charities, but have searched all over Mohave County but found I cannot afford an apartment on my disability income. I am now in a panic as I was notified by the Catholic Charities Caseworker handling my information, had their computer stolen and now my personal information has been compromised. I am on a waiting list for Section 8, basically started over. I did not choose to be in this homeless situation, and have been doing my best to deal with everything I have experienced the past 2 years. I had to literally give everything I owned away when I lost my apartment EVERYTHING!, I did try and keep my many tools, but those to were lost by a "friend" who was going but keep them until I get settled, but would never respond to my calls or texts. I am absolutely sick of my life. I don't live anymore, I merely exist, and it's not much of an existence. I have not showered in nearly 8 months, and haven't bathed in over two years since losing my apartment. I have reached out to every VA organization or service center for help, but am ineligible. I served 6 years in The Air National Guard, and was honorably discharged, but still don't meet the requirements as I was on active duty for well over a year with Avionics Technical School, and was activated during Desert Storm, but could not deploy with my unit, as I was a 3 level technician straight out of school. I have no family for support, no friends, only a few people I have met while being homeless. I have had a fellow vet brings some water bottles and food items several months back, but I don't see how I can ever get out of my situation as my limited income doesn't suffice.
