Heavy "losses" of MRT Corp to support socio-economic growth, says Loke

  • The Transport Minister said MRT Corp’s incurred losses were due to the high capital expenditure costs to construct both MRT 1 (Kajang line) and MRT 2 (Putrajaya line), as well as low ticket rates and the ongoing subsidised My50 unlimited travel pass.
The heavy financial “losses” of Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Corp Sdn Bhd reflects its true purpose in supporting long-term socio-economic growth for the country and people, says Anthony Loke.
The Transport Minister told a press conference at Parliament on Wednesday (July 10) that MRT Corp’s incurred losses were due to the high capital expenditure costs to construct both MRT 1 (Kajang line) and MRT 2 (Putrajaya line), as well as low ticket rates and the ongoing subsidised My50 unlimited travel pass.

Government should build more stations underground and not above ground. The reason being those built above ground are mostly along highways which makes access by the walking public dangerous and only possible by feeder buses that are not punctual. I noticed that most of the public transport is taken by foreigners because they don't have a choice. The nearest MRT station near my house in Sri Damansara is a 19 minute walk from my house. It is only partly shaded and I usually have to spend an extra RM4.50 for the park and ride. Luckily I am a senior citizen. Our LRT, MRT and Monorail network in the city centre ie golden triangle is fairly good but not in the residential areas.

Betul, kalau untung lagi bagus lagi baik, semua orang suka. Tapi tak guna pengangkutan awam untung, tapi hanya rakyat yang berduit je boleh guna. Tu bukan pengangkutan awam tapi pengangkutan swasta jawabnya.
Bab "repair" tu cerita lain lah, aku malas nak sembang, nanti sampai pagi tak habis hujah.

Not just financial gains. But quality of life too, maybe unquantifiable. Things need to be fine tuned. Most public transportations are money losing. Like NYC's MTA can only ever expect to get 50% of their running cost from fares alone. It's a huge blackhole. The funds have to come from subsidies, car taxes, etc. No way you can get a public transportation company to break even.

If you want more working people to use MRT, you need to think like passengers that need to arrive for the next appointment on time.
Please turun padang and check most feeder buses are parking at station like UPM and the drivers are enjoying their cigarettes and handphone instead of rest for 5 minutes and move.😢
