  • Here is a simple way to make your own inexpensive reflector oven for baking bread or other items when you are in the wilderness. Weighing about 3 oz., it is quite easily made from items you may have around your house or that can be purchased for less than $5 US. It is highly portable and reusable.

    The Bannock Recipe is:
    3 cups of All-purpose flour
    1 Teaspoon Salt
    2 Tablespoons baking powder
    1 Packet of Butter Buds (Dried Butter Flakes)
    1and 1/4 cups of water
    Mix all dry ingredients together.
    Divide into 3 equal parts and
    Put each 3rd into a Ziploc bag.
    Each Ziploc will then need about
    4 oz. of water each for the dough.
    Knead in bag until dough is ready
    Take out and bake until golden brown
    Enjoy!

    Pops forgot the recipe.
    1 cup flour
    2 tbs powder milk
    1 tsp baking powder
    1/4 tsp salt
    2 Tbs sugar
    1 Tbs bacon grease ,Butter or olive oil ( you could substitute probably butter buds that you have in your recipe)
    Optional I sometimes add raisins, dried cranberries and chopped walnuts or pecans I don't measure but I estimate maybe maybe about 1/8 cup of fruit and 1/16 cup of nuts.

    That was kind of cool. You actually baked bread with reflected heat in an open container. You didn't even have to create a box or pot with a cover. Awesome.

    This looks terrific. I will make one or more. I like that the campfire is the source of reflective heat for cooking. Reflective cooking in the dark or low sunlight doesn't worry me. Reflective cooking using the sun when it's very intense can be really dangerous. About ten years ago I bought two "solar cookers" that shipped directly from an overseas producer. They were dish shaped, on a stand with a pedestal in the middle of the dish which held the cookpot. It took me hours to assemble each one. Where I live, the UV index in summer is 14-15. The cooker was so bright I had to wear sunglasses to cook. That should have warned me. Before long I caught my clothes on fire just standing next to it. I "closed up shop" securing its protective cover (I thought). A few days later the wind lifted the edge of its cover, exposing only a bit of the metal to the sun. The cover caught fire and this spread. Dogs warned me. I was barely able to put out the fire with my garden hose. That cooker was so badly charred that we scrapped it. The other resides in a shed and someday may see the light of day again when the sun is very very dim.

    Nice oven James. That bread turned out great. I purchased a reflector oven years ago. One of my favourite things to make is a large oatmeal muffin. I found that if you buy a muffin mix that is low fat, it’s a just add water. For your oven a small foil pan with some parchment paper “Might” work good. Only one way to find out 😂. Another item I want to make in the reflector oven is the coffee cup cakes that you make in the microwave. I’ve tried these in a small solar oven and they work good.

    • @WayPointSurvival
      @WayPointSurvival  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! I was wondering if I should put the bread on a small pan of some kind but I thought it might keep the heat from getting to the bottom of the bread efficiently. Those other ideas sound great! Thank you so much for watching and commenting!

    • @alf3553
      @alf3553 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      WayPoint Survival
      You might be able to use a little parchment paper directly on the rack just to support the bread. I made a pizza once and I used a small stainless steel plate as a pizza pan. This did not work, the top was perfect and the bottom didn’t cook.

    Pretty cool. I had a store bought one a buddy gave me that was light and easy to set up. It worked but I misplaced it somewhere during my many moves and haven't found it yet. I don't think I would actually hike any distance with one since it takes too long to cook anything and when I was doing a lot of hiking my concern was with making as much distance as I could per day VS kicking it in camp for long periods other that to just get some sleep. I went through a lot of bannock when I hiked the PCT but I just twisted it on a stick, stuck the stick in the ground next to my fire and rotated it as necessary until it was done. Just faster that way so I could get to bed. When I do some truck camping with my shooting buddies though I have a piece of a big commercial pizza oven pizza stone I take out and I use it here on my homestead for making pizzas outdoors particularly when it is too hot to cook indoors. I have a big 16 inch cast iron skillet I found in the trash some years ago that the handle had broken off of. I ground what was left of the handle off and brazed a piece of rebar bent into a loop on the bottom of it so I could use it upside down as a lid with a handle that I could hook. I just put some rocks under the corners of the stone next to my fire, shovel coals underneath it and shovel some coals over the top of my upside down skillet to preheat them. I put my pizza ingredients together, put the pizza on the stone and put the skillet over the pizza with hot coals on top of it and in about 14 minutes me and my buddies can chow down. It would work good for about anything baked but I just like to do pizzas while Club Med style camping. Fun stuff. Thanks for the video!

    You can buy aluminum signs at Home Depot for just a few bucks that cut in the Sam fashion would make a more rigid but still light oven and the finish is matte but still reflective.
    This design reminds me of the old Boy Scout ovens that folks would make from the old 1 gallon thinner or mineral spirits cans in the 60s and 70s, you ever see those or make one?
    Brings back memories, loved the vid and helping me remember something I had forgotten all about!

      Thank you, my friend! I had this idea before I watched Mark Young make his. I like his design but I feel that mine, although smaller, is simpler to make. Well Congrats JB . IMO this is the very best idea / project you have come up with . Just outstanding !!! The only thing I might do , is use another clip on the back, and part of the grill as a height adjustment for the angle . Thinking in terms of cutting a HALF a ladder with half rungs out of the grill , and using those half rungs for the angle adjustment through the clip wires / handles of the clip . That way you wouldn't even have to poke a hole in the back of the oven . . Also , this gives me a outstanding idea of using the "BIG" Turkey Roaster pans the same way in the winter as a fire reflector !! Absolutely for sure it would work , Could use a couple . Outstanding idea & video !!

    • @indycharlie
      @indycharlie 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm, now looking at it and thinking about it further . You could cut a ladder out of the grill , bend one of the clip handles so it will go through between two rungs and wire it there, or use part of the grill as a latch / keep .

    James, I think I'd used a Broaster pan to make that with. Got several grills to make that work. Good idea.

    One of the first Boy Scout Badges was making toast & bread w/ a campfire toaster similar to this, except it was a steel box closed in like a oven w/ a door, it face away from the fire so it heated from the back side like a oven.. I don't see them anymore.

      Very cool! You can still buy those type of ovens but they are definitely not common anymore.
