From my point of view, it's not winter if it's not below freezing and no snow/ice on the ground. This video also made me realise we're definitely used to rather different temperatures, as the amount of clothes you wear, would make me sweat to pieces in the temps you're riding in. My longest and coldest winter bike ride was around minus 15 degrees C, and lasted about 3 hours. Ice and hard packed snow has become my favourite surface to ride on during winter, thanks to proper, chunky studded tyres. Good boots, two layers of socks if necessary, and wind proof lobster gloves plus sensible layers of wool, especially on the upper body (which should also have a wind proof jacket), does the trick.
Great video Manon and Conor! Of course winter is actually more fun and bearable in Canada because it is usually snowing and below 0°C so as long as you dress as for cross country skiing, you don't get drenched! Snowflakes are more fun than rain and studded snow tires keep you from wiping out on ice. Fenders are a must! And downhill ski goggles and leather gauntlets help too. I agree with Manon about "indoors". My garage is a tent but I still end up bare armed on the turbo. Bit boring though so I donn headphones and wireless, vary the efforts just to keep interest. What I find helps (with the fingers at least) is to give them a wiggle from time to time (restore circulation). The other benefit of inside is that you can fit in 1/2 hour or so and not get stranded out in the dark. It won't suit the bike primpers, pf course, but I have mounted a home made plastic wind guard in front of each hand. I've wasted much money finding warm cycling clothes in temperatures below 0 degrees when I ride in conditions up to -25 when it gets cold in Toronto Canada. Studded wide tires, Lights and warm but light and breathable clothes are a must for me. You'll be riding much slower in winter weather why put focus on tight Cycling Gear for Aero gains when you'll be traveling from 10-25kph in the snow? Also I view winter outdoor riding as resistance training for the summer over 4 Canadian winters I've steadily put on more speed on average when the spring and summer hits because of riding in adverse conditions.

I disagree with Manon there - I don’t stop at all on the cold winter rides and much rather enjoy the hot chocolate at the end! The worst thing for me is to get out AGAIN after warming up at the Cafe, maybe your clothes are slightly wet and will soon get very cold. So, no stopping for me!
How to beat winter? This year? Z.W.I.F.T. But seriously, bundle and layer up. If temps are below 40F, out come the heated socks! Another mental trick for me is to accept the fact that long rides are OUT below freezing (not safe from an exposure standpoint), with that in mind what I do is to ride the temp. If it's 25F out, then the ride is 25 miles. You get the idea. The colder, the less time you spend out in it.
Heated socks for 40F? You must have very delicate feet🙃 As for safety exposure, riding below freezing isn't going to hurt you. I lived in Wisconsin for 6 years and saw plenty of people twice my age riding when it was -20f and colder
@veganpotterthevegan3413 yep delicate feet aka poor circulation, no fun when the toes and ball of your foot goes numd. I've been out a few times in single digits but the right kit makes all the difference.

I wish one of the tips would be for GCN cyclists and other cyclists to wear bright/reflective jackets a colour easily seen especially in UK and Ireland where on those cold winter days there is often low sunshine and driver struggle to see you. All black is not good at anytime but especially in winter.
my main problem s dealing with sweat, I layer up, have decent stuff but first big hill I sweat and it all stays in my clothes, even with good wicking stuff and a breathable jacket. mostly this is fine while I keep going but stopping at the cafe I am freezing and second half of the ride is unpleasant.
Put your lights into small transparent plastic bag to save them from the harsh conditions. Even good lights can withstand the constant torrent of water and mud only for so long.
32.5 MHz for GCN and 76.3 / 78.6 for GMBN and EMBN. They are harder, they need more bandwidth. GTN is on 106.4 MHz since they are even harder. Not for when they are riding/jogging/swimming around Hawaii of course, that'd only need some 60-65 MHz to be honest. But they might do a hairy chested cold-water-snow&ice triathlon at some point.
But cold weather is different in different areas..I'm at 5000 ft elevation but damp cold would be hard too. I don't like bulky winter clothes but I'm going for it even a few miles or less Lol
Just adding on to a few comments I’ve seen, why do the presenters always wear black? That end shot they aren’t visible at all going down the road, why don’t they wear brighter colours? especially in winter?
I slid out on some black ice this morning and got 8 stitches to my eyebrow. Not a great way to start the day. Anyone got any tips for commuting when it's below freezing? Don't do it?

Loving the "oooh he clamped the top tube" comments lol
Guess it depends if its "holding" or "gripping" really.
My inner thighs and privet parts get cold after 20min is there something i can wear under my winter bib's, or even over it?
Easiest answer, it isn’t winter it is summer, arrrh the sunshine. 😂
I sure hope that Orbea Conor had clamped on the top tube isn’t a carbon bike… 😮
Wahoo Kickr.
OK BUT ANY LINK TO BUY EVERYTHING?
Can we have a feature on winter gloves please? I wear two pairs and it stops me if it’s around freezing.
I've been jumping on my turbo in my shed in sub zero temperatures. Who needs a fan?! I've got a ride planned from Bristol to Preston mid-Feb that I'm aiming for
Lol no lights , and mudguards always had them on my winter bikes.
My usual bike path has been plagued with huge patches of black ice recently. Thankfully I'm holding off buying myself a road bike until spring so each time I come a cropper on my old Stumpjumper I'm effectively saving money by not trashing a more delicate frame. #logic
Hahaha stay safe please!!!! Great to hear you are investing in a new bike, have you got any bit rides planned? 👀
@@gcn haha, thanks. I did a solo 35 miler on Saturday which was great (with no break dancing, yay!). I have a selfie from half way but I don't think the cycling world is ready to see me in my lycra pants just yet. 🕺😁 No other big rides planned yet but a 50 miler is on the cards. Can't wait until spring and a new bike! Cheers folks. I love the channel and you're a big inspiration. 👍
Wear a pair of nitrile gloves under your main gloves keeps the hands nice and toasty
How do you all keep your lungs from burning in the cold air?
Any recommendations to keep glasses from fogging when having something over one's mouth and nose?
Breathe through your nose. It warms the air and adds nitric oxide, making the oxygen easier to absorb.
To keep the glasses from fogging, you start peddling 😂
@@alaefarmestatesllc Spot on. Stop at traffic lights, get steam. Gels and treatments for lenses are okay but I had to buy non-fogging lenses which only work some of the time. Bring on summer.
Lobster gloves are a good thing, if it's really cold!!!
👌
All-black kits for winter riding?? Yikess
I wish one of the tips would be for GCN cyclists and other cyclists to wear bright/reflective jackets a colour easily seen especially in UK and Ireland where on those cold winter days there is often low sunshine and driver struggle to see you. All black is not good at anytime but especially in winter.
How about fuel and drinks ?
What gloves do you have for the winter 🤔
@@maximraketalife thanks
My top tip is to ride with others as you then have an incentive to commit.
my main problem s dealing with sweat, I layer up, have decent stuff but first big hill I sweat and it all stays in my clothes, even with good wicking stuff and a breathable jacket. mostly this is fine while I keep going but stopping at the cafe I am freezing and second half of the ride is unpleasant.
Get a Merino wool underlayer, ware it directly on bare skin
Put your lights into small transparent plastic bag to save them from the harsh conditions. Even good lights can withstand the constant torrent of water and mud only for so long.
Great little hack! Do you find it effects the light? 👀
The last 2 videos make me think Conor needs a mic that can survive the winter, too.
Sounded pretty muffled
"Take care of your bike"
**clamps bike by top tube**
Ive never seen that before, what's wrong with it?
Also chancing clothes Is important. U cant stop to a cafe without start againg the ride, u r wet and u will soffer cold.
My tuning is off, what is your frequency again?
32.5 MHz for GCN and 76.3 / 78.6 for GMBN and EMBN. They are harder, they need more bandwidth. GTN is on 106.4 MHz since they are even harder. Not for when they are riding/jogging/swimming around Hawaii of course, that'd only need some 60-65 MHz to be honest. But they might do a hairy chested cold-water-snow&ice triathlon at some point.
What mud guards is Connor running? Every time I look for some they always look bulky and ugly
Was that a GCN presenter clamping his bike on the top tube?? :P
But cold weather is different in different areas..I'm at 5000 ft elevation but damp cold would be hard too. I don't like bulky winter clothes but I'm going for it even a few miles or less Lol
LIGHTS, LIGHTS, LIGHTS! unless you're gcn...
Either Manon is an excellent actress or she is really cold...
Just adding on to a few comments I’ve seen, why do the presenters always wear black? That end shot they aren’t visible at all going down the road, why don’t they wear brighter colours? especially in winter?
I switch to MTB, unfortunately i had to sell my gravel bike
Connor: "Look after your bike"
Also Connor: *clamps the top tube of the bike*
For a start stop wearing black unless you have a death wish
I slid out on some black ice this morning and got 8 stitches to my eyebrow. Not a great way to start the day. Anyone got any tips for commuting when it's below freezing? Don't do it?
Snow tires.
spikes are essential on ice
Studded tyres. They grip like velcro in comparison. Bought them this year and they allowed me to just keep riding to work. Not a single scare so far, even when it is below freezing riding up/down steep ramps.
Done the black ice thing and not anxious for a repeat. Best wishes for fast recovery.
How to beat winter? Live in Florida!😂
Don't ride on ice. I did that came off and I'm still feeling groggy 3 days later. I was wearing a helmet and riding wide tyres.
It's best avoided when possible, sorry to hear you are not 100% yet! Take it easy and hopefully you will be back on the bike soon.
@@gcn Thanks. I bought a MIPS helmet afterwards to better protect myself, which is something GCN has previously recommended
I think you need to invest in some new mic's for filming.
Hope they realize the sahara desert is in the northern hemisphere too, not just the UK... maybe talking in latitude could serve you better, of just mention "england" or "the UK" if you'r talking about english weather in January...
Probably wearing a black castelli total suit Is not a good idea.....
You missed half of the cold time. Why not do that video in september ;)
Somehow sitting in a café all wet from thé ride doesn't feel like a Fun thing to do to me ..
