INTENSE South Dakota Blizzard

A major winter system moved into the Northern Plains on December 13, 2022 bringing freezing rain to parts of eastern South Dakota with a relentless blizzard in western South Dakota. The system crawled east with blizzard conditions expanding across all of South Dakota from December 14 into December 16, 2022.
I documented this major blizzard from the Watertown, South Dakota area on December 15th and December 16th. Up to 6 inches of snow fell on top of a half inch of ice that had previously fallen a couple days prior. Power outages spread over the eastern part of the state as winds up to 60 mph were observed throughout the event. Visibilities dropped down to only a few feet leaving numerous vehicles stranded across the region. Blizzard conditions began waning late on December 16th.

TY. the first video. actually showing what a whiteout looks like. been their plenty. Was better to drive at night without headlights on. Stationed in ND. In -30 -50 -70 and the lowest i ever experienced was -100 including wind chill. I am forever grateful for my Cold surviver training...

Farm has 12 foot drifts in all the nice places like four of them aren't too bad just 7 feet but these 3 12 footers are just great. Got to love a good snow.

It's 78 here in Baja. Time to start up the BBQ, mix up a bowl full of Margaritas, and put on some more SUN SCREEN. I think I'll head to the local topless beach and check out the wildlife. It's a bitch but somebody has to do it.

I'll never understand the mentality of people who drive with no visibility and put other's safety in jeopardy for their poor decision making. There's absolutely no excuse to drive in those conditions. It's warned far ahead of time and anyone can adjust their plans one way or another if they must be somewhere other than home.

For the truckers, I am guessing that it is about pressure to make a living and putting food on the table for the family. The same reason that good men have always risked their safety. A better question for you to ask is why haven't the authorities shut down the highways until it is safe to continue? That way they will have coverage with their employers. My Father always said, "Think before speaking"

Actually, many of the blizzards are not forecast at all. Anytime there’s snow on the ground even a little bit and the wind picks up, those white out conditions can hit within minutes. Absolutely no warning!

Just find a hotel 🏨
and ride out the storm
