Now 3 years later living cash only at 24 my husband hated it at first but loves the reactions when using cash. Imagine paying a 4400 car repair bill in cash and the owner says "You were raised well". It's humbling and rewarding.
My marriage was cheap. We went to court, got married, and that was it. Parking was 16 dollars, the marriage certificate and license was about 40 dollars. Still happily married and don’t regret spending tens of thousands on a tradition that is ridiculously overpriced
Kathy Leighton you are missing out on huge perks. I have a credit card that I pay off every month and always have points to buy things or travel. I love it!! You also get tons of protection on any purchases you make. Again the trick is to pay off the credit card every month.

rainepanda so true we have a 2005 which we got when we put down a 1998 Nissan última plus 2000 cash from a car dealer are truck use of course but the Nissan last is a good 7 years oh and it took us hours away from the city we live speaking of car service we just need right know a oil change and I'm hoping that's all but I'm thankful to have a mechanic husband 🙂for small work but he will get help by his friend who knows a lot more of mechanic 😁

I also purchased several thousand shares of Visa and MasterCard in my Roth 401k long ago when they were around $6 a share because I have been learning all about personal finance and investing since grade school. Could see the future use and abuse of credit cards. Credit card debt crossed one trillion this year. These two credit cards crossed $100 a share earlier this year and I'm getting over $500 a month reinvested dividends. You have to think beyond just learning about finance and be more proactive. They might have luxurious buildings but I'm retiring early and these two credit card companies will be paying my medical insurance for the next 10 years until Medicare kicks in and beyond. I recommend reading the book "The Millionaire Next Door"

Penguin Community children benefit greatly from private school . my parents sent me and my sister to private school k-8th grade. Private schools have better teachers,books,ciriculum and have a much better school experience . Not only that but it looks great on a college application and college is easier because you know more and in general you know more than most of the population I grew up like this family when I was in private school we were frugal we lived in a nice area but didnt go on vacations and my parents were careful with money. A lot of public schools are terrible especially down south. In the end its worth it

It really isn't that hard to live below one's means. It takes discipline for sure, but it's a matter of creating a new habit and getting rid of old ones. Once you get rid of debt it's amazing how freeing living below your means is.

My vehicles are paid for in cash and I have enough money saved up to buy a house if I want. You could have planned ahead and done it on your own for a lot cheaper.
A house is an investment for future generations of your family is what my dad taught me. You may not necesarily have the money to pay it off in this moment, but if you and future generations continue to make payments on time, I say a house is a pretty solid investment regardless of it being paid off in whole or not. People who are financially responsible, I believe should live over their means within reason if it is an investment that will benefit future generations.

(small one) I honestly think it is feasible to buy even houses or land buy saving up. no loans needed. I hope you are able to find a good place. :)

I worked for a temp to hire on agency and got hired on later, making only $12.00 an hour, I had to pay only my car off, buy a new cell phone, but by the time I got hired on, I got everything paid off.
That nice flat, sunny front yard can be turned into vegetables and fruits for the family. There are great seed companies that sell packets for $1.50 or less and you can get a huge harvest, depending on variety. Also, saving green onion ends, garlic cloves and other re-sprouting vegetables for planting can add lots of good food for no extra out-of-pocket expenses. It doesn't all have to come from a store. Being food independent is great.
Sounds good until you get robbed. It’s the credit card company’s problem if they steal your card and start using it. It’s your problem if they steal your cash or use your debit card linked to your money directly.
Paying your car insurance, mortgage/rent, utilities, water, and phone bill on time builds your credit. You don't need a credit card to build it. I bought a house at 4.25% interest. I have no debt (besides my mortgage) and no credit cards. Cash only for everything!! I love Dave Ramsey too.

I would love to do this. I just really don't know where to start considering we have a fairly large credit card debt and are in what's considered low income. I've been trying harder to not use the credit card for buying things at Walmart, using cash as much as possible, but that isn't always possible because we do run out sometimes. Oh wow, this sounds pretty special to me. In switzerland usually people save money until they can buy things. But unfortunately many people also are starting to spend money they don't have, which in my opinion is a huge problem.
Yea my mom always told me not to buy what you can't afford and pay with money you have. Now I have zero credit. Zero credit. Try getting anything with zero credit. A car or home. And I married my husband and found out he has a shit load of student debt. Like enough debt to be paying on a house and his credit is poor because of it. His parents just took him to the bank and had him sign loan papers without explaining anything. When we got married I went to his moms place and she just handed me all his loan bills and said here. He didn't even know he had so many loans and they would just pay on them now and then. They dumped them all on us at once. I had never seen that much debt in my life. Worst part is he didn't even finish the 4 yr college because they couldn't afford it!!! If I had known him while he was in school I would have helped him get every scholarship and grant available b4 getting a loan. That's what I did for school. In the end we both went the wrong rout. You need credit!!! You also need your credit to be good.
same here cash only! I do have debit card but it a prepaid one so I reload it as needed. mostly to pay bills or buy things cheaper online than in actual store! online shopping is cheaper now to me.

My mind was blown when I grew up and realized everyone has a credit card. This family might not have nice vacations and shiny new things but the are richer than anyone who is paying off a credit card.

Well I'm glad they came up that way that's awesome for us I am my wife and I have a husband and I have five children who are all growing up and on their own do not have no home anymore but we do have two dogs we both are on disability and we live off $2,500 a month our rent is 800 a month so what we have left most of it goes towards food we budget and we live on calf as well we don't have credit cards we do not have a car we do not own a house we pay rent I do not have to pay insurance I don't have to pay car insurance those are the ways that we save money but we do not spend money stupidly as well we save on things like buying new clothes we go to thrift stores yard sales things like that just save money but I do not save on food because I'm a diabetic Sweat by the food that we need and that's where most of our money goes so thank you for the show it was pretty

My take home pay is over $7k/month and live on less than $1500/month and the rest go to savings,Roth 401k,Roth IRA emergency funds,investments etc.. No kids,not married,and BastardKidFree® so no government or courts to tell me what to do. Girlfriend has her own money,home,etc..
Try living on $800 a month...btw: better hope those "Roth IRAs" are still available by the time you need them...remember 2008...can happen again at anytime!

I started using only cash to pay for food and stuff, and use my credit card if I only need something and can pay it off asap, but am not carrying enough cash on me.
without a credit card you'll never have credit...sounds like an amazing idea until you need to buy a car or get a loan for a house then your credit worthiness is crap...get a credit card and only use it for the essentials and pay for it with your bank account in full every month. same as cash but increases credit worthiness. Also credit cards have rewards you can cash in on like cash back & points.
yes but it's damn near impossible to raise your score in a short amount of time esp if you are asking for a lot of money also these "ways" almost involves some form of "credit" repayment like rent, or repaying student loans or taking out a loan and repaying it.

Nothing wrong with what they are doing, in fact, if more people did the same thing they would have a lot less problems. Our family did the same thing and have remained Debt Free for the las 13 years. When you pay cash, it makes you slow down and think more about the purchase before you purchase the item.

My parents raised me this way. But only because we were poor. Once we became more stable, my mom began using one credit card. But she always pays off on time though.
My family kind of does that, if something is broken we will fix it right away but we barely use credit cards, most debit and cash. My dad teaches us well with money so right now I am in high school and probably have more money than all the students because of all the tips my dad gives me. As long as you save your money and actually think is it worth spending $100 of dollars on something stupid you’ll start seeing your bank account go up.
In alot of families, If you want to go to college, you make good grades and get scholarships....or you get a part time job and pay for it...Parents dont owe their kids a paid for college education, if they want it, they need to earn it.....

This isn't very smart if you are looking to one day buy a house using a mortgage. You have to build a credit history in order to get approved for a loan of that size. The best thing to do would be use a credit card but pay it off each month.

I worked for a temp to hire on agency and got hired on later, making only $12.00 an hour, I had to pay only my car off, buy a new cell phone, but by the time I got hired on, I got everything paid off.
That nice flat, sunny front yard can be turned into vegetables and fruits for the family. There are great seed companies that sell packets for $1.50 or less and you can get a huge harvest, depending on variety. Also, saving green onion ends, garlic cloves and other re-sprouting vegetables for planting can add lots of good food for no extra out-of-pocket expenses. It doesn't all have to come from a store. Being food independent is great.
Sounds good until you get robbed. It’s the credit card company’s problem if they steal your card and start using it. It’s your problem if they steal your cash or use your debit card linked to your money directly.

Paying your car insurance, mortgage/rent, utilities, water, and phone bill on time builds your credit. You don't need a credit card to build it. I bought a house at 4.25% interest. I have no debt (besides my mortgage) and no credit cards. Cash only for everything!! I love Dave Ramsey too.

I would love to do this. I just really don't know where to start considering we have a fairly large credit card debt and are in what's considered low income. I've been trying harder to not use the credit card for buying things at Walmart, using cash as much as possible, but that isn't always possible because we do run out sometimes. Does any know of any programs to help with getting on the right track?

Yea my mom always told me not to buy what you can't afford and pay with money you have. Now I have zero credit. Zero credit. Try getting anything with zero credit. A car or home. And I married my husband and found out he has a shit load of student debt. Like enough debt to be paying on a house and his credit is poor because of it. His parents just took him to the bank and had him sign loan papers without explaining anything. When we got married I went to his moms place and she just handed me all his loan bills and said here. He didn't even know he had so many loans and they would just pay on them now and then. They dumped them all on us at once. I had never seen that much debt in my life. Worst part is he didn't even finish the 4 yr college because they couldn't afford it!!! If I had known him while he was in school I would have helped him get every scholarship and grant available b4 getting a loan. That's what I did for school.
In the end we both went the wrong rout. You need credit!!! You also need your credit to be good.

same here cash only! I do have debit card but it a prepaid one so I reload it as needed. mostly to pay bills or buy things cheaper online than in actual store! online shopping is cheaper now to me.

The fact that this is a news story is crazy to me. Everyone should be like this not depending on borrowing and being In Debt. This is how I grew up. My mind was blown when I grew up and realized everyone has a credit card. This family might not have nice vacations and shiny new things but the are richer than anyone who is paying off a credit card.

Well I'm glad they came up that way that's awesome for us I am my wife and I have a husband and I have five children who are all growing up and on their own do not have no home anymore but we do have two dogs we both are on disability and we live off $2,500 a month our rent is 800 a month so what we have left most of it goes towards food we budget and we live on calf as well we don't have credit cards we do not have a car we do not own a house we pay rent I do not have to pay insurance I don't have to pay car insurance those are the ways that we save money but we do not spend money stupidly as well we save on things like buying new clothes we go to thrift stores yard sales things like that just save money but I do not save on food because I'm a diabetic Sweat by the food that we need and that's where most of our money goes so thank you for the show it was pretty

My take home pay is over $7k/month and live on less than $1500/month and the rest go to savings,Roth 401k,Roth IRA emergency funds,investments etc..

Been cash only for a couple off years. It really works, my partner gets paid monthly, so we have shuffled our weekly bills and saved heaps. Also we do the cash en envelope system..
I do the similar thing. I thankfully have an ok job, and never collected credit card debt, but I would always impulse things and use my credit card and not think about it. I started using only cash to pay for food and stuff, and use my credit card if I only need something and can pay it off asap, but am not carrying enough cash on me.
My family does that too. We have been our whole life. It is not very hard.

without a credit card you'll never have credit...sounds like an amazing idea until you need to buy a car or get a loan for a house then your credit worthiness is crap...get a credit card and only use it for the essentials and pay for it with your bank account in full every month. same as cash but increases credit worthiness. Also credit cards have rewards you can cash in on like cash back & points.

yes but it's damn near impossible to raise your score in a short amount of time esp if you are asking for a lot of money also these "ways" almost involves some form of "credit" repayment like rent, or repaying student loans or taking out a loan and repaying it.

ive never had a credit card and my husband hasn't had one in YEARS. we were able to buy a home because we put down a decent down payment and our monthly payments were pretty low so we would always double up. its possible it just takes A WHILE lol

Nothing wrong with what they are doing, in fact, if more people did the same thing they would have a lot less problems. Our family did the same thing and have remained Debt Free for the las 13 years. When you pay cash, it makes you slow down and think more about the purchase before you purchase the item.

I made it for 9 years living cash only. It's not always easy when there are car repairs and medical expenses but it proves that it can be done with planning.

My family kind of does that, if something is broken we will fix it right away but we barely use credit cards, most debit and cash. My dad teaches us well with money so right now I am in high school and probably have more money than all the students because of all the tips my dad gives me. As long as you save your money and actually think is it worth spending $100 of dollars on something stupid you’ll start seeing your bank account go up.

This isn't very smart if you are looking to one day buy a house using a mortgage. You have to build a credit history in order to get approved for a loan of that size. The best thing to do would be use a credit card but pay it off each month.
thats true, I only use my debit card but just got a secured credit card that Im only going to use for $20 worth of gas a month just to build credit. I understand not wanting to use credit cause I hate spending money I dont have, but I also want good credit.
