Do you know that actually Alagna's version is one of the most complete version and one of the most respectful of the original orchestral version of La Cumparsita? I believe this tribute, performed in a remarkable good style, deserves congratulations. All the more so that it does have the merit of skillfully reconciling two warring brothers of Uruguay and Argentine, around this beautiful tango. Alagna gave some explanations about his tribute in a book written in French, I translate it for you in English below to anyone interested in:
“I made an original adaptation of the famous Uruguayan tango La Cumparsita, popularized by the famous interpretation by Carlos Gardel. Uruguayans and Argentines have been quarrelling since ever about the authorship of this tango. The music was composed by Gerardo Matos Rodríguez, a young 18-year-old Uruguayan musician at the time, around 1915. A certain Roberto Firpo, an Argentinian, then made a musical arrangement of this instrumental composition and added lyrics. A few years later, two Argentines, Enrique Maroni and Pascual Contursi, produced a new version, with new lyrics. This is the version sung by Carlos Gardel. Matos Rodríguez, who had sold his rights when he was still a juvenile, succeeds, with this detail, in getting it back and gave yet another version, with yet different lyrics. It’s this new third version that the great Tito Schipa was to record. As for me, I liked the different versions very much, but I wanted to pay tribute to the very first composition, so I made an adaptation mixing both Uruguayan and Argentinian lyrics by attaching them to the original instrumental version. What today makes my version the most complete one …” (Roberto Alagna, Mon Dictionnaire Intime, Ed. Le Passeur 2019)
Take care everybody! Viva music and music lovers :)

Pourquoi la langue anglaise n’est-elle pas traduite? Tout le monde n’est pas anglophone….

I also recommend the version by VIRGINIA LUQUE. She lives out the flare of Argentine tango.

Suerte.
