      Newer revisions of the VG249Q and all VG249Q1As use a BOE-based panel (TPM238WF1-FHBNG0) i think the GR version also uses the same panel, so those settings on your review sadly dont count on newer models made in december 2020 and so on :(

    This is exactly the type of review and information I was looking for when looking to buy a new monitor. So many other "reviewer" goofballs spend 10 minutes unboxing the product and dicking around with all the obvious stuff. You get down to the important nuances of what makes monitors different, and because of that, I decided to buy this monitor and I made sure to use your affiliate link in the description to hopefully support your channel and the work you do. Thank you!

    with actual testing numbers and calibration, not just reading specs out loud.
    I only see this level on some of the biggest TH-cam channels, except they usually don't care much about 1080p 144hz anymore...

    I'm using this monitor with the PS5 and can confirm you can get 120Hz refresh rate with this. But first you need to go in the PS5 settings > "Save Data and Game/App Settings" and enable "Performance Mode" and once you start up a game like CoD the monitor switches to 120Hz.

    10:35 Ok, now regarding the overdrive settings... I've found out that in most games, especially older ones which have flat, detailed textures (foliage, rooftops etc) high, and even default overdrive setting tends to cause a lot of shimmer and flicker when looking at those textures and moving the camera. The overdrive is causing some sort of overshoot which causes it. When TraceFree is disabled, there is zero flicker and shimmer, and when set to 20, it is just barely noticeable, but highly acceptable and not bothersome anymore, so that's the setting i would recommend. Panel is already blazing fast, so you are not losing much performance, anyway.

    Great video. Just one thing to clarify though. You don’t need HDMI 2.0 to do 120hz on Xbox one x/s. HDMI 1.4 is perfectly capable of up to 144 hz at 1080p. I have this monitor connected to my Xbox one x and it immediately gave me the option to select 120hz. Makes input lag very low and responsive. Most people have problems with there monitor because their particular monitor may not support 120hz even though it may be a 144hz monitor. Read the specs and make sure that any monitor supports 120hz and whatever resolution you want. It’s usually called “timings” at the very end of a user manual. Great video though!!

I have two of these the other for my son and we both can do 120hz. You don’t need hdmi 2.0 to do 120hz. It’s about if your monitor suppprts 120hz with specific timings used by Xbox. That’s why I stick with asus monitors. They usually always work fine.

    Been using my VG249Q since september of last year. The monitor is amazing! My only complaint is 2 dead pixels(close to the outside of the monitor) and a stuck pixel in the right corner. I was planning on getting a replacement but decided not to since I could almost never notice them unless I was 1 inch away from the screen. In every other aspect the monitor is great, but the greens are a little over-powering so I have my OSD settings set to R: 100 G: 90 B: 100. Otherwise, this monitor is lovely, and at the deal I got it for($170), it is one of the best priced monitors I've ever seen.

    • @onezeee
      @onezeee ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sergiosolis9395 Nope! Still running just as great as when I got it. I upgraded to a 1080p240hz Viewsonic XG2431 for my main monitor and am still using this monitor as my second on a monitor arm. The included stand is honestly one of the best I've used, I just wanted an arm for the clean double monitor look. Only change is I'm now using R: 99 G: 96 and B: 100 rather than the above settings. I realized I wasn't on Racing mode which was causing worsened color accuracy and contrast, but with the above settings it's great. If you're considering buying this, unless you are getting a deal on it for under say $130, I would honestly just recommend buying a Gigabyte G24F 2 for $150. It has 180hz as opposed to 144 on this, better response times and input lag, and a cheaper price. The OG G24F is also pretty much the same monitor as the G24F 2 just with slightly slower response times and a lower refresh rate. But like I said if you're getting a killer deal on the VG249Q, go for it! I loved my time with it as my main and it's absolutely perfect for a second monitor(a little expensive to buy specifically for a second monitor, but great nonetheless).

    I really appreciate your reviews. You have a strong opinion based on your own measurements.
    The Asus VG249Q as well as many other monitors use frame rate control (FRC) to increase the color depth from 6 to 8 bit. Can you explain how FRC affects gaming and photo processing?

    • @techlessYT
      @techlessYT 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Glad you like my reviews!
      If FRC isn't implement too well this can increase visible banding. This doesn't really matter for gaming but can be distracting when editing photos - it's hard to know whether banding is present in the photo or if it's just a monitor artefact. Though really well implemented 6 bit + FRC isn't really discernable from true 8 bit.

    • @betternot1376
      @betternot1376 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@techlessYT Cheers for your reply! But let me get this right: With FRC increased visual banding is less probable?
      What I ask myself: If one and the same pixel switches between two colours to imitate a specific color while I'm gaming, isn't it dividing the refresh rate by two? I also read about the possibility of flickering in darker color areas, did you notice any?

    • @techlessYT
      @techlessYT 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well, without FRC a 6 bit panel would have terrible banding. So yeah it certainly helps. Whether it comes close to a real 8 bit panel depends on the implementation.
      I've heard about FRC flickering, but haven't seen anything like that yet. Ideally the frequency should be very high and therefore not apparent to the bare eye.

    • @betternot1376
      @betternot1376 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@techlessYT I guess FRC is rather used with higher refresh rate monitors so it won't flicker as with 60Hz monitors which would propably result in a perceivable flicker.
      If I could wish for a review, I would ask you to have a look at the Acer Nitro XV242YP. I bearly find any informations on this specific monitor besides the usual retail informations. From what I found online HDMI 2.0 is guaranteed to work with Warzone at 120 Hz/1080p, with HDMI 2.1 only being required for 4k. I can't find anything about 1.4, which as I said should be compatible in theory.

      @@hillman9730 i bought the G241 and am very happy about it. The ONLY downside is the stand for someone who wants the vertical position or 180 rotation. Anythingelse is pretty good.
