Phyllis Sue is my mother Dorothys baby sister and Nimrod is my Grandfather, and Molly my Grandmother! This brings back so many memories..I sure will miss them! They will forever be in our hearts!llllll Sharon
I remember the weekend nights visiting with my grandparents. Out on the front porch being rock by g.maw Molly and listening to the voices as they carried on the night air and blended in story and song. Three of our most endearing family members who hold such tremendous places in my heart and memories. They are greatly missed! grand daughter Myra
Inspired by all the touching comments of family members (see below) & the fact this clip was posted only 3 days after Phyllis' passing! This is just one of Alan Lomax's countless gifts to the world. A deft cameraman in Alan's crew starts with a tight close-up on Phyllis, later pans out to reveal (eventually) the 2 people she is singing about - - blew me away! These folks are roots music royalty: thanks. [The poignant reference to John L. Sullivan is not lost on the attentive listener either.]
She was just mesmerizing and brilliant as Clary Webb in Coal Miner's Daughter. Beautiful song. Rest in Peace, Phyllis.
The scene where she danced was so wonderful!
