    This reveal floored me. I couldn't care less for her character and the era she comes from (mainly the latter), but her model looks ASTOUNDING. Dare I say, it's possibly Bachmann's best. She looks like a fan-made model mass-produced by a real company, and I mean that in a VERY good way. She'd look really good in N scale too.

    Honestly, my biggest praise of Bachmann Rebecca is, oddly enough, the fact the coupling pretty much forced Bachmann to make her bufferbeam shorter in height. While it still has the blocky running board (which I never liked),I was more bothered by how janky her bufferbeam looked and how the buffers were too low on it.
    Thankfully the Bachmann model fixed these issues.

      You know, while I think we can all agree the buffer beam is not accurate to the show, I will say that the design on the model is more accurate to the Battle of Britain class. I'm actually starting to warm up to this design choice as I don't have a problem with the model being more accurate to its basis. My only issue that still remains though is the price, as I still don't feel it's worth the RRP that Bachmann is asking for it.

    Rebecca is a character that I’m in a mix of: I do love the way she looks, her basis (4-6-2) and yellow color livery is very awesome! Her character however (like Nia), is not really written that great and its a real shame because she was actually supposed to be introduced in Season 21 before the Big Adventures Era had started. Her model on the other hand, OH ITS SO AWESOME, BACHMANN REALLY PUT THEIR EFFORT AND IT MAKES ME WANT IT SO BAD 😃😃🤩!!! I’ll be sure to get her as possible and maybe years later fix her character if I ever make a Model Thomas Series of my own!

    From looking at this, Rebecca looks really nice and may become another contributor for best looking model. The only thing I don't like other than the price, is the size of the front buffer beam. Seeing how small it is, it looks like it could break off quite easily.

      Yeah, price is the biggest issue for me. For years I thought Spencer was ridiculous when he was $160, of course now that price has skyrocketed even further. I don't think Rebecca's model is worth the $300 price when you consider what else is out there on the market. If you want a ready to run model of Rebecca, then the option is there if you're willing to shell out the cash to own one, but I've seen and/or heard a lot of people who would rather just go out and spend far less on a Battle of Britain class and make a custom Rebecca instead.

    I've been collecting the Bachmann Thomas range for years and regardless the price on Rebecca, I'm still gonna get her. They nailed Daisy and Ryan very well (aside from a few hiccups) and was shocked that they were gonna do her (not just because of the BWBA era, but also because she's the first new large tender engine tooling since the Scottish Twins). Also I like the engine class Rebecca was based on and she would be something modellers would have fun modifying her paint scheme. Since she and Hiro use the same chassis, perhaps Bachmann might do him next as he's a popular character including Japan.

    That was a great mini thoughts on the Bachmann model of Rebecca. When I first saw the finished reveal on TrainWorld's Thomas Tuesday yesterday, my heart stopped and I was in awe of her, especially the livery and the face. I don't mind the look of the running board and bufferbeam as I'm not exactly fond of how it looks in the show (Jam Filled really aren't as detailed on a few of the newer engine characters as Arc Productions, were they?). I might get her in the future, but since I'm still collecting more Bachmann Thomas items - it'll have to wait till the right time.
    Rebecca is my favorite female character (as well as my third favorite character from the show). I agree that she does have potential had Mattel not butt in and rush her introduction episodes by pushing it forward from S21 to BWBA, and had they not make 13 each the stories on Sodor and International locations, I think a few more spotlight episodes about her could've easily expanded her character. The brake/wheelslip problem and troublesome trucks part (while I did use for my series admittedly and so do other fans) is obviously overused and there's one thing that could've defined her for another character study: the Spamcan nickname which was given to her real life counterpart (notably the unrebuilt ones), and since D199 is nicknamed Spamcan, this could've made for a great dynamic or something Rebecca felt rather upset about having not been told of the whole 'Super Rescue' event. I'm honestly surprised nobody had ever used that nickname to its advantage.

  • @exarkun42
    @exarkun42 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    Generally I agree with every point you made, but there is one discrepancy.
    Rebecca isn't based on a Merchant Navy, she is one of the Bulleid Light Pacifics (West Country/Battle of Britain class) which are a bit smaller. The tooling for Hornby's light pacifics does date back to the early 2000s, but If I remember correctly, the first versions of their Airsmoothed Merchant Navy released in either 2015 or 2016. So while the tooling is reaching the 10 year point now, I hold that those Merchant Navys are one of the best models that Hornby has ever produced.
    The Thomas range should not cost a similar price as the realistic and detailed models. I get that there is licensing involved, but charging the same for Rebecca that they charge for a Baldwin 4-6-0 with 2-3 times the amount of detail is ridiculaous.

    • @PlowBenderStudios
      @PlowBenderStudios 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Personally I think even one of Hornby's Light Pacifics from the early 2000's would still be better value for money than Bachmann Rebecca. In fact, there's a lot of people who have gone the route of just buying one of those and repainting it, and this is even after Bachmann announced their model. I can honestly say I'd spend my $300 on a 4-6-4 Hudson with DCC sound before I'd spend it on Rebecca. Also, I've said this before and I'll say it again. Bachmann's Thomas prices have gone up 200% over the last decade since Mattel took over the franchise. This is a result of them charging Bachmann more each year for a license because they're losing money due to their own recklessness. I honestly feel like Bachmann is going down the same road as Hornby did years ago, where they're charging more for the models than what they're really worth. Thomas and Percy who's toolings are 20+ years old should not cost $121, when originally they were $30 in 2002. There's no way that rise in cost is solely due to inflation over the last couple decades.

    • @PlowBenderStudios
      @PlowBenderStudios 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yeah, I honestly don't understand Bachmann's pricing sometimes, like how a model such as Salty is more expensive than a tender engine like Emily. My only guess is Bachmann may just be doing a limited run of Salty, which the shorter the production run, the higher per piece cost. Ryan is definitely one I'm not impressed with being $199 and actually costing more than a tender engine like Gordon who is only $193. I understand you have inflation and Bachmann themselves has licencing fees to pay, but the models are starting to cost more than they're really worth, which I know for a fact was a big issue that Hornby faced in their later years. A model like Thomas or Percy who were tooled 20+ years ago should not cost $199, when originally they were $30. Interesting fact for you, but Bachmann's prices have actually gone up 200% over the last decade since Mattel took over, and this can easily be rooted back to them charging more each year for licensing fees. I'd honestly like to talk about this in more detail, but I don't think the comments section is big enough.

    I wish bachmann would go back and redo their older main character molds, seeing this it makes me think they could really do a great job if they did. I assume the buffer beam looks a little funky is because of hills or inclines and also the coupler. If it was actually fully sized it'd have a big ugly hole in it, and I think that'd be even worse for tight curves. And the horrible, flimsy design used on the actual show model just being a poor idea for an actual model train. I have a lot of issues with Rebecca's actual model in the show, they changed a lot from the basis they didn't have to, but this is a great representation. Although, I never realized her eyes were that far apart...

    • @insertusername364

      Also from what I've heard, they aren't allowed to do characters that haven't appeared in CGI. I don't know how true that is but it makes some sense to me I guess, but I find that really stupid. Do you not realize how much you could milk from the fan base if you made Murdoch? That's perfectly in line for what Mattel gets up to, and to be honest the model railway hobby in general, specifically hornby. Cgi has a lot of characters but not ones I think fans would really want physical models of that cost an arm and a leg, considering most of them are kind of lacking in personality and only make up in design on occasion. And even then, the newer designs are literally just the basis of the engine with poorly applied thomas-isms attached. So they'd be horribly fragile, and not good in any way for kids. Either that, or they'll look as bizarre as engines 1-8. I can't believe they haven't gone back on those old characters too, surely they realize they're poor by today's standards. They'd have to put their Thomas model next to this new Rebecca one and think "Gosh, I think maybe our tooling is a little outdated." I mean, they are the main characters. I think I have a right to be so on top of them for this kind of thing, I can understand skipping over Spencer and Duck if you gave some of them remodels, and those later models are just fine enough to not necessarily need it. I imagine they'd update the characters with CGI faces if they did go back, but I don't think anyone would complain seeing as how ugly their old faces would be in comparison. Or, hell, do something smart and release the new models during the 80th anniversary with those model series faces. Maybe advertise it as "take a little of classic Thomas/your childhood back home with you" or something cheesy and simultaneously sweet, along those lines.

  • @DanPlotMix

    I haven't been in the Thomas fandom for a while until I came back. Mattel's work is VERY disappointing to me. Learning how new characters like Rebecca and Nia featured and the stuff they done with Thomas is too. Rebecca's potential would've fit as I too think she's a good character with a great personality, which fans animated shorts carried her better than Mattel does. I've been looking at those more than Mattel produce for years before AEG.
    My first look on Bachmann's 2023 catalog, I wasn't really excited cause I barely known these characters. Very much on Beau though. I'm up and down getting him, but it's explained why he's made due to being a easy retooling from Bachmann's Jupiter. Recent characters like Stanley is what I'm more looking forward on cause I remember him than Beau. Doug explains why characters like Stepney or any from the old model series can't be in the range, it's due to Mattel's rules that train characters from the CGI show are allow. Doug even so wants to make a Stepney, but Mattel's just awful.
    But I do wanna get Rebecca. She's eye catching as Ryan in terms of quality and runner, even if her front buffer beam design is off. Doug even said her future lies for other tender engines for example, Hiro, to be in the range if she's sold really well. And I really want Bachmann to produce Hiro that's just life completing to me, even when Rebecca's wheels are 1:1 Hiro's wheels.
    I'm quite pleased Bachmann is few of the Thomas merch continuing to be caring from the golden years. But HO:OO model trains prices gone painfully skyrocket. Rebecca's price just hurts a lot, even if it's Bachmann store. I'm hoping resellers can be generous as TrainWorld, but it's very outrageous price decision overall. Rebecca looks more $184-219 as the Battle of Britain from Hornby. I dearly hope the resellers keep it down to make it affordable.

    • @PlowBenderStudios
      @PlowBenderStudios 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Really enjoyed reading your comment and wanted to mention a few things as well. To add to the topic of Beau, originally Bachmann had only planned to do a limited run on him, but as retailers have been getting a lot of preorders for the model (even more than Rebecca), Bachmann has decided to increase the numbers for pieces produced. As for Stepney, yes, I heard the same from a few people as well, but I know fans were happy to see Stanley announced as he was another one who was in high demand.
      On another topic, I was telling someone who commented earlier that Bachmann's prices have gone up 200% over the last decade since Mattel took over Thomas. This can easily be a result of them charging Bachmann more each year for a license, which I can tell you now is just Mattel trying to recover their financial losses elsewhere. Personally I think this is why Hornby packed it up with their range, as they were paying more for a license each year and trying to pay for that expense by charging higher prices on 20+ year old models that just weren't worth it. I dare say this is also why Lionel's Thomas range has been struggling in the last 10 years as well.
      Lastly, I was also telling someone as well that if you're not in a hurry to get Rebecca, you could wait till Trainworld has one of their holiday sales where they're offering 10% off. This way you can get Rebecca for $165, which I feel is a more reasonable price. Just a thought, and I'm sure other retailers may offer these kinds of sales as well.
