Johnny's Reloading Bench considering that the adjustable barrel tuners, like that Harrell muzzle break/tuner can have a drastic effect on group size with just moving 1-2oz of weight a small distance forward or backward on the barrel, I wouldn't be surprised that just the brake/suppressor adapter would make a drastic difference in group size. Was a great test though for sure. I've already ordered one of the Lyman funnel sets to try them out. Way cheaper option than the Sinclair units I was going to stock up on lol..
I made it through the first 100 rounds today. Creedmoor is not exactly a big recoiling round, but 50 rounds with no suppressor or brake starts to wear on you! I'm hoping to start testing the actual muzzle devices tomorrow.
350 Creedmoor + 50 Grendel + 50 .223 Rem = HOURS AND HOURS AND HOURS of trickling powder charges. Every single one of them is weighed down to the single granule of powder. It was exhausting! I wanted the best ammo I could make for this testing, though...so hopefully it will pay off.
Johnny's Reloading Bench and this is exactly why your channel is so valuable to this community. Thank you for all your hard work, we truly appreciate it.
VV makes good powder. I made 5.45 x 39 with N130 and it not only matched 7n6 velocities but it averaged 50 to 75 fps more. I made a 75 grain Ballistic tip round with 19 grains N130, OAL 2.230, and it averaged 2525 FPS.
Awesome, a double feature! Can’t wait to watch the Grendel video next. Did I see a box of .257 Roberts dies in that stack of dies? I would love to see a series on the .257 Roberts. I think it overdue for a resurgence. A great cartridge that is good for deer and varmints with light recoil.
Yup, I have an old sporterized Arisaka chambered in .257 Roberts. One of the pieces in the bolt is cracked and I haven't been able to shoot it in a while. I need to see if I can track down a replacement part. Is anyone making guns chambered in .257 Roberts right now? I wouldn't mind picking one up. I killed a couple deer with the Arisaka when I was a kid so I'm a fan of the cartridge.
Johnny's Reloading Bench It looks like Kimber and Ruger still list .257 Roberts on their websites. Although I couldn’t find any in stock on BudsGunShop.com.
My old chrony f1 always freaks out when using led lighting... just a thought... Don't ya just love the giant fireball seen, magnified by scope settings, with no muzzle device. I always find it very distracting. great vid, can't wait for the horrormonics testing.
I didn't get the impression that he sells them. He didn't mention it at all. Seemed like something he just made for himself and decided to make me one too. If he's selling them, hopefully he'll stop by and let us know.
Johnny's Reloading Bench ...boy oh boy do I know. Anneal, clean, resize, trim, uniform primer pockets, uniform and debur flash holes, trim, chamfer and debur, clean again, hand prime, calibrate and measure each charge to .1 grains (Don't forget to check throws with separate scale), and seat bullets. Yeah but when it's right....😀
Hi thanks for your great videos! Having a 222rem with a 1/9 twist barrel i would be curious to see what velocities you can achieve with vihta powder and 55-60gr bullets. Could you try something? Thanks a lot
Looks like maybe I should add a YHM "Thread protector" to my midway list. I never ordered one because they look heavy. Figured there mount was heavy enough.
Building a 10.5 inch ar pistol for alternate season. Your butt kicking series is helping me a a ton! General reloading question: can I reload without a chronograph if I'm staying under published max charges? I wouldn't start at the max charge or course work my way up looking for presure signs. Any other tips to reloading without a chrono?
Read your brass for pressure signs and you'll be OK. A chronograph is a tool for checking the consistency of cartridges, round to round. Good stuff to know, but not essential to reloading. The industry loves to sell us stuff we don't absolutely need. You're definitely on the right track. Start at the minimum powder charge and never exceed the maximum, tenth of a grain at a time. Start over when you change a component. There's my nickels worth.
I think you should draw your intersecting lines for your point of aim, and then put your orange dots 3moa down and 2moa right, and almost every video you will have several shots hit them. That way it's not a wasted dot! 😜
lol great idea. I know you're joking, but I usually zero my gun off the dot so I can keep a consistent aiming point with a fresh dot. It's not a big deal with 22 caliber, but with 30 cal a 5 shot group can tear up a dot pretty well. It's also much easier for you all to see the bullet holes on video when they're on the white paper.
This is a truly strange realization. In shooting custom 75 gr everglades FMJ HP. I have a 24 in barrel with a 1-7 twist. I have tested R-15, TAC, VHT N140, N540. My best groups all have been with 24.0-24.2 gr. I was very surprised to discover this. Watching this and other videos show very similar results even with varying barrel lengths. Just throwing this out there.
I've got an off the shelf 10.5 inch barrel that has gained about 4moa of precision loss over the last 500 rounds. Total rounds through the barrel is about 1200. The bcg scope and shooter have all been eliminated from the equation as my son is shooting a second barrel from the same lot and we have swapped all other components during testing over the last few days. Both guns are exact twins. His barrel is about 2moa mine is 4-6 moa. We both clean our barrels with bronze brush and frog lube with patch wipe-down after each outing. Our rounds have mostly been 50gr zmax using AA5744 at 2600fps we always split the same batch of loads. Really perplexing situation. I never imagined such a quick drop in precision. My groups are nice and round and evenly spaced yet very spread out. Any thoughts? I'm totally shocked.
a lot of fire from the muzzle = wasted energy/powder. i understand that picking most accurate powder that can push bullet with highest velocity is in most cases will result in lots of un-burned powder granules on exit. removing suppressor just made it so much more obvious. it literally hurts to see expensive powder literally going to waste burning outside the barrel and not pushing the bullet. I wonder if there are powders that can burn almost completely by the time bullet reaches the muzzle. i should say that i know that there are powders like that. perhaps ones catered to SBRs and pistols, but i mean what are those powders and how do they perform. I think, Johnny, this could be potentially an interesting topic to dive into and explore.
Hey Johnny, try coating/tumbling your jacketed bullets with Hex Boron Nitride fine grade power. I believe you'll find your Std Devs. nearly cut in half. $16.95 on EBAY for an ounce.
I was watching iragveteran888 on one of his videos. When you are doing your testing and having a stray bullet jump, could that be a cause of a bullet being a little lighter than the others. So if you weighed each bullet from heaviest to lightest and used the ones that were closest in weight, wicks would that give you a better grouping. Keep up the awesome job!
Theory on relatively poor accuracy without muzzle device: The crown of the muzzle on my 10.5" 5.56 pistol is completely flat. Not conduscive to any sort of accuracy. Maybe check your muzzle crown?
I think there's something to this. These barrels are meant to have some sort of muzzle device attached to them. Whereas say a bolt action hunting rifle for example traditionally does not (and therefore is crowned accordingly).
Further thought, I wonder if this affects flat base bullets to the same degree as boat tails? I'd have to go back and re-watch the previous videos again to see, but it would be interesting.
The crown is the crown. If it was messed up, the problem would be seen with or without the suppressor. Keep in mind this is a 30 caliber suppressor, so there's a ton of clearance. Plus, this same loss of accuracy is seen on pretty much every gun I own. The next video should clarify things.
Seems like he packed up shop when the new youtube guidelines came out. I don't blame him. He pokes his head out every once in a while. He commented on one of my videos just the other day. I sure do miss his videos!
It's a Saturday night double feature, folks! Don't miss the 6.5 Grendel video I posted here: th-cam.com/video/OGj7J6Dnw2w/w-d-xo.html
Thankyou! You just made a dull Saturday night enjoyable.

That is a crap ton of ammo ready to shoot. Can't wait for the harmonics testing.

Check out all that ammo! So stoked about the barrel harmonics video!

Berger manual has always been stupid conservative with powder charges. Keep up the great work!
Is it Christmas? Feels like it with 2 new videos in one day!
So now we need a test of the flash hider / suppressor / and nothing all in the same charge weight. cool video keep up the good work.

Oh man 25-06 would be so much cooler in my opinion. I wish the .257s would come back from the dead.
Johnny thanks for all your good work.

That was dramatic. Great info Johnny
Dude, I chuckle every time you say: didn’t blow our face off. You should trademark that. LOL
Ready to buy the funnel and adapter/s ( .223, .260 Rem, and .308 please). Good opportunity to try "the lump";
I didn't get the impression that he sells them. He didn't mention it at all. Seemed like something he just made for himself and decided to make me one too.
If he's selling them, hopefully he'll stop by and let us know.
CCI #41 is the best primers for 223/5.56!👌👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Quickload (w/ LC Brass h20 capacity, 2.26 seating depth) shows 24.5g N540 as 49,995 PSI. PLENTY of room to go. Maybe another grain.
Aaron Anderson i don't have quickload but i ran those numbers by my grandpa, that's about what he said.
350 rounds of Creedmoor....been busy much? Nice work...
All of them are meticulously hand trickled charges as well. It took FOREVER to load them.
Johnny's Reloading Bench ...boy oh boy do I know. Come up to WV and you can use my autotrickler that’s been sitting neglected in my basement

It is because of case content depending on the brand of brass why the loads published are so different
I have the Lyman funnel set, does not work well for .223.
Works well for some other calibers though.
Why didn't you use your Magnetospeed?
I think you should draw your intersecting lines for your point of aim, and then put your orange dots 3moa down and 2moa right, and almost every video you will have several shots hit them. That way it's not a wasted dot! 😜

Johnny's Reloading Bench but wit current shift you only need 1 dot per charge weight. Lol

Also A 2520 powder with the same 24.0 gr. with only a .2 varying charge weight.

What did you say the twist of the barrel. I know you have said. But I can’t remember. Thanks. Good video
Still waiting on answer.... lol

Hey Johnny-can the can add fps ? Is that something to consider when trying to get bullet speed up?
Did you have carbon fouling on the crown?
Are you using small base dies?
I have the lyman funnel kit . It sucks its too heavy just spend the money and get the area 419 funnel kit it's the tits
Interesting. How many shots you think you have on that barrel now?
I had it counted up a while back. It should be well over 2,000 at this point. I will have to see if I can find my notes.

I know this is off topic but have you heard from elvis ammo lately? he seems to be missing.
Seems like he packed up shop when the new youtube guidelines came out. I don't blame him. He pokes his head out every once in a while. He commented on one of my videos just the other day. I sure do miss his videos!
yeah I miss him to, sure wanted to see what his new bullets did.
thanks for the reply. by the by sure like your vids, have learned a lot.
have you tested the elvis 61 gr cast bullet? or the 77 grain one.
It's kind of obvious you should leave that suppressor on all the time.
I recently switched to Saturn powder funnels specific for each caliber and have to say i am pleased. Check them out
Try to shoot on a softer surface and see if It makes any difference. I bet it will
I've got an old pillow top mattress I'll drag out there and shoot prone from in the next video.
LMAO
Is 540 bulkier than 140?
No, I don't think so. I'm working from memory, but I think the 140 granules are much larger, which means more bulk for a given charge weight.
I kind of remember that too. I've ended up w/ Varget and CCI 450's for all of my 223 / 308 loads. Kind of fool proof for me.
Yikes.. imagine if you had to buy that much 6.5 Creedmoor ammo today. Probably $600.00 or more
