Pull, do not push. Do not go 'back and forth', just slow, steady, forward movement. Adjust your forward speed, to control the amount of ballast applied. After a bit of practice, you just apply the ballast, and glue it !
I haven't noticed a difference with direction. I only have code 55 track so I do not know if it would be any better on standard code 80. Still better than spooning or spreading with a cup I think.

Yes it is a handy tool that does take getting a feel for how it is going to dispense the goods.
