Imagine inventing and building a reel-to-reel deck from scratch. The amount of engineering and sheer genius that went into a unit like that is totally mind-blowing. :)

All to save a few pounds. The three-motor mechs have been around since the 1940s - no cams, no idlers, as simple as it gets. But apparently, two reel motors cost much more than all this cam-and-spring complexity.

The fun part comes with learning the electronics, something to get your head around and understand in more detail, and learn what electrical parts to replace.

The yellow coil is the track change solenoid, and it has a separate motor for the 8-track. You need to remove the chassis from the wood cabinet and do a thorough cleaning!, also check the tape heads on both the reel to reel and the 8-track

If accessible use a cut-off wheel on a Dremel tool to cut a flat screwdriver blade in the screw's head. Then use a regular screw driver to remove the screw.

This was awesome! I am obsessed with finding a reel-to-reel and have yet to find a working one. This may be a stupid question, but isn't there ANY company that still produces a consumer model? I know there are super high-end ones, but heck, Wal-Mart still carries one model of the old-school cassette recorder with a handle that we all had as kids. Somebody somewhere must make a basic one. Keep up the good work!

Use AT-205 rubber renewal liquid on the rubber rollers and any other rubber parts on the tape deck, including the 8-track deck as well

My friend was making replacement cams for these a few years ago. They are proper metal rather than the plastic ones I've seen on eBay. I've had them installed in my Roberts 800X [Akai M-9] for over 10 years and never a problem. It doesn't matter how the original cams look. At this late stage they are a problem waiting to happen and must be replaced.

One thing that sounds counterintuitive about pot metal versus higher quality steel is that the higher quality steel is usually shinier, which tends to pick up the dust, dirt, grime, grease, oil, and other contaminates much easier than the non-shiny pot metal. And pot metal also hides scratches better as well.

My guess is ,that yellow coil is a solenoid.

Great look inside. When plugging in a rtr, the capstan on the flywheel is always turning, on some machines. I was wondering if this machine is always turning off plugged in.

I think that you can fix the pot metal cams/arms with j b weld, just have to let it set up overnight, should work fine !
