I think this song is an anti capitalist anthem..Yes, in this system those are the choices given to us, but there ARE other things to do, like farming, crafting, providing care or a.service , creating, art etc - and he's saying that we need to stop accepting the status quo as if it's a.foregone conclusion that there are no other options. If you'll notice, he is neither a salesman nor a soldier.himself. Oh and butcher is another reference to soldier and pauper is an Irish/slightly antiquated term for a poor person. Hozier has incredible music. I honestly don't think there's a bad one among his releases. He has some deep lyrics and uses a lot of literary and mythology references that go over my head. Take me to church is only the surface. If anybody wrote a song for me the way he does I’d die. He is a lyrical genius
