I listened to this podcast from Japan yesterday and came here to just comment. 😬 I can confirm everything cowtuk mentioned.
Tuitions were the WORST part of my student life. I simply couldn’t believe how much money my hard working middle class parents were willing to pay to make sure I’m in the rat race and being forced to go to these classes despite my begging them not to send me just made me really bitter towards Maths primarily. Like, the physics and bio teachers were good so I enjoyed that but Maths ka ek toh class subah 5:30 baje rakh ke aap bachhon ki zindagi barbaad kyun kar rahe ho??!? What’s worse than forcing Math down a kid’s throat? Forcing it down at 5:30 in the morning. Saala pehle 10th ka tuition. Then 12th ke liye 11th se shuru karo. Then CET ka alag se tuition. Abbey ek hi toh jaan hai meri! Kitni baar logey??! The BEST part is, literally NONE OF THAT MATTERED, because I’m now working on my PhD dissertation at an R-1 university without having paid a dime of my own money, and am a recognized expert in my fields. No thanks to those awful tuitions.

My parents used to think Tuition is a daycare just so they do be their own after work and anything I learn was a bonus. So I've been in tuitions since 5th till 12th.

No shame in admitting but I too have experienced the Mariko Aoki phenomenon all my life. To clear Varun's confusion this ain't just a Japanese thing, I was born and brought up in UAE & I thought I too was the only one feeling it. I've read someone else mention in the comments that they too feel it except they doze off when they read a book, that's another thing common with me....can't get past a page. P.S Neville looks TOO CUTE

Just like with Bawa, I did not know about tuitions and coaching classes coz I was in a boarding school. When I entered 11th, all my classmates would talk about how much better their coaching classes education is. At some point, I started asking about getting into those classes myself. I was surprised to learn that my college professors owned a lot of the coaching classes in the area and they spent more time teaching in their classes lol.
My mom takes tuitions at home so i can atleast comfirm that home tutions are still alive 😆

Bawa is right.. when I first went to Monterey beach/pacific ocean in California, the cold ocean concept hit me for the first time. You know it in your head that your Indian oceans are warm but that ocean is going to be cold, but feeling "cold ocean" for the first time was mesmerising experience.

I feel that we’re taught as children (especially the relatively privileged of us) were conditioned to hate on Public Schools without realising they’re severely neglected and underfunded.
I went to a 'private' convent school and both my parents attended Marathi medium government schools (all 3 schools in the same town) and they had teachers that were actually B.Ed as opposed to my school who employed just about anyone. Case in Point, my classmate who is a professional athlete was my brother's math teacher when he was in 9th. She consistently failed in Math at school (not shaming, coz athletics was always her thing), but I realize this was just an exception, some of the stories we read, abut mid-day meals, lack of facilities, caste discrimination are horrifying. Especially with Pandemic the situation just went from bad to worse.

For the Tuitions topic, I was in Home Tuitions, where the Teacher used to come to MY home to teach ME, right from 1st Standard.
I had a drawing teacher like that. Still got only a B in the Elementary/Intermediate exams.
